3 Detailed Feature Descriptions
Benefits
Multi-segment pseudowire increases network scalability because it reduces the number of the
Resource Reservation Protocol – Traffic Engineering (RSVP-TE) tunnels seen in the core. For
single-segment pseudowires there is at least one Packet-Switched Network (PSN) tunnel between
the pseudowire endpoints. In the multi-segment pseudowire the PSN tunnels can be merged into
one tunnel on the common uplink. Other benefits of multi-segment pseudowires are listed in the
following:
• Avoid multi-area Label-Switched Paths (LSPs) by switching pseudowire circuits at the area bor-
der and therefore Constraint Shortest Path First (CSPF) can always be used for path calculation.
• Combine different PSN technologies, e.g. Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) over Internet
Protocol (IP) tunnels in Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) access, MPLS over Ethernet in the fiber
network or Label Distribution Protocol (LDP) and RSVP-TE for different network segments.
Description
Multi-segment pseudowires are supported for the Tellabs 8600 (FP2.11/FP1.3 or later) and Tellabs
8800 network elements (for the Tellabs 8800 network elements, only LDP-based variant is
supported).

3 Detailed Feature Descriptions
Benefits
This feature allows the operator to provision Ethernet VLAN VPNs graphically in the VPN
Provisioning tool.
Description
Support is included in the VPN Provisioning tool for provisioning VLAN VPNs graphically. The
first network element family that is supported for the new VLAN VPN provisioning functionality is
the Tellabs ® 7100 optical transport system network element family.
15
3 Detailed Feature Descriptions
Benefits
This feature allows the operator to quickly find out why the pseudowire is down.
Description
The new Troubleshooter tool offers assistance in finding network configuration problems related
to pseudowires. It can be opened for all pseudowires in a pseudowire mesh or for one single
pseudowire. The tool shows a list of checks that can be executed for the selected pseudowire
together with the assumed effect of a possible failure and the solution proposal. The user can choose
to execute all checks or select the relevant items to be checked.
After executing the checks the user can see the result (pass or fail) for each check item and take
the necessary actions to correct the situation.

Benefits
Autotunnel and policer parameters have been separated to provide the user with the ability to specify
separate settings (such as capacity settings) for the tunnels and policers.
Description
The autotunnel feature of VPN Provisioning has been enhanced by adding support for the separately
defining service policer and autotunnel settings. Previously, the policer and autotunnel settings were
combined, so that it was not possible to e.g. define different capacities for the policer and the
auto-generated tunnel. Now the settings have been separated, as can be seen below:
17
3 Detailed Feature Descriptions
18
3 Detailed Feature Descriptions
• General Parameters/Fixed Service Class for VC - The service class is now selected separately
instead of inheriting it from the policer settings.
• General Parameters/Policing - The Policing settings now only apply to policers and not to au-
totunnels (unless so selected in the Tunnel Auto-Generation settings).
• Tunnel Auto-Generation/CIR - New settings for defining the capacity of the auto-generated
tunnels. Capacities can be defined separately for the different directions and for the working and
protecting paths.
• Tunnel Auto-Generation/Copy from Policer - By ticking this check box, the autotunnel capac-
ities will be copied from the policer settings (as in previous releases).
Note that the changes only apply to pseudowires. For IP VPNs, the settings are unchanged.
Benefits
Fast Reroute (FRR) enables fast protection (in the order of tens of milliseconds) of LSPs.
Description
Fast Reroute enables fast protection of LSPs. Speed is achieved by detecting the failure locally from
the link even in LSP mid-points and precalculating the protecting LSPs. A protected LSP will have
a protecting LSP starting from each Label Switch Router (LSR) on the path.
FRR functionality is implemented with the FAST_REROUTE and DETOUR objects which are
extensions of RSVP-TE signalling protocol. RSVP-TE establishes backup LSPs for the local repair
of tunnels. The speed is achieved by computing the path in advance and redirecting traffic as close to
the failure point as possible. Therefore, when a failure occurs, there is no additional delay because
of path calculation and signalling.
The FRR feature described here is applicable only to LSPs which are explicitly routed with
RSVP-TE.
Fast reroute has two mechanisms to protect an LSP: one-to-one backup and facility backup. Both
methods can be used for protecting links and nodes in a network failure situation. In the one-to-one
backup method, a label-switched path is established that intersects the original LSP downstream of
the point of link or node failure. A separate backup LSP is established for each LSR that is backed
up. The principle is presented in the figure below. To protect an LSP that traverses N nodes, there
could be as many as (N - 1) detours. To minimize the number of LSPs in the network, the backup
LSPs will be merged to the protected LSP, when the backup LSP intersects again the protected LSP
and uses the same outgoing interface.
19
3 Detailed Feature Descriptions
The facility backup method takes advantage of the MPLS label stack. Instead of creating a separate
LSP for every backed-up LSP, a single LSP is created that serves to back up a set of LSPs.
The protecting tunnel can protect all the LSPs that pass the protected LSR and have a common
intersection LSR somewhere downstream of the protected LSR.
20
3 Detailed Feature Descriptions
In R17A the creation of bypass tunnels for facility backup mechanism for the Tellabs 8600
system is not supported.
In Tunnel Engineering, Fast Reroute protection can be defined separately for the RSVP-TE tunnel.
There are also more settings for e.g. controlling the routing of the backup paths.
Moreover, FRR is also supported for autogenerated RSVP-TE tunnels in VPN Provisioning.

3 Detailed Feature Descriptions
Description
The ATM dropped packet statistics feature measures the number of packets dropped for a specific
ATM pseudowire. The measuring is based on the sequence number. The dropped packets are
reported together with the rest of the ATM pseudowire statistics. ATM dropped packet statistics
are supported in Tellabs 8660 edge switch, Tellabs 8630 access switch and Tellabs 8620 access
switch FP2.11 and Tellabs 8605 access switch FP1.3 or subsequent releases. Granularities of both
15-minute and 24-hour statistics are reported. The network element supports 1 x 24-hour and
32 x 15-minute history periods that are collected into database using Broadband Management
Protocol (BMP). History reporting is supported in the Performance Management Overview and
Performance Management graph windows that also support real-time counters. Supported counters
are listed in the following:
8600 Node Manager shows current values in addition to recent history periods retrieved from the
network element. Web Reporter can also be used for reporting performance history data from
database.
3.2.2 F01681 - VCCV LSP Ping and Traceroute for Multi-segment Pseudowires
Benefits
This feature allows the operator to measure connectivity on multi-segment pseudowires and
troubleshoot connectivity problems.
Description
Virtual Circuit Connectivity Verification (VCCV) LSP Ping is supported also for the new
multi-segment pseudowire type (previously support for single-segment pseudowires). For
multi-segment PWs, VCCV LSP Ping is operated in the same way as for the single-segment PWs.
VCCV LSP Ping is used for testing the end-to-end connectivity of a pseudowire.
VCCV LSP Traceroute test is supported as a new test type for the new multi-segment pseudowire
type. The multi-segment PW traceroute test is used to verify the path of a multi-segment
pseudowire, and to diagnose and locate problems related to the individual segments and switching
points of the pseudowire.
In R17A, VCCV LSP traceroute is only supported for pseudowires signalled with LDP.

3.2.3 F01809 - QoS Test Workflow Enhancement for Tellabs 8600 Network
Elements
Benefits
This feature simplifies the workflow to enable the QoS testing feature in the Tellabs 8600 network
elements.
Description
The workflow for preparing for Packet Loop Test QoS based tests (throughput, delay and packet loss
tests) has been simplified in Tellabs 8660 edge switch, Tellabs 8630 access switch and Tellabs 8620
access switch FP2.11, Tellabs 8605 access switch FP1.3 and Tellabs 8607 access switch FP1.0A. It
is no more required to create static routes from the QoS address to a Null interface due to the node
CPU protection. Instead, creation of Packet Loop Test echo server automatically sets up four ACLs
to protect a node CPU from the possible test packet flood (in case of misconfiguration).
Recommendations of protecting node CPU when using QoS-based tests in the Packet Loop Test
application in nodes older than Tellabs 8660 edge switch, Tellabs 8630 access switch and Tellabs
8620 access switch FP2.11, Tellabs 8605 access switch FP1.3 and Tellabs 8607 access switch
FP1.0A is listed in the following:
23
3 Detailed Feature Descriptions
3. Static Routes are redistributed in the protocols (e.g. OSPF) for the node.
4. The Qos Test Address has been enabled for the node in those IP VPNs having an end interface
in the node.
When the node has Tellabs 8660 edge switch, Tellabs 8630 access switch and Tellabs 8620 access
switch FP2.11, Tellabs 8605 access switch FP1.3 and Tellabs 8607 access switch FP1.0A or newer
software, the following procedure can be followed:
1. Create the Test Loopback Address in the node if it has not been done earlier using Network
Editor.
2. Create the Qos Test Address in the node using the same value as for the Test Loopback Address
with Node Manager.
3. The Test Loopback Interface has been enabled for the node in those IP VPNs having an end
interface in the node.
Note! When changing the Qos Test Address to the same as the test Loopback Address after updating
the ESW to a version which supports ACL based CPU protection for Qos based Packet Loop Test,
those IP VPNs having endpoint interfaces in the node should be disconnected and reconnected.
The disconnect/reconnect operations are not needed if the Qos Test Address has not previously been
enabled for the IP VPN and the Test Loopback Address has been already enabled for the IP VPN
nodes and the values have not been changed.

Benefits
Fully managed and cost-efficient 1-, 2-, 4-pair copper access with max. 5.7 Mbps line rate and up to
12 Mbps user connections.
Description
A new OMH2 unit and new SHDSL NTUs are introduced for cost-efficient SHDSL access. The
OMH2-8 and OMH2-16 interface units use ITU-T G.SHDSL-based technology. OMH2-8 has eight
interfaces, each of which can support symmetrical data rates up to 5712 kbps. OMH2-16 is the
same for 16 SHDSL lines. 1-, 2- and 4-pair modes are supported. The OMH2 unit is designed for
connecting the Tellabs 8110 CTE2-S and Tellabs 8110 CTE2-R G.SHDSL network terminating
units (NTUs).
The following SHDSL2 NTUs are introduced: Tellabs 8110 CTE2-S V.35, Tellabs 8110 CTE2-S

Benefits
This feature allows the operator to use a centralized RADIUS user authentication server.
Description
The support for RADIUS allows the operator to have a centralized authentication server which is
used for authenticating the users. Previously, LDAP has already been supported for centralized
authentication, but in those cases where LDAP is not used as the authentication protocol, RADIUS
is commonly used. The RADIUS support also enables the operator to use a single centralized user
authentication server for both Tellabs 8000 manager as well as for the Tellabs 8600 system network
elements, as the Tellabs 8600 system network elements already include support for RADIUS
authentication.
3.9.2 F01936 - Centralized Driver Handling for Tellabs 8600 and Tellabs 8800
Network Elements
Benefits
This feature allows the operator to centralize the driver management for Tellabs 8600 and Tellabs
8800 network elements.
Description
EMS Service, VPN Provisioning Service, Macro Manager Service and Packet Loop Test Service
require information about the Tellabs 8600 and Tellabs 8800 network element drivers to be activated.
Prior to R17A the driver activation was done during the Tellabs 8000 manager installation on a
particular Management Server or by configuring NMS.INI file in that server. In R17A centralized,
database-based driver activation has been introduced. Now activation is performed once and takes
place during the database update for Tellabs 8000 network manager.
It is possible to view the currently existing driver information in the database through Network
Editor. The following data can be obtained:

3 Detailed Feature Descriptions
It is possible to override the driver activation entries in the database by manually activating and
configuring the EMSSERVER_DRIVERS entry in the NMS.INI file.
Benefits
This feature allows the operator to integrate the Tellabs 8000 manager to higher-level OSS systems
using a Telemanagement Forum standards-based northbound interface.
