Lesson 1

Learning Activity sheet (LAS)

WEEK 1
Subject: Earth and life science

NAME OF LEARNER: _____________________________________________

GRADE/SECTION: _____________________________________________
TITLE: THE PLANET EARTH
MELC: Recognize the uniqueness of Earth, being the only planet in the solar system with
properties necessary to support life
OBJECTIVES: At the end of Lesson 1, learners are expected to:
 describe the characteristics of Earth that are necessary to support life
 explain how these characteristics sustain the needs of living organisms

Background information:

Guide Questions
1. What are the characteristics of the Earth that enable it to supports life?
2. How these characteristics sustain the needs of living organisms?
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE EARTH THAT SUPPORTS LIFE
 There are 2 Categories of the planets;1. Terrestrial planets-Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars;2. Jovian Planets
-Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune

Figure 1: The solar system

 Our home planet is rocky and its surface has mountains, valleys, canyons, plains. That’s why it is called a
terrestrial planet.

Terrestrial Planets Jovian Planets

composed of mostly rock or metal (Mercury, Venus, Are the huge, gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus,
Earth, Mars) Neptune)
solid surfaces have no surfaces
located in the inner solar system located in the outer solar system

Earth’s atmosphere is 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and

1% other ingredients. Most of life on earth needs
oxygen for life. The atmosphere shields us from harmful
radiation coming from the Sun.

1
 It has a molted
nickel-iron outer
core which give
rise to an
extensive
magnetic field.

 Earth is the only planet that sustain life because it is located in the habitable
zone. Factors that makes a planet habitable are temperature, atmosphere, energy, and nutrients.
Earth’s surface is in the temperature, -15 0 C to 1150C, where life thrives and liquid water exists.
Earth has gravity to hold sufficient atmosphere. There’s a steady input of light and chemical
energy where cell’s function in the earth. Solid planets have nutrients in them with water cycle
and geologic activities that can transport and replenish chemicals needed by organisms.

Summary:

1. It has the right distance from the sun.

2. It is protected from harmful solar radiation by its magnetic field.
3. It is kept warm by an insulating atmosphere.
4. It has the right amount of ingredients for life, including water and carbon.

Performance task:

List down ten (10) activities that you can do to save planet Earth and identify those activities as a form of
recycling, reducing, or reusing.
