3rd Day Triduum in Honor of Saint Augustine
Opening Prayer
O Lord my God, hear my prayer, may your mercy hearken to my longing, a longing on fire not for myself
alone but to serve the Church I dearly love; You see my heart and know this is true. Let me offer in
sacrifice to You the service of my heart and tongue, but grant me first what I can offer You; for I am
needy and poor, but You are rich unto all who call upon You, and You care for us though no care
troubles You. (Confession Bk. XI p. 285). Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Reading:
And during supper Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had
come from God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he
poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciple’s feet and wipe them with the towel that was
tied around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, Lord, are you going to wash my feet? Jesus
answered, you do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand.
Peter said to him, You will never wash my feet, Jesus answered, unless I wash you, you have no share
with me. After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and returned to the table, he said to them,
do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord – and you are right, for that is what
I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.
• St. Augustine, filled with zeal for God’s glory…Pray for us.
• St. Augustine, holiest of the wise and wisest of the holy…Pray for us.
God, the desire of every human heart, You moved St. Augustine to seek restlessly for truth and peace.
Touch our hearts with his burning desire for wisdom, for the Word-made flesh.
God of truth and justice, You taught Augustine to love unity and common life. Give us a share in his
thirst for unity and make us one in mind and heart.
God, our shepherd, You made Augustine a faithful pastor of Your flock. Guide us, like him to serve all
people, as we make our way to Your kingdom.
God, in whom we find our rest, renew in us the desire to follow Jesus and His servant Augustine. Listen
to our prayers especially this one (mention your intentions). Keep us faithful to our promises until at last
we find our rest in You. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as
it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who
trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Hail Mary
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you, blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of
your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
Glory Be
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever
shall be, world without end. Amen.
Closing Prayer
God of compassion, You showed us how love looks like. It has the hands to help others, has the feet to
hasten to the poor and needy, has the eyes to see the misery, has the ear to hear the sighs and sorrows
of them. (St. Augustine)
Grant that we may be the hands, the feet and the heart of Jesus in service to Your Church and teach us
to love tenderly, act justly, and walk humbly with our God. Through our Lord Jesus Christ Your Son, who
lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God forever and ever. Amen.
