I. Warm-up 2 minutes

Look at the pictures below. There are different buildings across the world.
Match these pictures to the words below.

I. Warm-up 3 minutes

Look at the four sentences below. Can you arrange these four buildings in
chronological (按时间先后) order in complete sentences?

a. This unusual Piano and Violin shaped building was built in 2007.
b. The Burj Khalifa has been the tallest structure in the world since its topping out (竣工) in late 2008.
c. Tokyo Tower is a communication and observation tower completed in 1958. 4

d. The Community Bookshelf is a striking (引人注目的) feature of Kansas City's downtown. It was
completed between March and the fall of 2004.

Sentences:

Of all the four buildings, Tokyo Tower was built first, and then … was
built. Afterwards, … was built, and finally, … was built.

II. Temporal Conjunctions 3 minutes

In IELTS listening test, you may hear some temporal conjunctions


(时间型连接词). Temporal conjunctions tell us when the thing will happen,
and which of the two happened first. Below is a list of commonly used
temporal conjunctions.

Read these words twice to familiarize yourself with them.

before; later, afterwards 之前; 之后

now, recently, currently 现在,最近

finally, in the end, at the end of 最后

II. Temporal Conjunctions 3 minutes

Below are several sentence examples, read them twice so that you
can know how to apply temporal conjunctions in real sentences.

e.g. 1. At first, I thought he was joking but then I realized he meant it.
2. First, fry the garlic. Next, add the ginger. So what happened then? 6
3. Before Jill could reach the door, Kim quickly closed it.
4. Recently, I've been feeling a bit depressed.
5. Of course I'll listen to what she has to say but at the end of the day, it's my decision.

Usually, temporal conjunctions can be used to locate the correct


answer in IELTS Listening test. Sometimes, the correct answer is said
just after the temporal conjunction “then”.
Sample question:

Last week, we looked at some of the features of modern houses, and today we’re going
to turn the clock back and look at traditional house design. I’ve chosen to start with 9
Samoa.
Um, so let’s have a look at, first of all, at the overall design of a traditional Samoan house.
Traditional designs were (B) round or sometimes they were (A) oval in shape. Now, these
days, houses in Samoa have become more modern and are usually (C) rectangular. Here’s
a picture. correct answer

All three options were mentioned in scripts, but the correct answer is just after the
temporal conjunction words “now” and “these days”.

As you can see, there are no walls, so the air circulates (循环) freely around the house – Samoa
is a place that experiences high temperatures … but the open design of the house also reflects
the openness of Samoan society. The foundations of the house – that’s the part beneath the 11
floor – are raised slightly. Um, in the past, the height was linked to the importance of the

occupants, which we’ll talk about another time.
Question 2 Now, let’s have a close look at the roof. This, as you can see in the picture, is dome-shaped (穹
顶) and traditionally thatched (用茅草覆盖), or covered with leaves from the sugar cane (甘蔗) –
that’s an established crop in Samoa. This was a job for the women, and it involved twisting (缠
绕) the leaves and then fastening (系紧) them with a thin strip (条) of coconut leaf before fixing
them to the roof in several layers.
