Topic: High-school students are expected to participate more in extracurricular activities and

community service in addition to achieving high grades. Some educators suggest extending high-
school education to four years so that students can achieve all that is expected of them. Others
are against the proposal because they think students would lose interest in school and attendance
would drop in the end.
In about 350 words, write an essay that ends with the remark “High-school education should be
extended to four years” to assert your point of view on this question. Use reasons and examples
to support your position.

Essay:
Nowadays, students are required to obtain enviable grades coupled with participating
more in extracurricular activities. Consequently, the expansion of high-school education to four
years is taken cognizance of. I am personally a proponent of this standpoint owing to some
reasons.
Firstly, the prolongation of high-school education process establishes a firmer underpinning for
more favorable tertiary education. As one supplementary year of schooling materializes,
students’ academic pressure would be exceedingly relieved. The curriculum would be
systematized anew to be apposite for the four-year education, which entails less knowledge in a
semester. Thus, they would be more employed in each subject to attain more commendable
learning outcomes and partaking in extracurricular activities to hone their soft skills. Thereby,
students’ competence would be more sufficiently acquired to facilitate university and later life.
Secondly, that high-school education is lengthened would resolve such predicaments as
perplexity about accordingly selecting majors and unpreparedness for university life. Thanks to
an increased amount of time to engage in social activities, students would have their aspirations
and dormant talents being detected. Hence, they would discern their true self whereby they can
overcome the hurdle of choosing majors and career paths. Concurrently, they would also be more
matured and develop better adaptability to accustom themselves to self-reliant life at universities.
Thirdly, undergoing one additional high school year affords students with more allotted time to
revel in memorable experiences with friends. Generally speaking, high school friendships are the
most valuable ones compared to those cultivated at other stages in life. Indeed, they are not
childish like those formed at lower-level schools, and also unencumbered by the busyness of
adult life. However, grappling to be conversant with a high-school education and ameliorate
academic pressures are time-consuming insofar as most students cannot thoroughly enjoy their
friendships. As a result, four-year high school education is preponderant for students to strike a
balance between learning and fostering constructive relationships.
Much as there remain opponents maintaining that it would undermine students’ enthusiasm, I
believe that length should not be held culpable for tedium. In other words, it is the shortage of
allure and arduous learning process that engenders deficiency in students’ interest. Therefore,
four-year education with less academic pressures and more compelling extracurricular activities
would effectively tackle this problem.
In conclusion, after elaborating on the aforementioned justifications, I firmly advocate the
realization of four-year high school education by dint of the various merits that students can
derive.
