QUESTION 25:

Find the preheat temperature to weld bisalloy 80 material 25mm thick from the following
information and using the following equations.

The chemical composition of the material is as follows,

C = 0.23%, P = 0.025%, Mn = 1.5%, Si = 0.3%, Cr = 1.2%, Ni = 0.35%, S = 0.008%, Al =

0.007%.

Determine the minimum preheat requirements from the above information and the
following welding parameters.

Arc voltage = 21 volts.

Welding current = 220 amps.
Welding speed = 150mm/min.

Find the following information,

a) What is the carbon equivalent of the steel?

b) What is the material weldability group number?

c) What is the joint weldability index?

d) What is the arc energy input?

e) What is the minimum preheat required?

CE = C + Mn + Cr + Mo + V + Ni + Cu

Heat Input = 60 EL
1000V

V = Travel speed.

QUESTION 27:

From the following chemical compositions of steels, work out the carbon equilivant for
welding purposes.

Using the formulae attached to the sheet – chapter 4 – welding of steels.

If the steel does not contain a chemical element that is in the formulae, disregard it and
only use what is in the steel.

For example if it does not contain chrome do not use it in the formulae, and if it contains
chemical elements that are not in the formulae do not use them.

A) C = 0.3%
Mn = 1.2%
Cr = 0.5%
Mo = 0.25%

B) C = 0.15%
Mn = 1.5%
Cr = 0.4%
V = 0.3%
Ni = 0.3%

C) C = 0.25%
Mn = 1.25%
Cr = 0.5%
Cu = 0.05%

D) C = 0.20%
Mn = 1.3%
Cr = 0.55%
Mo = 0.35%
V = 0.15%
Ni = 0.15%
Cu = 0.12%
