Mill certificates will indicate chemical and physical properties of steel bars, including records of tensile and bend tests from Independent Testing Agency. B. Shop Drawings: Submit shop drawings for fabrication, bending and placement of concrete reinforcing bars also known as Rebar Layout and Cutting Schedule. Comply with ACI 315 - Manual of Standard Practice for Detailing Reinforced Concrete Structures showing bars, arrangements and assemblies as required for fabrication and placement. Include special reinforcement required at openings through concrete structures. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.01 MATERIALS A. General: Upon delivery, reinforcing bars shall be free of loose or flaky rust and mill scale or coating, including any other substance that would reduce or destroy bond with concrete. Application of red lead primer paint to counteract the development of rust prior to storage shall not be permitted. Due to the nature of the material in which unavoidable oxidation causes steel bars to rust in prolonged storage, the Engineer shall measure using a calibrated caliper, verify and confirm that the steel bars on stock have not diminished significantly in nominal diameter size and are still sound and/ or justifiable for utilization for steel reinforcements. Application of rust converters shall be to the discretion of the Engineer. B. Reinforcing Bars: Conform to SASO 2; or ASTM A 615 including supplementary requirement S1; or ASTM A 706. Use Grade 60 (fy = 420 MPa) deformed bars, unless otherwise indicated on Drawings. All high yield bars shall be deformed bars to conform A 706.
ITAG INTERNATIONAL CO. Section 03 2000-1 CONCRETE REINFORCING
C. Steel Tie Wire: Conform to ASTM A 82 plain cold-drawn steel, (fy = 465 MPa). D. Welded Wire Fabric: Conform to SASO 224 or ASTM A 185, (fy = 500 MPa) or ASTM A497 whichever is applicable. E. Mechanical Splicers (Couplers): Conform to ACI 318 Type 1 (125% Specified Yield) F. Supports for Reinforcement: Use bolsters, chairs, spacers and other devices for spacing, supporting and fastening reinforcement in place. 1. Use wire bar type conforming to the recommendations of CRSI or precast concrete type supports, and as approved by the Engineer, unless otherwise indicated. Do not use wood, brick, and other unacceptable materials. 2. For exposed concrete surfaces, where legs of supports are in contact with forms, provide supports with plastic spacers. 2.02 TRANSPORTATION, HANDLING, STORAGE, AND PROTECTION A. Deliver all steel reinforcement bars to site bundled, tagged and marked. Use metal tags indicating bar sizes, lengths and other information corresponding to markings shown on placement diagrams. B. Store the steel reinforcement bar materials at site off the ground and in covered storage sheds to prevent damage, rust and accumulation of dirt or deleterious materials. C. Acid-based elements and other harmful chemicals should be kept away from the stock yard. D. All reinforcement shipments shall be unloaded only after satisfactory report of the Engineer. 2.03 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. The Engineer shall verify and confirm the authenticity of information detailed in the Mill Certificate. The contractor shall not tamper nor forge the details indicated in the Mill Certificate and shall furnish the Engineer an original copy of the aforementioned. 2.04 FABRICATION A. General: 1. Fabricate reinforcing bars to conform to required shapes and dimensions, with fabrication tolerances complying with ACI 315. 2. Reinforcement shall be bent cold unless otherwise permitted by the Engineer. 3. In case of fabricating errors, do not re-bend or straighten reinforcement in a manner that will injure or weaken the material. 4. Reinforcement shall not be subjected to welding or to prolonged or extreme heating such as cutting by blow torch unless otherwise permitted by the Engineer. B. Unacceptable Materials: Steel reinforcements with any of the following defects will not be permitted in the work: 1. Bar lengths, depths and bends exceeding specified fabrication tolerances. 2. Bends, hooks or kinks not indicated on Drawings or final shop Drawings. 3. Bars with reduced cross-section due to excessive rusting or other causes. 4. Bars with surfaces having severe rust, rust scale or loose mill scale or contaminated with dirt, earth, paints, oils or other deleterious material. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 INSPECTION A. Examine substrate as well as the conditions under which concrete reinforcement shall be installed and correct any unsatisfactory conditions. Proceed with the work after correcting unsatisfactory conditions in an acceptable manner to the Engineer. 3.02 INSTALLATION A. Comply with the specified codes and standards, and Concrete Reinforcing Institute recommended practice for placing reinforcing bars, for details and methods of reinforcement placement and supports, and as herein specified. B. Clean reinforcement to remove rust, rust scale and loose mill scale, dirt, earth, paints, oils or other deleterious material. C. Position, support and secure reinforcement against displacement by formwork construction, or concrete placement operations. Locate and support reinforcing by chairs, runners, bolsters, spacers and hangers, as required. D. Place reinforcement to obtain the minimum coverage for concrete protection. Arrange, space and securely tie bars and bar supports together with 1.6 mm annealed wire to hold reinforcement accurately in position during concrete placement operations. Set wire ties so that ends are directed away from exposed concrete surfaces. E. Nominal concrete cover to reinforcement shall be as follows unless otherwise noted in drawing: 1. Surface poured against earth = 75mm 2. Retaining wall earth face = 75mm 3. Retaining wall inner face = 40mm 4. Foundation earth face = 75mm 5. Foundation inner face = 75 mm 6. Beams and Columns = 40mm 7. Slabs = 20mm 8. Shear Wall = 40mm F. Install welded wire fabric in as long lengths as practicable. Lap adjoining pieces as indicated but at least one full mesh and lace splices with 1.6 mm annealed wire. Offset end laps in adjacent widths to prevent continuous laps. G. Provide sufficient numbers of supports and of strength to carry reinforcement. Do not place reinforcing bars more than 50 mm beyond the last leg of any continuous bar support. Do not use supports as bases for runways for concrete conveying equipment and similar construction loads. H. Splices: Provide reinforcement splices by lapping ends, placing bars in contact, and tightly wire tying. Comply with requirements on Drawings for location and lap of splices or, if no requirements are shown or indicated, with ACI 318 for minimum lap of spliced bars. All splices required should conform Section 12.14 of ACI 318. For reinforcement bars equal or more 32mm diameter mechanical splicers (coupler) are required. I. Protect reinforcement when not being worked and until placement of concrete by covering with polyethylene or similar impermeable sheeting. J. No welding of reinforcement shall be permitted, unless approved by Engineer.
