Title: Linear Inequalities in Two Variables
Inequality – a statement that compares two quantities or expressions that are not
equal.
o For example, 8 > 2, and also 5 < 2 • 3.
o An inequality contains one of these signs: < (less than), ≤ (less than or
equal to), > (greater than), or ≥ (greater than or equal to)
Linear inequality – an inequality whose graph is a half-plane with a linear boundary.
o The linear inequality graphed to the right is
y < 5x + 5.
The shaded part of the graph
contains all points that are solutions
to this inequality.
The boundary is the line with the
equation y = 5x + 5, and is dashed
because the inequality symbol used
(<) does not include the “equal to”
part.
Learning Competencies with the code: Illustrates and graphs linear inequalities in two
variables (Week 1 – M8AL-IIa-2)
Exercises / Activities:
Karisa collects candles and mugs. She only has one shelf to display them on. The maximum
number of items that will fit on the shelf is 10. (The candles and mugs are about the same size.)
1. Tell whether each of the following combinations will fit on the shelf.
2. An inequality compares two quantities or expressions that are not equal. Write an inequality for
how many candles (c) and mugs (m) the shelf can hold. Use a “less than” (<), “less than or
equal to” (≤), “greater than” (>), or “greater than or equal to” (≥) symbol in your answer.
The statement you wrote above is a linear inequality. In the Linear Inequalities in Two
Variables, you will graph linear inequalities. The graphs of linear inequalities consist of a
dashed or solid line, and a shaded region.
