Answer and explain the following:

1. How voltage is produced in an AC and DC generators?

An AC generator is a device to convert mechanical energy to electrical energy. Alternating current is

produced by electric generators which is based to the principle of electromagnetic induction. Which is a
changed in flux linked to a coil induces an electric current in the coil. As the coils rotate, they open and
close with respect to the magnetic field and produce an electric current that reverses direction every half
turn. In a DC generator the voltage is induced in coils by the rate of change of the magnetic field through
the coils as the machine rotates. This induced voltage is inherently alternating in form since the coil flux
increases and then decreases, with a zero average value

2. Is the voltage induced in a DC generator alternating current or direct current?

There is no DC voltage induced in any DC generator. The induced voltage in a DC generator is first
induced in an AC manner through varying area or magnetic flux with time and then it is the
commutator with the timing of the switching copper segments and its brushes that switch the AC into
a rectified DC.

3. What are the basic parts of an AC and DC generators?

AC generators basic parts are the following:
1. Two pole magnet (North pole and South pole magnets)
2. Armature coil
3. Slip rings
4. Load
5. Brush
DC generators basic parts are the following:
1. Two pole magnet (North pole and South pole magnets)
2. Stator
3. Armature coil
4. Brushes
5. Magnetic field
6. Commutator
7. Windings
