Fourth Quarter Exam in Grade 11-Physical Science
Name:_________________________________ Grade/Strand:_____________ Score:________
I. Multiple choices.
Direction: Choose and Write the letter of the correct answer on the space provided before the number.
_______1.Which graph below shows an object slowing down?

_____2. Friction is a force that always acts.

_____2. A Type of motion influences by gravity alone.

a. Natural motion
b. Unnatural motion
c. Violent motion
d. Projectile motion

______3. The law of inertia applies to

a. objects at rest.
b. moving objects.
c. both moving and nonmoving objects.
d. None of the choices

______4. You and a friend are jumping on a trampoline. Why does Earth, which is rapidly orbiting around the sun, not
move under your feet when you jump?

a. There are different rules in space and on the surface of the earth
b. Newton’s first law holds that your body moves along with Earth because it is not compelled to change its motion
by an unbalanced force.
c. Newton’s second law holds that the acceleration produced by the force of gravity is offset by the force of friction
on your feet.
d. Newton’s third law holds that there is an equal and opposite force exerted by the trampoline on your feet, which
allows you to move with Earth through space.

______5. An object following a straight-line path at constant speed

a. has no forces acting on it.

b. has a net force acting on it in the direction of motion.
c. Has zero acceleration.
d. none of the above

______6. Which of the following is NOT true about Aristotle’s concept of violent motion?

a. Violent motion is imposed motion

b. Violent motion has an external cause
c. Violent motion is the result of forces that push or pull
d. Violent motion is thought to be either straight up or straight down

______8. The main difference between Aristotle and Galileo is

a. Aristotle thought that the Earth revolved around the sun.

b. Galileo though that some changes in speed occurred without forces
c. Galileo thought that forces were always required to change an object’s speed
d. Aristotle used experiments to develop his ideas, whereas Galileo developed his ideas from his observations.
______9. If you flip a coin straight up into the air in a moving vehicle, which of these could NOT happen? (All answers
describe motion relative to the vehicle.)
a. The coin lands exactly where it started.
b. The vehicle slows down and the coin flies backward.
c. The vehicle turns and the coin moves the opposite way
d. The vehicle accelerates, and the coin flies backward.

_______10. A type of motion in which an object moves in a parabolic path under the influences of gravity.

a. Natural motion
b. Unnatural motion
c. Violent motion
d. Projectile motion

II. True/False. Write A if the statement is TRUE and B if the statement is FALSE on the space provided
before the number.
____11.The name of the astronomer who first publicly stated that Earth revolves around the sun is Galileo.
____12.Friction refers to the force between two surfaces that are sliding past each other.
____13.A force can be simply defined as a push or a pull.
____14.Inertia is the property that every material object has; inertia resists changes in an object's state of motion.
____15.If a hockey puck were to slide on a perfectly frictionless surface, it will eventually slow down because of its inertia
____16.If you were to slide a hockey puck across a frictionless ice rink, there must be a horizontal force on it to keep it in
motion.

____17.The amount of matter in an object is its weight.

____18. Cosmetic product is used to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the human body.

____19.The force due to gravity acting on an object is its mass.

____20.Galileos views in free falling objects: In the absence of air resistance, all object fall at the same rate.
____21.An astronaut weighs the same on Earth as in space.
____22.An astronaut has the same mass on Earth as in space.
____23.The reason a penny thrown straight up inside an airplane will come back to your hand is that you, the air inside
the plane, and the penny are all moving at the same horizontal velocity.
____24. Cleaning Agents are substances that are used to removed duct, stains, and foul odors on surface.
____25. Newton’s third law of motion or Law of Action-Reaction, for every action. There is an equal and opposite reaction.

III. Essay.
1. What is the differences between diurnal and annual motion?(10pts.)

IV. Solving: Solve the following.10 points each

1. Satellite A, at a distance of 6.0 units, orbit a planet in 2.0 weeks. Satellite B, orbits it in 7.0 weeks. How far is it
from the planet?

2. Galileo is often credited with the early discovery of four of Jupiter’s many moons. The moons orbiting Jupiter
follow the same laws of motion as the planets orbiting the sun. One of the moon is called Io-its distance from
Jupiter’s center is 5 units and it orbits Jupiter in 2 earth days. Another moons is called Ganymede; it is 11 units
from Jupiter’s center. Make a prediction of the period of Ganymede using Kepler’s law of harmonies.
