1 Overview
1.1 Introduction
The ESM is an energy storage unit composed of lithium-ion batteries. It features better charge
and discharge performance, longer service life, and less self-discharge loss than ordinary
batteries.
The ESM consists of electrochemical cells, an energy storage management unit (ESMU),
power and signal terminals, and mechanical parts. It can be used as an independent 48 V unit,
supports the mix use of old and new batteries as well as lithium and lead-acid batteries, and
can collaborate with third-party power systems.

Features
Parallel connection for power expansion: The maximum power (P) of N ESMs
connected in parallel can reach 15 kW. For details, see 2.1 Parallel Connection.
Application in class B environments with direct ventilation: The ESM can be used in
indoor environments where the ambient temperature and humidity are not controlled or
outdoor environments (with simple shielding measures) where the humidity can reach
100%.
Supporting third-party power systems: The ESM implements lithium battery
self-management so that it can be used with third-party power systems.
Hybrid use: The ESM can be connected in parallel with lead-acid batteries.
Maintenance-free: The maintenance-free feature in the use of the ESM reduces the costs
of battery O&M and the frequency of site visits.
Long service life: The ESM life is two or three times the life of common lead-acid
batteries. The battery state of health (SOH) and state of charge (SOC) can be monitored
online in real time. These features improve the reliability of site power backup.

2 Application Description
environment, deploy an air conditioner-controlled cabinet with the protection rating of at least
IP55.
Environments subject to atmospheric corrosion can be classified into four categories:
Class A environment (controlled environment): refer to indoor environments where the
ambient temperature and humidity are controlled (including rooms where people live)
and the relative humidity of air is controlled below 65%.
Class B environment (uncontrolled environment): refer to indoor environments where
the ambient temperature and humidity are not controlled or outdoor environments (with
simple shielding measures) where the humidity can reach 100%.
Class C environment (harsh environment): refer to outdoor land environments (with
simple shielding measures) near seas or pollution sources. If a site is near a sea, it is
0.5–3.7 km away from the sea. If a site is near a pollution source, it is at most 3.7 km
away from salt lakes, 3 km away from heavy pollution sources such as smelteries, coal
mines, and thermal power plants, 2 km away from medium pollution sources such as
chemical, rubber, and galvanization industries, or 1 km away from light pollution sources
such as packing houses, tanneries, and boiler rooms.
Class D environment (sea environment): refer to outdoor land environments (with simple
shielding measures) at most 500 m away from the seashore or environments on the sea.
2. After installation and commissioning are complete, the mains power is switched off
directly without powering off the ESM. The ESM can enter the low power mode only
after being completely discharged, and the interval for onsite acceptance check is long.
3. Other reasons result in that the ESM cannot enter the low power mode normally.
6. ESMs should be delivered based on the "first in, first out" rule.
7. Install ESMs in a dry, clean, and ventilated environment that is free from sources of
strong infrared radiation, organic solvents, and corrosive gases. Do not expose the ESMs
to sunlight or water and keep them far away from sources of ignition.
1. If ESMs have been stored overdue, promptly report the event to the department leader.
2. Dispose of bulging ESMs directly irrespective of how long they have been stored.
3. The storage duration (t) starts from the latest charge time on the ESM package. The latest charge
time is updated after every charge.
4. If an ESM is qualified after charge, mark the latest charge time and the next recharge time on the
ESM packing case. The next recharge time is 8 months (stored above 30°C) or 12 months (stored
below 30°C) later than the latest charge time. The total storage duration should not exceed the
warranty period.
4. After removing the cables, hold down the red MANUAL ON/OFF button on the front
panel for at least 5s and less than 15s, wait until all indicators on the front panel turn off,
and place the ESM in the original packing case. Modify the latest charge time and the
next recharge time marked on the original packing case.
The customer purchases or borrows a DC regulated power supply that supports 48 V charge
and recharges ESMs by performing the following steps:
1. Connect the positive and negative terminals of the ESM to the output positive and
negative terminals on the DC regulated power supply, respectively.
Figure 3-1 Connecting cables between the ESM and the DC regulated power supply
2. Set charge parameters for the DC regulated power supply. For details, see Table 3-2.
3. After removing the cables, hold down the red MANUAL ON/OFF button on the front
panel for at least 5s and less than 15s, wait until all indicators on the front panel turn off,
and place the ESM in the original packing case. Modify the latest charge time and the
next recharge time marked on the original packing case.
≥ 51 V ≥ 48 V
1. For the ESM that meets the standard after recharge, disconnect cables from it, hold down the red
MANUAL ON/OFF button on the front panel for at least 5s and less than 15s, wait until all
indicators on the front panel turn off, and then place it in the original packing case. Mark the latest
charge time and the next recharge time (the next recharge time is 12 months later than the current
charge time by default) on the packing case. Packed ESMs should be used as soon as possible.
2. If the ESM is not qualified after recharge, recharge it again. If the ESM is still not qualified, dispose
of it.
Prerequisites
Ensure that ESMs are from the same manufacturer, of the same model, and in the same batch.
Comply with regulations and warnings issued by the ESM manufacturer.
Before installing ESMs, ensure that the battery circuit breakers in the power system are OFF
or that the battery fuses are removed.
4.1 Installation

of the rack, install the floating nuts delivered with the cabinet.
Step 2 Push the ESM into the cabinet and secure it.
The ESM-48100A1 weighs 70 kg. Check the loading capability of the rack tray before
installation.
The ESM-48100A1 is 560 mm deep. Check the depth of the rack before installation.
If only one ESM is installed, it should be placed in a 19-inch rack with the guide rails and
tray. Ensure that its loading capability meets requirements.
If multiple ESMs are installed, a certain clearance should be reserved so at least 5 U is
required for each ESM. The ESMs cannot be directly stacked, vertically placed, or laid on
one side.
Install ESMs from the bottom up. They should be installed at least on two layers, and three
layers are recommended.

Performing the power-on procedure provided in this section may result in power failure or
alarms. Inform the alarm center before and after the procedure.
The power-on procedure involves various technologies and should be performed by
trained personnel according to the power-on instructions.
During operations, stand on dry insulating material and do not wear any conductors such
as jewelry or watches. Use insulated tools during power-on.
Do not establish contact between electrical points that have different electric currents.
When you are performing operations and do not want others to operate, attach the label
"Currently being serviced. Do not switch on." to the power distribution equipment.
During the power-on procedure, shut down the system immediately if any fault is detected.
Rectify the fault and proceed with the procedure.
Step 1 Switch on the battery circuit breakers and the circuit breaker connected to activation cables in
the power system.
If the Huawei power monitoring module is connected to the ESM for the first time, the
monitoring module will restart automatically as battery management parameters need to be
switched to the ESM.
Step 2 When multiple ESMs connected in parallel are powered on, observe the RUN indicator on
each ESM panel. Communication is normal if the indicator is steady on and is not established
if it blinks at short intervals. Check the communications cables between ESMs and rectify the
fault.
Step 3 When the ESMs are communicating with the monitoring module, check whether the
communication is normal. If the RUN indicator on an ESM is steady on, the ESM
communicates properly with the monitoring module. If the indicator is blinking at short
intervals, the communication is interrupted. In this case, check that the communications cable
is properly connected.
Step 4 Observe the ESMs for 15 minutes. Ensure that they are working properly (the ALM indicator
is off and the RUN indicator is steady on).

6.2 Misoperations
The following lists some misoperations that should be avoided.
7 Warranty Rules
Huawei will not be liable for any damage to Huawei ESMs caused by force majeure.
− Natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and landslides
− Fires
− Wars
− Lightning strikes
Huawei will not be liable for any damage to Huawei ESMs caused by the following
events:
− Damage such as breakage and leakage is caused to the ESMs due to misoperations
or incorrect connections during the ESM transportation and installation performed
by the customer.
− The customer does not recharge the ESMs in time and the ESMs are stored more
than six months longer than the storage term, which causes capacity loss or
irreversible damage to the ESMs.
− After the ESMs are installed and connected to the system, the customer does not
power on the ESMs in time, which causes the ESMs to be overdischarged and
further causes damage to the ESMs.
− Damage is caused to ESMs because they are not accepted in time due to customer
reasons.
− Damage is caused to ESMs because the operating environment or external power
parameters do not meet operating environment requirements. For example, the
ambient temperature is poor, power outage frequently occurs in the power grid, the
ESMs are frequently overdischarged due to the customer's improper maintenance,
the capacity of a customer site is expanded, and the ESMs are not fully charged for
a long period.
− The customer changes the ESM use scenarios without notifying Huawei.
− Damage to ESMs is caused by the customer or a third party, for example, the
customer relocates or reinstalls ESMs without notifying Huawei.
− The customer does not correctly set ESM operating management parameters
including but not limited to ESM capacity, number of ESMs, equalized charging
voltage, float charging voltage, charge current limit, and disconnection voltage.
− The customer does not service ESMs based on the appropriate operation guide. For
example, the customer does not periodically check whether ESM terminal screws
are tightened.
− The customer connects extra loads to ESMs.
− The customer mixes Huawei ESMs with other ESMs, which causes the acceleration
of capacity deterioration. For example, the customer uses Huawei ESMs together
with the ESMs of other brands or rated capacities, or with old ESMs.
− ESMs are stolen.
− The ESM warranty expires.
