What Is Space Colonizing?
Space Colonization is simply making a permanent habitat out from
Earth.

Why Space Colonizing?
  Population Crisis

  High competition for resources

Signs of Earth destruction and Threats to life on Earth.

Planet will be inhabitable due the activities of human

  To Save the Humanity

  Space exploration and tourism

Economical Advantages (space industries, mineral mining, etc.)

Main Challenges
1.  Discovering à Finding a habitable exoplanet
which is relatively closer to earth.

2.  Traveling à Travel to that particular planet.

3.  Colonizing à Building a civilization.

1. Discovering Exoplanets
Methods of Detecting Exoplanets
  Transit Method
  Direct Imaging
  Gravitational Micro Lensing
Radial Velocity Method (Using Doppler Shift)

Astrometry (Using the wobbling effect of a star)

Transit Method
When a planet passes in front of the star its apparent brightness
changes. If the Brightness of the star is plotted with the time (light
curve), we can see a small depression at the time when planet is
passing in front of the star. This concludes the presence of a planet.

Gravitational Micro Lensing
Gravitational micro lensing happens due an planet that is orbiting
around a star which located in between the earth and a distance
energy source like galaxy. Due to slight bending light we see small
fluctuations in the image of the distant galaxy.

Direct Imaging
In this method, pictures of exoplanet orbiting distant stars are
directly captured. This is done at different wavelengths.

Astrometry
In this method wobbling effect of stars are examined. In order to the
occurrence of wobbling effect there has to be a unseen mass.
Therefore what cause wobbling effect of the star is a exoplanet.

Radial Velocity Method
Here we use Doppler effect (red shifts and blue shifts) to determine
the radial velocity of the star. From that we find exoplanets.

2. Interstellar Travelling
(expressed in light years)

(Long-term Isolation, Radiation, Health

issues, Asteroids and space debris, etc.)

  Hibernation

  Wormholes (Einstein Rosen Bridge)

  Warp Drive (Alcubierre Drive)

Artificial Black Hole (using Hawking Radiation)

© Nalanda College Astronomical Society 2021

Hibernation
During hibernation humans
are kept in a state where the
metabolic rate of the body is
reduced, so that the humans
can sleep for decades or even
for centuries until they reach
their destination, without
aging that much.

Einstein
Rosen Bridge
Albert Einstein and physicist
Nathan Rosen put forwarded
the Theory of Einstein Rosen
Bridge. It’s a bridge that
connects two universes. This
is also known as wormholes.
Wormhole is simply a tunnel
between two black holes that
connect distant regions of
space-time. So it’s like a
shortcut.

Warp drive
A spacecraft equipped with warp
drive can travel at superluminal
speeds (faster than the speed of
light). In theory nothing can pass
the speed of light. That’s the
universal speed limit.
Then how can we achieve
super-luminal speeds?
In warp drive while moving
through the space, spaceship will
warp and push the the space
around it backwards resulting
greater speeds.

3. Colonizing
Natural Satellites à Moon, Titan, Europa, etc.

  Planets à Mars

  Large Asteroids

  Solar Orbits à Artificial Colonies

Lagrange Points (of planetary orbits) à L4 & L5 points

  Exoplanets

Basic needs for human life à Air, Water, Food

Energy Sources à Radiation, Geothermal, Wind, Nuclear

  Harvesting, Fertilizers and Garbage

  Architecture à House, Bunkers

Environmental Factors à Radiation, Diseases, Gravity

What are the already existing life forms

Why scientists are still not
Interested in space colonization?
Earth is not in a great danger yet.

Still humans can thrive on Earth.

No severe competition for resources on Earth.

  Lack of technological development

  The “wait calculation”

  The Martian (Colonizing Mars)

The 100 (Recolonizing Earth / Grounders)

Interstellar (Wormhole Concept & Time dilation)

  Passenger (Hibernation)

Star trek, Star Wars (Warp Drive)
