SAFE WORK
PRACTICES
SAFE WORK PRACTICES:
Responsibilities:
 The employer shall provide the safety-related work
practices and shall train the employee,
 and the employee shall then implement them.
Working around electricity means employee must follow
special work practices.
Several personal activities affects employee safety.
When Working near exposed live parts or
working on live circuits:
1) “REMOVE CONDUCTIVE ARTICLES”:

~ Must Remove:
 Jewelry.
 Metal-frame eyeglasses.
 Metal headgear.
 Key Chains.
 Clothing with conductive threads or decorations.
2)WEAR SUITABLE CLOTHING :
Wear natural fiber or non-melting clothing, including
underwear.
Never wear nylon, polyester, spandex, acetate or
polypropylene next to your skins.
These fibers melt, stick and cause severe burns.
For higher hazard jobs, all clothing may need to be flame-
resistant, even if worn under a flash suit.
Check with your supervisor for gear approved for the work
you’re doing.
3)CHECK TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
Always Check and Double-Check tools and equipment voltage
rating before use.
Inspect for wear and other damage.
Keep tools and equipment away from contacts with live parts.
Pay attentions to chain, pipes and scaffolding.
4) WORKING ON/NEAR LIVE PARTS:
Assume everything is live until proven otherwise.
Test to double check even if a system seems to be de-
energized.
Have a clear view of the job before you begin work.
Don’t work without enough light or when your view is
obstructed.
Never reach blindly into equipment or other areas that
might contain exposed live parts.
5) WORKING IN A CONFINED SPACE :

When working in a confined space like manhole or

vault be sure to:

Place a powerful barrier or insulating materials between

you and exposed live parts.

Secured hinged panels or doors so that they don’t move

and knock you into exposed live parts.
6)WORKING NEAR OVERHEAD ENERGIZED LINES:
~ Keep vehicles and mechanical equipment 10 feet from the
energized overhead lines.
Distance can be reduced to 4 feet if the vehicles is in transit with its
structure lowered.
Stay from and do not touch vehicles and elevated equipment operating
near energized lines unless properly protected.
Keep unqualified persons out of the area using signs, barricades.
If marking the work area does not provide sufficient warning , in such
cases, station an attendant to keep people outside the limited approach
boundary.
Attendant stay until hazard is gone or work undertaken is completed.

HEAD CLEARNACE, APPROACH DISTANCE
CONCULSION:
Everyone agrees equipment should be de-energized and in
an electrically safe working condition before work is carried
out.
But when that is not possible, the qualified professional
knows how to get the job done safely.
