ST MARY’S COLLEGE

AUCKLAND
SCHOLARSHIPS INFORMATION
BOOKLET
FOR 2020

St Mary’s College is an Integrated Catholic school for girls, the oldest existing
secondary school for girls in Auckland and one of the oldest schools in New Zealand.
It is owned by the Sisters of Mercy New Zealand, a Religious Congregation whose
pioneering Sisters, led by Mother Cecilia Maher, arrived from Ireland in 1850.

For over 160 years the Sisters of Mercy have inspired and empowered generations of
New Zealand women to fulfil their highest potential. These women have been
encouraged to strive for excellence and to show kindness and compassion. The
College is proud of the loyalty of its many hundreds of past pupils.

St Mary’s College offers a wide-ranging and balanced curriculum. The prime focus is
academic excellence and St Mary’s offers a quality high balanced education. The
educational experience of the girls is divided into two stages and the emphasis
changes as the girls mature and progress.

The Junior School: Years 7 – 10

The Major aims are:

 To give students a sound grounding in the core subjects.

 To give students the opportunity to explore a wide range of other subject areas.
 To prepare students for study in the senior school.

The Senior School: Years 11 – 13

The Major aims are:

 To provide each student with a relevant course of study that matches individual
strengths, abilities and interests.
 To give students a sound preparation in the subjects they are studying for
external awards and qualifications.
2
 To equip students for the transition from school to further education,
employment and adult life.

The College offers a small number of scholarships to students of exceptional ability

and/or musical aptitude and/or financial need. The scholarships that the College
offers are due to the generosity of our past pupils, friends and benefactors.
