EN GARDE – RULES

OBJECT OF THE GAME:


First player to win FIVE rounds.

PREPARATION:
Before each ROUND, shuffle the deck and deal each player FIVE cards.
SILVER starts in the first round, and then the starting player alternates.

IN A TURN:
Perform one of the following actions.
Discard cards FACE UP to the discard pile.
Draw cards from the deck to replenish your hand.

POSSIBLE ACTIONS:
MOVE FORWARDS OR BACKWARDS – 1 CARD
Move your fencer a number of spaces equal to the card value.
A fencer cannot move off the board.
A fencer cannot move through the space containing the other fencer.

ATTACK – 1, 2, or 3 CARDS
Play a card that allows the fencer to land on his opponent’s space.
Then play multiple cards of the same value (if required) to strengthen
the attack.
Replenish hand.
The opponent must now PARRY or else lose the round.
– PARRY – 1 or 2 CARDS
The opponent must play an equal number of cards of the same value
as the card(s) played by the attacker.
The opponent then takes his own turn (without drawing new cards).
The opponent can then replenish his hand.

ADVANCE AND ATTACK – 1 CARD + 1, 2, or 3 CARDS


Play one card to move fencer forward (without landing on opponent).
Then play one card that allows the fencer to land on his opponent’s
space.
Then play multiple cards of the same value (if required) to strengthen
the attack.
Replenish hand.
The opponent must now PARRY or RETREAT or else lose the round.
– PARRY – 1 or 2 CARDS
The same rules apply as stated overleaf.
– RETREAT – 1 CARD
The opponent plays one card to move backwards, which counts as his
turn.
The opponent can then replenish his hand.

ENDING A ROUND:
A round ends as soon as the last card is drawn. The winner in this case is
determined in the following way:

LAST ACTION WAS AN ATTACK -


Opponent MUST PARRY, or else he loses.
Then both players reveal their hands.
If either player has cards that would allow an attack, the player with
the most wins.
If this fails to produce a winner, the winner is the fencer who has
travelled the farthest.

LAST ACTION WAS AN ADVANCE AND ATTACK -


Opponent MUST PARRY or RETREAT.
- PARRY -
Both players reveal their hands.
If either player has cards that would allow an attack, the player with
the most wins.
If this fails to produce a winner, the winner is the fencer who has
travelled the farthest.
- RETREAT -
The winner is the fencer who has travelled the farthest.

LAST ACTION WAS A BASIC MOVE -


Both players reveal their hands.
If either player has cards that would allow an attack, the player with
the most wins.
If this fails to produce a winner, the winner is the fencer who has
travelled the farthest.

The winner moves his scoring stone one space along the scoring track
and the next round begins.
