II. Essay

A. In the story. “The Small Key” by Paz Latorena, what is evident to be very Filipino-like
scenario as observed in our daily living? What does the small key symbolize for?

B. What is prominent in the story, “The Mats” that is considered a true depiction of the
Filipino family?

● The true depiction of the Filipino families is that the mat is a sign of peace, good health,
and a refuge from illness. Because of its intricate nature and embroideries, it was a
symbol of healing as well as beauty and elegance. Although it symbolizes good health
and a refuge of being sick, for us, it also kind of depicts a symbol of suppressed sorrow
and agony as some of the children who took refuge on that particular mat died and were
not fortunate enough to be “rejuvenated by the healing powers” of the mat

C. What are the realities of life situations in the story, My Father Goes to Court?
