Personal and possessive pronouns


Do you know how to use the personal and the possessive
pronouns?
A pronoun is used in place of a noun.
A pronoun refers to a noun that comes before it. The noun it refers to what is called the
antecedent.
A personal pronoun can be used as subject, object, possessive and reflexive.

Object pronoun:
1. Object pronoun are placed after the verb.

The accountant called John yesterday.


• The accountant called him yesterday.

2. When there are two pronouns in a sentence, the pronoun for things comes before
the pronoun for people.

Ana writes a letter to the supervisor.


Ana writes it to her
She comes with me

What does she write? A letter (it - thing)


To whom does she write a letter? To the supervisor (her/him - people)
More example:
I gave the report to Sheyla I gave it to her

Mary saw the firm with the managers. Mary saw it with them

Rita and Mary make cookies with Julie Rita and Mary make them with her.

Note: them is used to people and for thing

3. Object pronouns are placed after a preposition.

The secretary sat between them

The possessive pronouns:


The possessives are used to indicate that something (someone) belongs to someone
(something).

Possessive pronouns:
To belong = pertenecer.
Example:
• This office is mine This office belongs to me.
• This is our English class this class belongs to us.
• This calendar is mine
• That computer is yours
• These documents are his

Noun possessives:
I. Possessive using an apostrophe.

1. The name of the secretary is Mary ---- The secretary’s name is Mary.
2. The friend of my brother ---- My brother’s friend.
3. The tail of the dog ---- The dog’s tail
4. The reports of the accountant ---- The accountant’s reports.
5. The books of the teacher ---- The teacher’s books

II. Do not use “the” in front of proper names.

1. The boss of Mary ---- Mary’s boss: El jefe de María


2. The problem of Bill ---- Bill’s problem
3. The children of Mrs. Stone ---- Mrs Stone’s children
4. The buildings of New York ---- New York’s buildings
5. The blessing of God ---- God’s blessing.

III. With nouns ending in “S” just add the apostrophe.

1. The desks of the clerks ---- The clerks’ desk


2. The exercise of the students ---- The students’ exercise
3. The car of James ---- James’ car
4. The office of Mr. Jones ---- Mr. Jones’ office
5. The opinion of the ladies ---- The ladies’ opinion

IV. Possessives forms with time words. The time word is the possessor.

1. One hour of work ---- One hour’s work


2. The salary of one month ---- One month’s salary
3. The newspaper of yesterday ---- Yesterday’s newspaper
4. The lesson of tomorrow ---- Tomorrow’s lesson
5. Vacation of a week ---- Week’s vacation

V. Use the possessive form only with the second noun.

1. The jobs of Mary and Joseph ---- Mary and Joseph’s jobs
2. the obligations of the boy and the girl ---- The boy and the girl’s obligations.
3. The locker of Joyce and John ---- Joyce and John’s locker
4. The examinations of the boys and the girls ---- the boys and the girls’ examination
