The modern architecture practices backed by traditional regional

techniques, have put India on a trail of transformation. Be it an
office, commercial building, private home, public toilets, or any
space, the focus of design has shifted to cater a different experience
for the user, rather than just blocks serving the functions.

The designing techniques, and thought processes are giving due cognizance to make
nature a part of daily human life irrespective of the building typology. Buildings show a
conscious approach for selecting materials that are both beneficial and add to aesthetic
value of the structure.

In the heritage-urban fabric of Hyderabad, the smallest plot size available in most of the
residential layouts is about 200 sq yards - 170 sq mts. This relatively small plot of 1,820
sq ft sits in a dense locality with buildings close to each other. The house came with a
large number of requirements to be fitted on a small plot.

This led to create an internally introverted house that caters the user with warmth of
natural light, air and green space. The façade of the house described in tones of yellow
and white, is sure to strike the attention of the passerby. This along with mild steel
screens, punctured with laser cut perforations, makes an interesting design element for
the eastern façade that transforms the interiors fascinatingly.

The variation in the size of the perforations follows the logic for maintaining the privacy
from the adjacent developments. The perforations are smaller where there’s nearness
to the adjoining building, while they are larger, where the building has a blank wall.

This system is covered with glass on top and stainless steel mesh on the side as a
protection from rain and insects. The filtered light through this powers the tropical
growth of the garden below. A cutout allows light all the way to the games room in the
basement below.

The plan followed a stilt layout to allocate space for parking on the small plot by lifting
up the garden on the first level. This helped in placing the servant’s quarter and a
recreational area on the ground level. On entering the first level, one is surprised by
the play of volumes and the lively ambiance of the interiors. The garden comes as an
unexpected beautiful oasis of green inside the house. The impact of the yellow perforated
screen is felt and experienced from the interiors, as it creates a beautiful play of light
and shadows on the walls and floors.

The living, kitchen, dining and study space, are all centered around the courtyard. A
small waterbody beside the living room is placed, which forms a part of the garden. This
makes for an interesting setting. The living/dining areas surrounding the garden have
operable, sliding glass doors to contain the air conditioning. When these are open the
whole length of the house behaves as a single space connected by the garden.

Master Bedroom sit-out

The second level is designed as a private zone with two bedrooms. The master bedroom
has an attached balcony looking into the internal garden and receives natural light
from the perforations above. A touch of craftsmanship is seen on the wardrobe that has
handmade cane work, which is a fast vanishing craft practice. The attached toilet is
made transparent so the planters inside are visible and are lit from the skylight above.

The kids bedroom has a balcony which opens onto the east and it also has a play nook
integrated into the wardrobe looking down onto the garden. The study room attached
has a planter under a slit skylight which forms a focal point as one enters the room.
The study area is lit with the eastern sun in the mornings which filters through the
perforated screen and hits the study desk.

The terrace floor has a social appeal to it as it has an open terrace, a sit-out area and
creates a provision for a guest bedroom. The services have been strategically pushed
towards the south to create a buffer from the heat.

The material palette is kept minimal and bright, with tints that add color and contrast in
form of furniture, furnishings and decors. The flooring is a mixture of yellow and white
cement oxide, handmade cement tiles, yellow tandoor and terracotta tiles. These lend
an ethnic character to the house. The ceilings are left exposed after the de-shuttering of
concrete slabs. Walls are mostly white with an occasional yellow highlighter.

Evening Façade

Wherever one is in the house they’re always aware of the elemental nature of the garden.
What adds magic to the house is that the perforations are opaque from the outside
during the daytime and when the light shines from within in the evening, they become
transparent and shine like yellow jewels!
