Example of Criterion B Command term explain.

Stage number, 𝑛 Length of the side of the Area of square, A

squares, L
1 3 9
2 5 25
3 7 49
4 9 81
5 11 121
6 13 169
7 15 225
8 17 289

Predict- Since this question asking for area, try to make sure all the missing values for A are all filled up.

Describe- (Do not describe with the general rule here!! For eg: the area of square is square of n- No
mark for describe like this!!)

Correct description- The area of square is quadratic sequence that increase with constant second
difference of 8, with first difference starting from 16, the area of square, A starting from 9.

Formulate general rule: The formula for quadratic sequence=

𝑎+𝑏+𝑐
3𝑎 + 𝑏
2𝑎

Remember to write the title of the general rule!!, A

𝐴 = 4𝑛2 + 4𝑛 + 1, 𝑛 = 1,2,3, …
Test with 2 GIVEN value.

For e.g.: Test n=2,3

𝐴2 = 4(2)2 + 4(2) + 1 = 25

𝐴3 = 4(3)2 + 4(3) + 1 = 81
Remember to explain and write the conclusion!!

Since 25 and 81 are the same with the values in the table, the general rule is tested.

Verify- with 1 NOT GIVEN value with TWO DIFFERENT METHOD.

For e.g.: Verify n=5

𝐴5 = 4(5)2 + 4(5) + 1 = 121

Then use the second method:

Continuation from the table, 81+40=121.

Remember to write the conclusion again:

Since 121=121, the general rule is verified.

Justify- Extra method(according to the theme of the questions) to further prove that the general rule is
correct.

For eg: The theme of this question is the area of squares. We can use the length of the side of the
squares to justify the general rule of area of squares.

According to the table, the length of the sides of squares, L is having the sequence of

3, 5, 7, 9, …
𝐿 = 2𝑛 + 1
By using the area formula of squares,

(2𝑛 + 1)2 = 4𝑛2 + 4𝑛 + 1

Remember to write conclusion:

Since the general rule of area is the same by using the area formula, the general rule is proven and
justified.
