Activity #01: Feedback Mechanisms

Directions:

 1.Visit the assigned link and read the introduction (https://pbslm-

contrib.s3.amazonaws.com/WGBH/conv16/conv16-int-bcc/index.html)
 2. Click START to activate the poor woman’s illness.
 3. Your job is to adjust the controls on the display so that blood delivery, oxygen need, blood
pressure, body temperature and glucose level are all balanced (green in the gauge provided). ○
If you fail at balancing these, you fail to heal your patient :( If she dies, just start over :)
 4. Keep track of how modifying each setting impacts other settings.
 5. Try to predict which body systems are interacting as these changes to other settings are
made.

1. How does increasing and decreasing heart rate impact blood delivery, oxygen need, blood pressure,
body temperature and glucose level?

Heart Rate Impact of Increase Impact of Decrease Body Systems or

Organs Affected
Blood Delivery High Low Circulatory System
Oxygen Needed Low High Respiratory System
Blood Pressure High High Circulatory System
Body Temperature High High Integumentary System
Glucose Level Low Low Circulatory and
Endocrine System

A. Summary: What patterns do you see in body activities when heart rate is INCREASED?

When the heart rate increases, the blood pressure and body temperature will have the same effect
going high and while the glucose level is low the oxygen needed will be low as well.

B. Summary: What patterns do you see in body activities when heart rate is DECREASED?

Both Oxygen needed and Blood pressure is in a high state while the body temperature is high and
glucose level is low.

2. How does increasing and decreasing respiration impact blood delivery, oxygen need, blood
pressure, body temperature and glucose level?

Respiration Impact of Increase Impact of Decrease Body Systems or

Organs Affected
Blood Delivery High High Circulatory System
Oxygen Needed Low High Respiratory System
Blood Pressure High High Circulatory System
Body Temperature High High Integumentary System
Glucose Level Low Low Circulatory and
Endocrine System
A. Summary: What patterns do you see in body activities when respiration is INCREASED?

When respiration is increased, the Heart Rate is high, the oxygen needed is low, the blood pressure is
high together with body temperature or perspiration, and the glucose level is low.

B. Summary: What patterns do you see in body activities when respiration is DECREASED?

If respiration is decreased, heart rate, oxygen needed, body temperature, blood pressure is high while
the glucose level is low.

3. How does increasing and decreasing dilation impact blood delivery, oxygen need, blood pressure,
body temperature and glucose level?

Dilation Impact of Increase Impact of Decrease Body Systems or

Organs Affected
Blood Delivery High High Circulatory System
Oxygen Needed Neutral Neutral Respiratory System
Blood Pressure Low High Circulatory System
Body Temperature Neutral High Integumentary System
Glucose Level low Low Circulatory and
Endocrine System

A. Summary: What patterns do you see in body activities when dilation is INCREASED?

When dilation is increased, body temperature and oxygen needed are in neutral phase, blood pressure
and glucose level are then low, while heart rate is high.

B. Summary: What patterns do you see in body activities when dilation is DECREASED?

When decreased, heart rate and glucose level are low, blood pressure and body temperature are high
while the oxygen needed is neutral.

4. How does increasing and decreasing perspiration impact blood delivery, oxygen need, blood
pressure, body temperature and glucose level?

Perspiration Impact of Increase Impact of Body Systems or

Decrease Organs Affected
Blood Delivery Neutral Neutral Circulatory System
Oxygen Needed Neutral Neutral Respiratory System
Blood Pressure High High Circulatory System
Body Temperature Low High Integumentary
System
Glucose Level Low Low Circulatory and
Endocrine System
A. Summary: What patterns do you see in body activities when perspiration is INCREASED?

When perspiration is increased, heart rate and oxygen needed are neutral, blood pressure is high while
body temperature and glucose level are low.

B. Summary: What patterns do you see in body activities when perspiration is DECREASED?

When decreased, heart rate and oxygen needed are neutral, blood pressure and body temperature are
high and the glucose level is low.

5. How does increasing and decreasing glucose level impact blood delivery, oxygen need, blood
pressure, body temperature and glucose level?

Glucose Level Impact of Increase Impact of Decrease Body Systems or

Organs Affected
Blood Delivery Neutral Neutral Circulatory System
Oxygen Needed Neutral Neutral Respiratory System
Blood Pressure High High Circulatory System
Body Temperature High High Integumentary System
Glucose Level High Low Circulatory and
Endocrine System

A. Summary: What patterns do you see in body activities when glucose level is INCREASED?

When increased, heart rate and oxygen needed are neutral, while blood pressure, body temperature
and glucose level are high.

B. Summary: What patterns do you see in body activities when glucose level is DECREASED?

When decreased, heart rate and oxygen needed are neutral, blood pressure and body temperature are
high and the glucose level is low.
