Improving the Reliability of Medium

Information
and High Voltage Auxiliary Equipment
PSIB 20140312A
Bulletin

Overview
Inform users of recommended inspections to be performed during outages and before energizing the unit for the first
time.

These inspections include inspections on steam turbine or gas turbine driven generators with medium and high voltage
equipment enclosures or compartments.

Recent events have emphasized the need for regular inspections of medium and high voltage equipment enclosures to
ensure that watertight integrity is being maintained. Generator terminal enclosures, generator auxiliary compartments
and other metal clad compartments connect high voltage components including the insulated bus bars, current
transformers (CT) and Voltage Transformers (VT) should be inspected.

Water and dirt ingress in these electrical enclosures and compartments can result in electrical equipment damage. Any
time water or moisture gets inside electrical equipment there is the possibility of a short circuit.

Water can enter through insulation and the bus openings if proper maintenance is not done.
Enclosures and compartments may include:
 Generator Auxiliary Compartment (GAC)
 Generator Excitation Compartment (GEC)
 Metal Clad Switchgear
 Generator Terminal Enclosure (GTE)
 Generator Line terminal Enclosure (GLTE)
 Generator Neutral terminal Enclosure (GNTE)
 Generator Line Accessory Compartment (GLAC)
 Generator Neutral Accessory Compartment (GNAC)
 Load Commutated Inverter & Excitation Compartment (LEC)
 Medium Voltage Cell (EPE units)
 Generator Voltage Transformer Cubicle
 Generator Neutral Grounding Cubicle
 Bus Auxiliary compartment (BAC)
 DC Link Reactor/AC link reactor
 ISO Phase Bus Duct (IPBD)

Advisory
 GE advises that all customers should follow maintenance and inspection recommendation as mentioned in the
O & M manuals.
 Please follow your vendor recommendations with regards to compartment or enclosure located in corrosive
environments. More aggressive inspection intervals may be required.
