Characteristics of Politics

1. Politics always involves the making of collective decisions for group of people
2. Those decisions are made by some members of the group exercising power over other members of
the group
1. It is the basic understanding of state and principles and ideals which underlie its organization and
activities.
2. It is primarily concerned with the association of human beings into body politic or in a political
community.
3. It ideals with those relations among men and groups which are subject to control by the state with
the relations of men and groups to the state itself and the relations of the state to another state.
GOVERNANCE VS GOVERNMENT
Governance
• IT IS DEFINED AS THE PROCESS OF DECISION MAKING BY WHICH DECISIONS
ARE IMPLEMENTED OR NOT IMPLEMENTED
Government
• IT REFERS TO THE AGENCY THROUGH WHICH THE WILL OF THE STATE IS
FORMULATED, EXPRESSED AND CARRIED OUT.

Values of Liberalism
• Individualism- It is belief in the supreme importance of the individual over any social group or
collective body.
• Freedom- the ability to think or act as one wishes a capacity that can be associated with the
individual, a social group or a nation.
• Reason- the capacity of the human being to take charge of their own lives and fashion their
own destinies
CONSERVATISM
• Political Philosophy that tends to support the status quo and advocates change only in
moderation upholding the value of tradition and seeks to preserve all that is good about the
past
SOCIALISM
SOCIAL DEMOCRACY- Favors the balance between the market and the state rather than the
abolition of capitalism it supports the full balance between market capitalism and state
intervention.

Communism
• It is an economic social and political system seeking government ownership of the

Fascism
Fasces- bundle of rods with an axe blade
Protruding that signified the authority of magistrates in Imperial Rome
Fascism is a movement that stands for outmoded , repressive social and political conditions
rejecting democracy, repudiates constitutionalism and stresses that all values arise from the
state against which individual has no rights.
Religious Fundamentalism
• It is associated with inflexibility, dogmatism, authoritarianism or worst violence. It is
characterized by a rejection of the distinction between politics and religion
• Greek word “Fundamental” which means base
Feminism
• Femina meaning women or female
• It is concerned with the attainment of gender equality in the political, economic and
social spheres of life. Its primary focus is the position of woman in the society
Environmentalism
• It is an ideology focusing on the idea that environment is endangered and must be
preserved through regulation and lifestyle changes.
• Its concern is about the natural environment and particularly about reducing
environment degradation that is more of a policy orientation rather an ideological
stance

• It is the ability to get someone to do something he/she wants to accomplish, thus making
things happen in the way he/she wants.

organization.
Information Power
The leader has the access and control of information. This could be granted to specialists and
managers in the middle of the information system. The people may protect information in order to
increase the power
Representative power, The legal right conferred to speak by the firm as a representative of a
potentially significant group composed of individuals from departments or outside the firm. Helps
complex organization deal with a variety of constituencies

Rational persuasion- The ability to control person’s behavior by convincing the other person of a

Referent power- The ability to control another behavior because the person wants to identify with the
power source. Can be enhanced by linking to morality and ethics and long term vision

Social Control
TYPES OF AUTHORITY
• CHARISMATIC AUTHORITY
– It is a leadership based on established law. People obey the leader or executive because
they accept his or her power under law.
• TRADITIONAL AUTHORITY
– The leadership is based from the culture that is people often give allegiance to the one
who occupy the instructional position
• COERCIVE AUTHORITY
– The power to use force such as police or military force to demand obedience form
subordinate
