Teacher Intern Mentor Date

Marjorie E. Angus 9:50-11:30 am

Teacher Intern Time

I. Intended Learning Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to;
a. Enumerate techniques in separating mixtures such as decantation, evaporation,
filtration
b. Describe the different processes involved in decantation, evaporation, filtration
c. Determine the appropriate separation techniques for the given mixtures

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Separating Mixtures
Competency: Enumerate techniques in separating mixtures such as decantation,
evaporation, filtration

❖ Science and You. Alumaga, M., et al. pp.
Process Skills: Observing, Describing, Differentiating
Concept: Techniques of separating mixtures is the process in which the components of
a mixture are separated.

III. Procedure

A.
1. Engage
● REVIEW
○ Let the students give examples of Homogeneous and
Heterogeneous mixtures
● Jumbled Letters
1. SPAARENITG - SEPARATING
2. THCEUNEIQS - TECHNIQUES
3. MTERUIXS - MIXTURES
4. CPNONOMETS - COMPONENTS

2. Explore (Objective B)
See attached file (Activity Sheet)

3. Explain (Objective A)

Decantation
The process of separating the components of a mixture by pouring the liquid
component from one container to another, without disturbing the lower layer of
sediments in a mixture. It is also used to separate solids from liquids.

Evaporation
Technique used to separate out homogenous mixtures where there is one or
more dissolved solids. This method drives off the liquid components from the
solid components. The process typically involves heating the mixture until no
more liquid remains.

Filtration
The process of separating solid and liquid substances by using a porous filter,
such as a strainer and cloth that allows the liquid to pass through.

4. Elaborate

● What are the techniques of separating mixtures?

○ Evaporation
○ Decantation
○ Filtration
● What is decantation?
○ The technique of separating mixtures that are heterogeneous like
oil and water and sand and water.
● What is evaporation?
○ The technique of separating homogeneous mixtures like salt and
water
● What is filtration?
○ The technique of separating mixture through a porous filter like
paper filter or strainer that only liquid components can pass
through.
5. Evaluate (Objective C)

Directions: Determine the appropriate separation technique for the following mixture
below.

Mixture Techniques of Separation

Oil & Vinegar

Coffee powder & Water

Sand & water

Salt & Water

Oil & Soy Sauce

Tea & Water

Grated Coconut & Water

Water & Stone

Cereal & Milk

Gasoline & Water

IV. Assignment

Read in your Science and You book about separating mixtures.

MIX AND SEPARATE

Name:________________________________________ Date:____________
Grade & Section:__________________

I. Objective
❖ Describe the different processes involved in decantation, evaporation and
filtration

II. Materials
● 4 Transparent plastic cups
● 1 black pen marker
● Water (placed in a small plastic container - Mineral water)
● 3 tablespoons of Cooking Oil
● ¼ plastic cup of Sand/Soil
● 1 piece of plastic Funnel
● Coffee Filter/Paper towel/Cloth Napkin (either of the three)
III. Procedure
Direction: Do the different tasks below by following the directions.

TASK 1
Watch this video about the separation of salt and water mixture
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtqlB1fttcs

TASK 2

1. Prepare 4 transparent plastic cups

2. Label each transparent plastic cups (Cup A, Cup B, Cup C, and Cup D)
3. Fill in the Cup A with half a cup of water
4. Then, add three tablespoons of cooking oil in Cup A.
5. Observe what happens to the mixture.
6. Slowly pour some amount of the mixture to Cup B
7. Set aside these two cups

Task 3

1. Get the Cup C and fill in with ½ cup of water

2. Add ¼ cup of sand/soil
3. Observe the mixture once the substances settle.
4. Get the Cup D and put the plastic funnel on the opening then at the same time
cover it with a coffee filter/paper towel/cloth napkin
5. Slowly pour the water from Cup C into the Cup D
6. Observe the water when it passes through the plastic funnel.

IV. Guide Questions

Directions: Answer the following questions and type your answer in the space
provided.
