TOPIC: ORNAMENTAL GARDENING

What is Ornamental Gardening?

Ornamental gardening can be simply defined as planting various plants on a


piece of ground from and for an artistic point of view. This entails designing such
a garden to follow given patterns for a general pleasurable look. An ornamental
garden, therefore, is one that is planted purely for aesthetic value.

Our country is basically an agricultural one. It is rich in land, water, and other
resources. Many Filipinos are engaged in agricultural activities like farming,
gardening, livestock and poultry raising, fish culture, and others.

Gardening as one livelihood activities includes raising trees and fruit trees,
ornamental plants, medicinal and herbal plants, fruits, vegetables, and other
crops.

Importance of Ornamental Gardening

1. It can be a livelihood and an occupation in itself.


2. It is an interesting and enjoyable activity.
3. It can be a therapeutic activity.
4. It encourages creativity and productivity.
5. It keeps the body active, healthy, and productive.
6. It beautifies the surrounding.

Kinds of Ornamental Gardening
1. Container Garden- These are ornamental plants grown in containers like
earthenware dishes, clay pots, rubber or plastic boxes, and recyclable
cans.
2. Formal Flower Garden- This consists of flowerbeds laid out in balanced and
regular arrangements.
3. Informal Flower Garden- It consists of beds of flowers arranged in a casual
and irregular manner.
4. Rock Garden- This garden is a combination of rocks and plants arranged
to create a theme or a scenario. This is popular in the type of garden in
front of houses, commercial buildings, resorts, hotels condominiums, and
the like.
5. Water Garden- This is a man-made pond, in which plants that live in water
are grown. Some have a natural body of water garden on their property
and they use it to create a water garden.
6. Wild Flower Garden- This type is made up of native wildflowers which can
be inexpensive and easy to grow.
