TOPIC: POPULAR HOUSEHOLD ORNAMENTAL PLANTS

Ornamental plants, referred to as garden plants have beauty as their main trait.
They are usually grown in the flower garden for the display of their flowers. It is
plant-primarily grown for its beauty either for screening, accent, specimen, color,
or aesthetic reasons. Common ornamental features include leaves, scent, fruit,
stem, and bark.

Popular Household Ornamental Plants

1. Carnation

Carnation or Dianthus Caryophyllus is a flower popular for


boutonniéres. Each carnation has a cluster of flowers,
which are pink and green, and have been cultivated since
the time of ancient Greece.

2. Gumamela

Gumamela or Hibiscus is any of various herbs, shrubs, and


trees of the mallow family having large showy flowers. A
single bloom can be over 6 inches wide.

3. Chrysanthemum

Chrysanthemum or Chrysanthemum Morifolium is one of the


most popular fall garden flowers. Most mum plants are easy to
grow with their basic needs being full sun, rich soil, good
drainage, and good air circulation.
4. Mayana

Mayana or Coleus blumei Benth is a tropical plant of the mint


family. This grows to a height of 3 feet and is cultivated as a
house plant.

5. Geranium

Geranium or Genus Pelargonium is a perennial plant and


some are cultivated as house plants especially the popular
pot and budding plants. Common geraniums have white,
salmon pink, or red flowers.

6. Sampaguita

Sampaguita or Jasminum Sambac vines or shrubs with


yellow or white star-shaped flowers are noted for their fine
scent. It is found throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa.

7. Begonia

Begonia or Semperflorens-cultorum are mostly succulent


herbs native to tropical regions. They are cultivated in
houses and gardens for their variety of colors.
