MANGO TREE
Mangifera indica Linn.
Manga is a large tree, with a dense and spreading crown. This is a widely cultivated tree
for its fruit, with several varieties in cultivation. The most popular are "carabao" and
"piko," and the former used to be the preferred export variety. The Guimaras mango is
now considered the sweetest of mango varieties produced in the Philippines.
LANSONES
Lansium parasiticum (Osbeck) K.C.Sahni & Bennet

Lansones is a tree growing to a height of 4 to 15 meters. Leaves are alternate, 20 to 40


centimeters long, with 5 to 7 leaflets, oblong to oblong-elliptic, 7 to 18 centimeters in
length, and pointed at both ends. Fruit is yellowish-white, occurring in bunches on a
single stem, ellipsoid or globose, 2 to 4 centimeters long, with bitter seeds that are
surrounded by a translucent pulp
Avocado Tree
Persea americana Mill.

Abukado is a medium-sized tree reaching a height of up to 10 to 15 meters. Fruit


is large, fleshy, elongated, of various sizes and shapes, often resembling a pear, 8
to 18 centimeters long, some weighing as much as two kilos, soft and edible, with
a nutty flavor, color varying from yellow-green to purple.
Chico
Achras zapota Linn.

Chico is a much-branched tree growing to a height of 8 meters. Leaves are oblong to


narrowly oblong-obovate, 8 to 13 centimeters in length, pointed at both ends. Fruit is
brown, fleshy, ovoid to round, 3 to 8 centimeters long, containing 5 or more shiny
blackish-brown seeds. Fleshy is brown, soft, slightly gritty, sweet, and very agreeable in
flavor.
Saging
Musa x paradisiaca L.

The banana plant is the largest herbaceous flowering plant. Each pseudostem produces a
single inflorescence, the banana heart, containing many bracts between rows of flowers.
The banana fruits develop from the heart, in a hanging cluster made up of tiers (hands),
up to 20 fruit to a tier. Cultivated throughout the Philippines in many varieties.
Sampalok
Tamarindus indica Linn.
TAMARIND

Sampalok is a large tree 12 to 25 meters high, nearly glabrous. Fruits are pods oblong,
thickened, 6 to 15 centimeters long, 2 to 3 centimeters wide, slightly compressed, the
exocarp thin and crustaceous, the mesocarp pulpy acid and edible. Planted throughout the
settled areas of the Philippines.
DURYAN
Durio zibethinus Murr.

Durian is a tree that grows to a height of 20 meters or more. Fruit is globular, very
large, 15 to 25 centimeters long, covered by a hard shell with stiff, sharp spines,
weighing as much as 3 kilos or more. Shell breaks into five parts to which the
flesh adhere.
GUYABANO
Annona muricata L.
SOURSOP

Guyabano is a small tree, usually less than 7 meters high. Fruit is ovoid and large,
up to 18 centimeters long, covered with small scattered, soft spinelike processes.
KAMATSILE
Pithecellobium dulce (Roxb.) Benth.
SWEET TAMARIND

Kamatsile is a tree 5 to 18 meters high, with pendulous branches, with short,


sharp stipular spines. The leaves are evenly 2-pinnate, 4 to 8 centimeters long.
Seeds are 6 to 8, with an edible, whitish, pulpy aril. The arillus is sweet when the
fruit is ripe.
Langka
Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.
JACKFRUIT

Langka is a smooth tree reaching a height of 8 to 15 meters. Fruit is green to greenish-


yellow when ripe, fleshy, hanging on short stalks from the main stem or from large
branches in old trees, oblong with pyramidal projections, 25 to 60 centimeters long.
NIYOG (COCONUT TREE)
Cocos nucifera Linn.

Coconut is an unarmed, erect, tall palm reaching a height of 25 meters. Fruit is


variable in size, shape and color, obovoid to subglobose, often obscurely 3-
angled, 15 to 25 centimeters long.
PAPAYA
Carica papaya Linn.

Papaya is a small, erect, usually unbranched, fast-growing tree growing 3 to 6


meters high. Fruit is indehiscent, subglobose, obovoid or oblong-cylindric, 5 to 30
centimeters long, fleshy and yellowish or yellow-orange when ripe, containing
numerous black seeds which are embedded in the sweet pulp.
MAKOPA
Syzygium samarangense (Blume) Merr. & L,M.Perry

Makopa is a tropical tree growing up to 12 meters tall, with a relatively short and
wide trunk. Fruit is a bell- or pear-shaped edible berry, occurring in a wide range
of colors, white, pale green, green, red, purple, crimson, and even black. When
ripe, fruit pulls outwards, with a slight concavity in the middle of the underside of
the "bell."
