NEW DELHI: It won’t take much to change your standard bulbs as compact
fluorescent lights (CFLs) and light emitting diode (LED) bulbs are emerging as
cost-effective replacements.

Even as incandescent light bulbs cost less, both CFLs and LEDs save more
energy, have a longer life and come in all sizes and shapes, thus providing new-
age enlightenment.

While CFLs are a good short-term solution and slash energy costs by as much
as 80%, LED bulbs are a long-term solution using 20 to 50 times less energy
than incandescent bulbs and may last for over 12 years (assuming 12 hours of
usage every day). On the other hand a 100-watt incandescent bulb costs Rs 8-
10 and burns for about 800 hours and comes without any guarantee.

A 20-watt CFL generates the same amount of light, costs Rs 120, working for
about 6,000 hours and comes with at least a year’s guarantee. An LED light
source with the same light intensity lasts up to 50,000 hours and can cost over
Rs 3,000.

LED bulbs use 20 to 50 times less energy than incandescent bulbs and may
last for over 12 years. LED-based technology is currently in use in niche areas
like industrial lighting, in hospitals, inside television sets, mobile phones,
digital clocks, watches, car dashboards. Recently, it was introduced to desk
lamps and art galleries as well.

Despite being the best energy solution, LEDs’ cost is currently dissuading
buyers and, therefore, will take a while to penetrate the market.

LED will truly turn on the lights and, according to experts, will one day
dethrone LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) monitors and CFL lights. LED lights are
eco-friendly and do not contain mercury with its high lumens per watt (170
lumens/watt) resulting in lesser use of electricity leading to reduced emission
of carbon. Conversely, CFLs contain mercury and need safe disposal when they
break.

The market for companies like Philips and Havells is set to grow with greater
efficiencies that are expected to creep in ‘within a few years.’ But for the
moment, it is really CFLs that rule the roost in providing cost efficiency.
Industry estimates indicate that about 200 million CFLs are sold in India every
year, much below the 900 million tungsten bulbs that are sold. This could
change soon as more and more people realize the benefits of a CFL.

“The LED market is very nascent in India and most players import LEDs from
US, China and Japan, assemble them and sell for specialized applications,”
avers Sunil Sikka, president, Havells. This does not make them ideally good
buys for domestic and office use. So for now, lighting solutions providers are
betting on CFLs.

Philips, which gets 30% of its revenues from its lighting business globally,
claims market leadership in CFLs in India and is also promoting LEDs at its
lighting zones set up across India. “LEDs will take some time to reach homes,”
concedes Rajeev Chopra, country manager, Lighting, Philips.

But industry players want the government to promote CFLs and LEDs. Sikka of
Havells says, “The European Union plans to ban conventional bulbs by 2012.
Several other countries are also following suit. It’s time India also had proper
guidelines.”

Though if you really want to make a difference to your wallet switch to CFLs
now and keep an eye on LED prices - they are getting cheaper even as
technology gets better. Whichever option one may opt for the guiding mantra
will be: Let there be greener light.

India led market is on the upswing these days. The led have become a major
drive of the India electronics industry. There was once a time when the led
were used only as singular items, as little glow bulbs or for use in rope lights,
but now the led are being used in many electronic items. The electronic
accessories now a day’s use a lot of led in various ways. The India led usage as
a whole has increased significantly in the past few years.

Led usage in mobile phones is one sector which is consuming more led than
ever. More and more led are being used these days in mobile phones. The India
led market for mobile phones has risen considerably in the past few years, and
it has become the most important segment of the loose led. With the increase
in mobile phones the amount of India led usage has also risen considerably.

India led usage in the electronics industry as signal led has also grown. Along
with the FND, and the general LCD, the loose led are being constantly used to
signal the monitoring of a many devices. They usually show the power on off,
and other such indications. More led in India are being used for led displays,
glow signs, led lights, led lamps, ropes, etc. The signage industry in India,
which is growing quite rapidly, has been using a lot of led in the past few years.
With the increase in the number of outdoor advertising the signage led
industry in India is also getting a major boost.

The coming of the led tv India is also one factor which must be seen with great
interest. The led tv India is presently being only manufactured and marketed
by one or two multinational companies, but sooner than later more companies
are going to come out with led tv India products. The lcd tv fitted with led is the
major growth symbol of the tv industry of the future. The common CRT tv that
we use today will vanish and it will be replaced by the led lcd tv in the near
future.

Then the coming of the led lights, which soon will replace the conventional
bulbs throughout the world, is also an encouraging sign. The heat given out by
the led is marginal in comparison to bulbs, both incandescent, and fluorescent,
and thus their energy losses are minimum. Moreover, the led lights consume
so less electricity, and this saves a lot of energy. Also their life is many ties
more than the life of conventional sources of light. Now with the coming of the
power led, the dream of a fully lit led light, lighting our home in not far. Also
the led streetlights are being deployed at many places as pilot products. Such
streetlights are solar powered, and they server remote areas best.

The India led usage as a whole is going to keep trends with the world usage. It
is growing at a rapid rate, and the loose India led market will keep on
surpassing the market for bundled pieces. India led market has a great future
in years to come.
