Reading: A NICE PRESENT FOR GRANDMA
Jeff was nineteen when he got his first job. He was a bricklayer. He built
houses. Every month, he put £50 into his bank account. Soon, he had a lot
of money. Jeff had a nice old grandma and he loved her
very much. She made delicious cakes, pies and stews. He
loved to visit her! He usually visited her every week. He
rang her up every day. Five months after he started work,
it was his grandma’s birthday. He wanted to buy her a
special present. He wanted to buy maybe a puppy or a kitten
for her. She lived by herself. A pet is good company! He
went to the pet shop. He looked at all the animals.
Suddenly, he heard some talking. ‘Hello, how are you?’
He looked around, but he did not see anybody. ‘Hey, you!
I am up here!’ Jeff looked up and he saw a parrot. It
was red and blue and it talked and talked and talked.
Jeff loved it, but it was expensive. It was an interesting
pet, a good companion for grandma. He bought it. It took all of his
savings! The pet shop owner delivered the parrot to Jeff’s grandma that
day. The next day, Jeff rang her. He asked if she liked the parrot. ‘Yes,’
she replied. ‘I loved it. It was very tasty. I ate it with chips and peas.’

Who is she – this lady Jocasta?
Jocasta Watson-Hardy-Osborne was born on February 29th 1859. Her father, a doctor, was
away at the time. At school, she learned about Information Technology (computer studies),
Aviation (all about flying) and Space Travel. When she was eighteen,
she got a job in the British Royal Navy. She captained her first ship
‘The Buccaneer’ when she was nineteen. She sailed the ship all over
planet Earth. After two years, she was bored and so she left the
Navy. She decided to be an explorer. Space Travel interested
Jocasta and so she joined NASA. She piloted her first rocket ‘The
Chula’ in 2283. The first stop was Mars, but Jocasta didn’t like it.
She said it was cold and boring. Soon after, she went on an
intergalactic tour. She visited some amazing planets and saw some incredible things. She is
currently living in the year 2021, on Earth. She is a teacher at the Pentallian Institute, which
is actually the intergalactic code name for YOUR place of learning! You might
know her! She never uses her real name. Her father is off fighting Daleks, as
he does from time to time. He will return for her soon and they will be off
travelling again. Into the past, or into the future? WHO knows?
Jocasta certainly has an exciting life! By the way, her name is too long! Her
friends call her Jo Who. Do you know who her famous father is?
