INTRODUCTION
Baptism is a picture of our new life, soaked in the image of Jesus, transformed in
obedience to God. It is a picture of our death to sin, just as Jesus died for our sins. It is a
picture of a burial of our old way of life, just as Jesus was buried. It is a picture of a rebirth
to a new life in Christ, just as Jesus was resurrected and lives today. Baptism signifies
cleansing of our sins but Jesus undergone baptism, so does it mean he is a sinner? Why
Jesus needs to be baptized? In this lesson will lead us to understand the event of Baptism
of Jesus.
Christian Message:
Doctrine– Jesus began his public ministry by being baptized by John the Baptist.
Matthew’s account relates the occurrence of three phenomena: the heavens were opened,
the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and a voice from heaven proclaiming: “This is
my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.” (Mt. 3:13-17)
The baptism of Jesus revealed both who he was and what his mission was. It showed
that Jesus was called to accomplish his Father’s saving work through the power of the
Spirit with which he was anointed.

Moral – Baptism is not just a simple event that makes an individual person Christian
after the celebration of the baptismal rite. It is rather the beginning of the lifelong
journey of a continuous struggle to profess and safeguard one’s faith in the Triune God
and to be faithful to our baptismal vows and promises. Jesus’s submission to John’s
baptism signifies His humanity. He submits to the rite of baptism in obedience to His
Father’s will out of love. As baptized Christians, we are challenged to show obedience as
Jesus manifested in His baptism.

Worship –Renewal of baptismal vows

the Gospel of Matthew
3:13-17

THE BAPTISM OF JESUS

 Verse 13...
In this verse emphasized the connection of Jesus’ relationship with John the Baptist.
And showed the main role of John the Baptist as a prophet is to prepare the way for Jesus.
 Verse 14…
This verse, John acknowledged to the dignity and superiority of Jesus over him. That’s
why John refused to baptize Jesus and protested that he must be the one to be baptized by
Jesus.
John was reluctant to do so for the following reasons:
 baptism is for the forgiveness of sin, yet Jesus is God’s son and therefore
sinless
 Jesus is the greater person John has been telling people about, so John does
not feel worthy to baptize him
 Verse 15…
This implied that was not what John desired but what God willed and demanded.
There was something bigger than the question of greatness and superiority.
 When the baptism was done, three phenomena happened:
1. Verse 16…”The heavens were opened”,
2. Verse 16… “The Spirit of God descending like a dove and rested upon Jesus.”
3. Verse 17… And a voice from heaven proclaiming:
“This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.”
 This confirms Jesus’ identity as the Son of God.
 This shows that Jesus is the sanctified MESSAIH-King and
the chosen Suffering Servant.

The Baptism of John is called the

Baptism of Repentance:
- Immersion and rising out of the water
as a symbolic of repentance and
conversion to new life.
The baptism of Jesus
 Revealed both who he was and what his mission was.
 To accomplish his Father’s saving work through the power of the Spirit with which
he was anointed.
 That here is God ready to be identified with sinful humanity.
 He was baptized not because he was a sinner but because he was the messiah
who is in full unity with sinful people.
 He is the suffering Saviour.
 The Church teaches that baptism not only lets us participate in Jesus’ victory over
sin and death, but calls us to our own personal holiness and apostolate (sharing
our faith). God also affirms that we are his very much loved sons and daughters.
 Beginning of his journey to the cross, at the same time our baptism is the
beginning or our journey as Children of God.

In the baptism of Jesus, he is the blessed Messiah-King who must suffer. He saves
the people by suffering with us and for us. “He was baptized to be one with the sinners and
to stand alongside and to transform them from within.” In this lesson we are encouraged to
reflect on Jesus baptism to repent and to be converted to throw away our evil deeds
because Jesus sacrificed himself for the sake of us people.
