BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Read the following background information before answering the questions.

The Giant Flag

The Giant Flag is a legacy project of vast proportions, a celebration of the spirit of
South Africa, her land and her people. We are building a flag made up of millions of
coloured desert plants, like cacti and succulents, and a four-megawatt solar field on a
tract of land that was previously completely barren. It will be effectively viewable from
space and the size of 66 soccer fields. The Giant Flag will not only claim its place as a
natural wonder, but also as a new model of economic stimulus for previously
disadvantaged communities. Job creation, clean energy and tourism come together in
a world first green innovation project. The Giant Flag will not only have a positive
impact on hundreds of lives but also on the planet. The more the Flag grows the more
carbon we reduce!

This will all happen in the Valley of Desolation in the Camdeboo district in the Eastern
Cape near Graaff-Reinet. The word Camdeboo is derived from the Khoi word meaning
‘green pool’ or ‘green hippo pool’.

SECTION A: LONG FUNCTIONAL WRITING

THIS QUESTION IS COMPULSORY. (You have to answer this question.)

QUESTION 1: LETTER OF ENQUIRY

You are a member of the SRC at the Table Mountain FET College in Cape Town. You
saw the programme GREEN on TV on 23 August 2016. It was a very short programme
about The Giant Flag. Then you read the background information. You and the other
members of the SRC are very interested in this project and you decided to write a letter
of enquiry on behalf of the SRC to Sandy Cloete, the Public Relations Officer of The
Giant Flag Project.

The address of The Giant Flag is:

18 Church Street
GRAAFF-REINET
6280

Use the following points to structure your letter:

 Ask her how this project will benefit the communities of nearby towns.
 Do they think that the project would be sustainable?
 What is her opinion on how this project will affect tourism in this region?
 Why is this project called a ‘green’ project?
 Why did they choose this specific region?
 What do they mean with the term ‘clean energy’?
 Ask what you as students can do to help.

Make sure that you write in logical paragraphs and that you have an introduction, body
and conclusion.

The address and contact details of Table Mountain FET College is:

Address: PO Box 5532, Cape Town 8001

Telephone: 021 547 7600
Fax number: 021 547 3000
e-mail: tablemountain@college.com

Your letter should be approximately 150 words. Use the template for a formal letter
(ADDENDUM A) to help you. The following rubric will be used to mark your letter.

SECTION B: SHORT FUNCTIONAL WRITING

THIS QUESTION IS COMPULSORY. (You have to answer this question.)

QUESTION 2: E-MAIL

Use ADDENDUM B to compose an e-mail from Peter Solms (SRC Chairperson of

Table Mountain FET College) to Ms Sandy Cloete, the leader of The Giant Flag
project.

The students wanted to contribute to The Giant Flag project. The SRC organised a
function to raise money for the project and an amount of R15 500 was collected. They
want to ‘adopt’ some of the plants in the red section of the flag since that is the main
colour in the logo of the college.

Write the e-mail from Peter Solms to Ms Sandy Cloete regarding:

 Why the fundraiser was held
 How much money was raised
 Tell her in which section of the flag the ‘adopted’ plants need to be and why
 Ask her how many plants can be ‘adopted’
 Tell her that the college is ready to deposit the money into their bank account.
The banking details are needed for that.

Thank her for their work and say how it inspired the students. Express some goodwill.

Sandy Cloete’s e-mail address is: s.cloete.giantflag@mweb.co.za

Send a copy to Mr Radebe, the Campus Manager at Table Mountain FET College, at

SECTION C: VISUAL

This section has two questions. Only answer ONE question, either QUESTION 3 OR
QUESTION 4.

QUESTION 3: MIND MAP

Read the passage below and then create a mind map about the ADVANTAGES OF THE GIANT
FLAG PROJECT.

Take note of the following instructions:

 You should have ONE central idea and any 4 relevant facts.
 Use your own words as far as possible.
 Your mind map must be neatly presented.
 Use an A4 page to show your map.
 Your mind map will be assessed according to the rubric below.

THE ADVANTAGES OF THE GIANT FLAG PROJECT

The millions of succulents and cacti in the Giant Flag will bring back rich and diverse plant life to
this currently barren area. Plus, the 4 megawatt solar field will have the ability to provide power
to more than 4000 homes.

People can become part of this project by ‘adopting’ a plant or a part of the solar panel and
paying for it. Thus the whole country can have an interest in this project. Permanent jobs will be
created for people to look after the whole project, especially the plants, as well as developing a
conference centre where people can be educated about this ‘green’ project. There is the
possibility for entrepreneurs to create something new, based on the growing flag.

Flag project. It will be a fun day with lots of games, live music and competitions.

They plan to have this function on Thursday, 22 September 2016, at 15:00 in the Main Hall of
the college. Peter’s cell phone number is 083 555 8575.

GRAMMAR / STYLE: 10
Refer to the rubric. The mark awarded for grammar / language must be in proportion to
the content mark. Markers must indicate all errors.

FORMAT: 6
Indicated with X (negative marking: -½ mark per formatting error, also if lines are not
left open). Please note that the X merely indicates which parts of the letter are
regarded as format. EVERY mistake in those parts must be penalised, e.g. in the
receiver’s address there are 6 lines and potentially a student may make a mistake in
every line. It will then be -½ x 6 in the receiver’s address alone. Only use negative
marking up to a maximum of 12 mistakes, which will give the student 0 for format.
Also remember that a spelling mistake in parts of the format, e.g. ‘sincerely’, counts
under Grammar/style. It is not a format error.

2
The content of the letter does not have to follow the sequence as given below.
Acknowledge the student’s creativity.
