BACKGROUND INFORMATION
This will all happen in the Valley of Desolation in the Camdeboo district in the Eastern

You are a member of the SRC at the Table Mountain FET College in Cape Town. You
saw the programme GREEN on TV on 23 August 2016. It was a very short programme
about The Giant Flag. Then you read the background information. You and the other
members of the SRC are very interested in this project and you decided to write a letter
of enquiry on behalf of the SRC to Sandy Cloete, the Public Relations Officer of The
Giant Flag Project.
18 Church Street
GRAAFF-REINET

Ask her how this project will benefit the communities of nearby towns.
Do they think that the project would be sustainable?
What is her opinion on how this project will affect tourism in this region?
Why is this project called a ‘green’ project?
Why did they choose this specific region?
What do they mean with the term ‘clean energy’?
Ask what you as students can do to help.
Make sure that you write in logical paragraphs and that you have an introduction, body
and conclusion.
The address and contact details of Table Mountain FET College is:
Your letter should be approximately 150 words. Use the template for a formal letter

QUESTION 2: E-MAIL
The students wanted to contribute to The Giant Flag project. The SRC organised a
function to raise money for the project and an amount of R15 500 was collected. They
want to ‘adopt’ some of the plants in the red section of the flag since that is the main
colour in the logo of the college.
Thank her for their work and say how it inspired the students. Express some goodwill.

SECTION C: VISUAL
This section has two questions. Only answer ONE question, either QUESTION 3 OR
QUESTION 4.
Read the passage below and then create a mind map about the ADVANTAGES OF THE GIANT
FLAG PROJECT.
You should have ONE central idea and any 4 relevant facts.
Use your own words as far as possible.
Your mind map must be neatly presented.
Use an A4 page to show your map.
Your mind map will be assessed according to the rubric below.
People can become part of this project by ‘adopting’ a plant or a part of the solar panel and
paying for it. Thus the whole country can have an interest in this project. Permanent jobs will be
created for people to look after the whole project, especially the plants, as well as developing a
conference centre where people can be educated about this ‘green’ project. There is the
possibility for entrepreneurs to create something new, based on the growing flag.

SECTION A: LONG FUNCTIONAL WRITING
CONTENT: 14
Indicated with (full mark)
GRAMMAR / STYLE: 10
Refer to the rubric. The mark awarded for grammar / language must be in proportion to
the content mark. Markers must indicate all errors.
FORMAT: 6
Indicated with X (negative marking: -½ mark per formatting error, also if lines are not
left open). Please note that the X merely indicates which parts of the letter are
regarded as format. EVERY mistake in those parts must be penalised, e.g. in the
receiver’s address there are 6 lines and potentially a student may make a mistake in
every line. It will then be -½ x 6 in the receiver’s address alone. Only use negative
marking up to a maximum of 12 mistakes, which will give the student 0 for format.
Also remember that a spelling mistake in parts of the format, e.g. ‘sincerely’, counts
under Grammar/style. It is not a format error.
2
The content of the letter does not have to follow the sequence as given below.
Acknowledge the student’s creativity.
X Ms Sandy Cloete (If the name and position are switched, only -½)

INTRODUCTION (3 marks)
We are students at the Table Mountain FET College in Cape Town and members of

you think this project would be sustainable and that the project will bring more
tourists to that region? We would like to know why you call it a ‘green’ project?
Why did you choose this specific region? What is the meaning of the term ‘clean
energy’? Lastly, our students are eager to get involved. How can we get involved in
this project?
CONCLUSION (3 marks)
We are all very excited about this initiative and want to congratulate you. We need
positive innovations like this in our country. We look forward to hear from you soon.
Thank you very much.
