Psy 701: Research Methods

July 3, 2021 9AM-12:44NN

Introduce yourself.
We did this for everyone. It took us around an hour and 45 minutes.
State your (1) name, (2) academic and work background, (3) research
experience and interests, (4) story about your name.

Processing.
Can you give a profile of the class in terms of academic background?

>> many people would say that research is difficult. But look! You’re doing
it now.
>> there’s a lot of research that you can do. You are doing 50% of the
research. It’s just that research is more than just recall. We enter research
with a perspective.

You would have come up with a device to help you document and analyze. How
else would you have made your tool?

Explore first... so that your life would be easier (as you gather data
proper?)
Conduct pretest or pilot?

What would have been your objective if you looked at the origins of the names
of your classmates? What is the significance?

>> you want to know the origins of people’s names. . . maybe genealogy?
>> you do your tool/table and your data gathering because you want to achieve
something

Basic Research vs. Applied Research

Basic research
 For research’s sake. To establish research. Don’t know when the data
will be useful.

Each encounter or activity where you are receiving information is potentially

a research activity.

What makes a “researcher” a “researcher”?

Researcher puts on a researcher’s hat. May plans, may question, may strategy.
More structured in research.

Hawthorne effect
I think we got to this one because we were already discussing how classmates
might “fake good” in background question (i.e. work, academics) if they were
informed beforehand that their information will be collected for research
purposes.
We also talked about consent and candidness of the conversation. Don’t forget
to debrief and given them an option to withdraw their information from being
a part of the study (opt-out).

We also mentioned the data privacy act. It prohibits the gathering of

information that could potentially link to you.

Think! Is there a way link the data to you?

Is it possible to gather data without consent?

Dapat hindi traceable to the person…

Ideally we need to have informed consent. Minsan lang we think of

“candidness”. Just be sure to debrief and to have opt out.

You can create a research team too. So that each person can focus on
something.

Mean, median, mode.

Do you still remember these?

What’s your takeaway from the discussion? What did you like?
(A/N: Research is intuitive… structured learning experience..)

You have to level up. You have to have mindset of a researcher. May plan, may
objective. Tools, methodology, etc.

That’s what makes you master’s level!

Pero why… Puro memorize? Yes. How can you love someone if you don’t know
their names, right? Kailangan niyo muna mag memorize.

Be not afraid of research. Right process, right tools.

Hypothesis vs. hyperthesis

Hypo  below
Thesis  statement or belief that is backed up by data

You can say, “All masters students are intelligent.”

But do you have data? This is a hypothesis.

Hyperthesis  laws, paulit-ulit na siyang thesis

 God-like status
 Physics usually
 Universal laws

Assignment for next meeting.

This is an attempt to make research a living exercise. Maybe the reason why
we are not so fond of research because the topic does not interest us.

Do a small research about the topic: YOU. IKAW.

1. What was the Question you wanted to ask? (OBJECTIVE)

2. What was the method used to gather data?
3. What were the results?
4. What is your recommendation? Regarding your results...

Lightbulb moments.
Those Aha! Moments. A learning that I will not forget. Aim to have at least
three per session.

Bongga ka day.
