Helping the Homeless

This afternoon, our community came together to support
the animals and humans of the homeless encampment!
100+ lunches were made and served by Kalamazoo Mobile
Closet as well as clothing, shoes and hygiene products
distributed, Kalamazoo Humane Society provided
informational handouts about Parvo and delivered
donations, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety
checked in to make sure that everything was happening
peacefully and safely, Kalamazoo County Animal Services
& Enforcement stopped by to again offer their support and
assistance, SPCA of Southwest Michigan provided onsite
vaccines for approximately around 20 dogs and even one
cat, Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes provided food and we
provided cold water, human treat bags, Animal's Best
Friend Fund t-shirts, spay/neuter information and bleach
with spray bottles, our friends at Theo & Stacy's
Downtown provided ice which was a life saver in this heat!
Together, today was a success! We will continue to work
together to make sure all of the animals belonging to our
homeless friends receive vaccinations and spay/neuter
services.
One big need we found today is garbage bags! Please add
that to things to donate at our drop off locations at
Kalamazoo Humane Society, SPCA and Pet Supplies Plus -
Portage, MI .

Homeless and Parvo Update

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Kalamazoo County area animal organizations say they believe a
deadly parvovirus outbreak among dogs in a Kalamazoo homeless encampment site is
under control.

Kalamazoo County animal control officers reported three dogs died from the highly-
contagious virus at the encampment site by the Kalamazoo River.

"Pretty confident we're going to get ahead of this," said Katie Timber, executive director
of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Southwest Michigan.

Parovirus deaths: Three dogs died of canine parvovirus in Kalamazoo, officials fighting
outbreak
SPCA of Southwest Michigan and a Kalamazoo veterinarian visited homeless
encampment on Aug. 27 to test the pets for canine parvovirus.

Timber said vaccines were administered parvovirus vaccines to nearly 20 dogs at the
site, she said every dog tested negative.

Well. It’s officially been 1 whole year with this
CRAZY pup!
Bartok (formerly Basin), was brought here from
Georgia with littleJames
to no history.
Lopez We know what
he looks like- but I can tell you from experience
that this dog talks like a husky, has the attitude
of a chihuahua, jumps like a gazelle, has ears
like a bat, and the claws of a velociraptor.
Altogether, he’s our boy. We’re so happy to have
gotten him from the SPCA of Southwest
Michigan and so thankful to staff for all they do!

true Queen of the castle! It's been over 10 years since we adopted Icon from the
SPCA of sw mich. He has been part of our family, ever
since. He turned 14 earlier this year and still keeps
going. All the kids love him and we couldn't have done it
