Experiment - 1
1. Determine the strength and molarity of HCl by titrating it
against M/20 Na2CO3 solution.
Aim
To find out the strength and molarity of HCl by titrating it
against M/20 Na2CO3 solution.
Theory
1.Molarity of HCl is determined by titrating it against Na2CO3
solution using methyl orange as indicator.
2. Strength of HCl is determined by multiplying its molar mass
by its molarity.
(.05 molL-1 x 106 gmol-1 x 250 ml ) / 1000 mlL-1
= 1.325 g
Molecular equation
Na2CO3 + 2HCl → 2NaCl + CO2 + H2O
Ionic equation
CO32- + 2 H+ → H2O +CO2
Indicator – Methyl orange
End point – Yellow to light pink
Procedure
250 ml of standard solution of Na2CO3 is prepared by dissolving
1.325 g of Na2CO3 in water. Pipette out 20 ml of this solution
into the conical flask. Add a drop of methyl orange indicator
into it. Fill the burette with HCl. Run down the acid solution
from the burette to fall into the conical flask with constant
shaking till the endpoint is reached. Titration is repeated to get
concordant values.
Result
Molarity of HCl = ………….mol/L
Strength of HCl = ……..g/L
Observations and calculations
Volume of Na2CO3 solution taken for titration = 20 ml
Volume of HCl = ………ml
Molarity of HCl = …….mol/L

Number of moles of HCl / Number of moles of Na2CO3 =

( MHCl x VHCl) / (MNa2CO3 x V Na2CO3)
2/ 1 = (MHCl x …….ml ) / (.05 mol/L x 20 ml )
MHCl = ( 2 x .05 x 20 ) / ……………
Molarity of HCl =………………….mol /L
Strength of HCl = Molar mass of HCl x Molarity of HCl
= 36.5 g /mol x …………..mol/L
