वत् = तादात्म्य-अतिदेश extension of application of factors/characteristics, as though
पर = following
Eg. कु ण्डेन P/3/1 अटन्P/8/1 । “kundena”, which is noun, is treated as part of “atan”, in
terms of intonation. Therefore, sound “u” in “kundena” becomes udatta.

तत्र प्रथमा एव गार्ग्य-शब्दः । ★2।1।2 is applied only when noun is followed
by noun in vocative case (sound “e” has udatta by ★8।2।5).
पर-ग्रहणम् किम्?
देवदत्त P/8/1, कु ण्डेन P/3/1 अटन्P/8/1 । oh, Devadatta who is wondering
with bowl.
पूर्वं प्रति आमन्त्रितम् अतन्त्रम् । when noun is preceded by noun in vocative
case, it doesn't become part of preceding noun. ★2।1।2 has no role (★8।1।19
is applied).
अङ्ग-ग्रहणं किम्?
यथा “मृद्-पिण्डी-भूतः” स्वरं लभेत । उभयोः आदि-उदात्तत्वं मा भूत् । if
it is not considered as part, then 1st syllable of each word should get udatta. if
it is considered as part, just like in “a lump of clay”, only 1st syllable of noun
in vocative case should get udatta.
वत्-करणं किम्?
स्व-आश्रयम् अपि यथा स्यात् । “आं कु ण्डेन अटन्” । आम एकान्तरम्
आमन्त्रितम् अनन्तिके इति एकान्तरता भवति । as for all other rules with
respect to accent except ★2।1।2, they are 2 separate words. just like “am” in
“आं कु ण्डेन अटन्” doesn't obtain udatta by ★8|1|55 (when there is intervening
words between “am” and noun in vocative case, “am” doesn't get udatta). by
using word “as though”, intervention of 1 word (“kundena”) stands valid.

अवधि-निर्देशात् तु सति तत् ज्ञान-अर्थात् प्राक् ग्रहणम् आवर्तते । one more “prak (before)” is
repeated for sake of getting name “samasa (compound)” for all topics.
Why 2 names? Because ★1।4।1 says 1 topic which is taught between ★1।4।1

topics such as “avyayi-bhava” get name “samasa (compound)”, too.

पद-मञ्जरी । अव्ययस्य एव विभक्ति-आदयः विशेषणानि । indeclinable (which is in 1/1 in sutra) to
be 1st member of compound by ★1|2|43. Listed/indicated meanings of

2nd member, it becomes neuter.

For example, indeclinable “अधि”, in sense of 7th case, is compounded as 1st
member with another noun as 2nd member and become compound and is

status of “pratipadika (noun-base)” by ★1|2|46 and lose case-endings by ★2|

rules.

सादृश्यः अर्थे यथा सह समासः न भवति । “saha” in primary sense of “yatha”, which is
similarity/resemblance, doesn't form compound with another noun.
This is why Panini mentions separate sutra ★2|1|7, “yatha” in sense of
complete similarity/resemblance doesn't form compound.
Eg: यथा देवदत्तः तथा यज्ञदत्तः । Yajnadatta is resembling Devadatta
(Devadatta is resembled to Yajnadatta).
However, when there is equality only in some aspects, or equal or superior
quality which is secondary sense of “yatha”, compound is formed with
indeclinable “saha”.
Eg: हरिणा* सादृश्यम् इति सहरि । (he is) equal to Visnu.
*: “हरेः” is also valid, as “सदृश” governs 6th or 3rd case.
Note difference between:
o “सह” in sense of “यथा” = similarity/equality (compared to superior
person, etc.)
and
o “सह” in sense of “सादृश्य” = similarity/resemblance (compared to
inferior animal, etc., usually in terms of particular quality/conduct).

“sa” becomes substitute.
Eg: सचक्रम् । together with wheel.
Eg: सहपूर्वाह्णम् । simultaneously with beginning of forenoon. सहापराह्णम् ।
simultaneously with beginning of afternoon.
