Performance Art
“Art that refuses to settle” – Robert Rauschenburg. Performance art is said to have many forms.
Body as a means of expression since ancient times.
It may be an animated object that creates and shifts interactions between the artwork, space, and
the audience. As an image or document with a performative feature, it includes live-action or an
audience. It is a work of art that is not dependent on a medium, such as painting or sculpture.
As a consequence, it is a medium that artists use to pose concerns about how art communicates
with us and the broader social world. The body is used as a medium in performance art, as well
as physical activity. Hence, according to The Case for Performance Art, inserting live bodies in
artworks was an immediate way to unsettle the delusion that the universal perspective exists.
Insisting that everybody is self-inscribed by events, language, history, and identity and is always
in perpetual flux. Furthermore, the artist uses performance art to reach directly to its audiences
and make them uncomfortable in a matter of curiosity. An entity that is there to make sense of
our changing world and to conclude us into art’s frame.

Moreover, performance arts differ from performing arts, in the way that performance art is taken
at museums and a big gallery, and performing arts is held at theater, musical, and ballet. Thus,
performance arts are the ones who is a live presentation of artists artworks it involves an element
of live-action and an audience. While performing arts are those dances, songs, opera, and other
forms that needed skills to elaborate the art that reflects human life.

A performance art which is “the artist is present” by Marina Abramovic at the museum of
modern art in New York has so much to unravel.
The artist and a stranger looking at each other for a minute of silence, which is practically
performance art. Inserting live bodies in artworks, and turn an audience into a performer.
This art wants to convey a message, of someone to oneself or others. Sitting there looking at
each other’s eyes may cross thinkings about the other person or another way around.
It is said that the story of the love affair of Ulay and the artist Marina that separated ways a long
time ago and they meet again at that very moment and the way their eyes met has so much
message and feelings that we can see even they are just staring at each other.
This artwork means time, space, love, and feelings.
