The Blade Building (Abbey Mill House), Uk: (Long Span Cellular Beam)
• Due to the unique split construction of the beam, it also have the ability to use an asymmetric design approach – whereby the top half of
the beam is lighter weight than the bottom half of the beam. This increases load capacity, while minimizing the weight of the beam.
• The steelwork tonnage savings were obtained due to the following reasons: –
o The cellular beam manufacturing process allows for the optimization of steel material due
to the fact that cellular holes are created within the webs
o The cellular beam manufacturing process allows for the optimization of steel material due
to the fact that universal beams (UBs) can be chosen for the top half of the beam section and
universal columns (UCs) can be chosen for the bottom half of the beam section
o The redesign was done at a very advanced stage of the project allowing for the employment
of accurate final loadings and bespoke designs
• The first floor was designed to hang off the second floor due to the
architectural requirement of an inset façade at the first floor level. The same
situation reoccurs at the 13th floor, which also thus performs the function of a
transfer floor. Steel frame
