INTRODUCTION
• Roughly translated- “the way of punching and kicking”
• The technique of unarmed combat for self-defense that involves
the skillful application of techniques that include punching,
jumping kicks, blocks, dodges, parrying actions with hands and
feet.
• Combines different styles of martial arts. (Tae Kwon, Kwonpup,
T’ang Su, Judo, Karate, Kung Fu)
• One of the only two Asian martial arts included in Olympic Games
WHAT IS THE NATURE AND
BACKGROUND OF TAEKWONDO?
• Taekwondo is considered as one of the most
organized and scientifically-based Korean martial arts
that not only trains competence in physical fighting
abilities but holistically as an individual. The
techniques in Taekwondo improve the individual’s
cardio respiratory and muscular strength, balance,
control, power, focus, and self-discipline
HISTORY
• Taekwondo is derived from the Korean words “ Tae” which means,
“foot or leg”; “Kwon” which means, “fist or fight”; and “Do” which
means “the way or discipline”
• Arises from Taekkyon, a traditional modern art
• 3 kingdoms: Goyuryeo, Silla, and Baekje
• After WWII, became standard military training in Korea.
POOMSAE
• POOMSAE also known as “hyung”, is a martial
arts forms and standards, comprising of basic
physical movement patterns and philosophies.
Poomsae is a series of basic attacking and
defending techniques in movement pattern and
executed with an imaginary opponent(s). The
techniques develop strength, breath control,
balance, power, focus, and self discipline.
