Air pollution is a type of environmental pollution that affects the air

and is usually caused by smoke or other harmful gases, mainly

oxides of carbon, sulphur and nitrogen.

Many of the world's large cities today have polluted air and
Kathmandu also tops the list.

Pollution can be gas, liquid or solid. But mainly, air pollution will be
discussed.

Air Quality Index of Kathmandu ranges between 100-200 and

sometimes overexceeds and main pollutant as PM2.5
AIR POLLUTION

KATHMAND AQI:-303.8 Introduction

U
Scientific

Principles

Involved :- -> Air pollution is measured by various

devices including various scientific
principles which are as follows:-
Optical particle counters detect particulate pollution by measuring the light
1 scattered by particles. Eg:- AirBeam

Electrochemical sensors are based on a chemical reaction between gases in the

2 air and the electrode in a liquid inside a sensor. Eg:-Aeroqual-Uses tungstic oxide

A photo ionization detector ionises volatile organic compounds and measures

3 the resulting electrical current.

Optical sensors detect gases like carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide by
4 measuring the absorption of infrared light.
OBJECTIVES:-
01 TO FIND THE AIR QUALITY OF

02 TO DETERMINE THE MAIN AIR

03 TO DETERMINE BETTER SOLUTIONS TO

CONTROL THE POLLUTION

04 TO FIND OUT THE CONSEQUENCES IF

NOT CONTROLLED IN TIME

informations
Methodology:-
1
We used Air Quality measuring device to find out the level of pollution in
Kathmandu valley.
2
With the help of the device, we found out that the main air pollutants which were
PM2.5
3
We researched the best possible way to reduce the air pollution individually as well as
in larger scale.
4
We also discussed about the harmful consequences of not controlling the air
pollution level of Kathmandu valley.

Kathmandu valley had the worst air quality a few

weeks back but it is reduced due to heavy rainfall .

It may not be hazardous but is harmful to our

health .
The main air pollutant found was PM 2.5 ( Particulate

Matter 2.5)
There are various air quality measuring devices that

use scientific principles to measure the quality level .

On 6 th May 2021, it has finally reduced to AQI 95
which is the moderate condition of air quality .
With the rise of air pollution due to various factors, there will be hazardous health
problems in the future and according to WHO, more people die of air pollution than
of smoking each year.

If electric vehicles are used which is currently being made by TESLA, it will help for
controlling pollution. On an individual level, if they plant these 3 plants
recommended by NASA, they would at least be able to breathe fresh air in their
home.

On a larger level, various awareness programme can be launched and the uses of
electric vehicles should be promoted.

If people individually started to implement some changes, many health problems

caused by air pollution can be reduced.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to G opal Jha Sir for his

valuable guidance and encouragement. We would also like to thank the

teachers of the physics department for providing us with the project, "To

study the air pollution level in Kathmandu valley" which helped us expand

our knowledge and learn a lot more about the topic at hand.

We would also like to thank our fellow group members for their

cooperation and moral support which has been crucial in the completion of

the project.
Thank You!
