Corona Virus (COVID 2019)

Objective
Virus causes mild disease in four out of five people infected: WHO
The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said Chinese medical data
shows that more than 80 percent of patients have mild symptoms and will
recover, while 14 percent suffer from severe complications such as pneumonia,
5 percent are in critical condition and 2 percent die from the disease.

"It appears that COVID-19 is not as deadly as other coronaviruses, including

SARS and MERS," Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters in Geneva,
adding that officials were starting to get a clearer picture of the outbreak. I'm

State Of Problem
Some of the coronavirus testing kits sent to state laboratories around the country have flaws and
do not work properly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Wednesday.
The kits were meant to enable states to conduct their own testing and have results faster than
they would by shipping samples to the C.D.C. in Atlanta. But the failure of the kits meant that
states that encountered problems with the test should not use it, and would still have to depend
on the C.D.C.’s central lab, which could cause several days’ delay in getting results.
“Obviously, a state wouldn’t want to be doing this test and using it to make clinical decisions if it
isn’t working as well, as perfectly, at the state as it is at C.D.C.,” Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director
of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said at a news conference on
Wednesday.

Defination of topic
Coronavirus
Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common
cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-
CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a
new strain that has not been previously identified in humans.

Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people.
Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and
MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in
animals that have not yet infected humans.

Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and
breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute
respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.

Standard recommendations to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering
mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs. Avoid close
contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing

Source Or Location
Meanwhile, South Korea on Saturday urged citizens to stay indoors as it
warned of a "critical moment" in its battle against the coronavirus after
recording the biggest daily jump in infections, with 813 new cases taking the
tally to 3,150 with 17 new deaths.
Seoul is grappling with the largest outbreak of the virus outside China, the
epicentre of the deadly disease. The National Health Commission reported on
Saturday at least 47 new deaths, bringing to 2,835 the number of fatalities
nationwide among 79,251 confirmed cases.

In Europe, Italy has reported more than 1,000 coronavirus cases and 29
deaths, the most in Europe.

On Friday, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that the spread of
the virus is "getting bigger". More than 85,000 people have been infected
worldwide.

Transition / Spreed (COVID 2019)

U.S. health officials confirmed the first possible community transmission of the
coronavirus in America, a troubling sign that the virus could be spreading in local
cities and towns.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention doesn't know exactly how the
California patient contracted the virus. The individual is a resident of Solano County
and is receiving medical care in Sacramento County. The patient didn't have a relevant
travel history or exposure to another patient with the virus, the CDC said Wednesday.

At this time, the patient's exposure is unknown," the CDC said in a statement. "It's
possible this could be an instance of community spread of COVID-19, which would
be the first time this has happened in the United States."

In a note to staff at UC Davis Medical Center, CEO David Lubarsky confirmed that
the CDC is investigating a patient at the center who may be the first to have
contracted the infection from community exposure.

The patient arrived at the facility on Feb. 19 after being transferred from another
hospital in Northern California, Lubarsky said in the note. He said the patient wasn't
immediately tested for the new coronavirus because the person didn't fit the existing
CDC criteria for the test, a protocol that UC Davis said it does not control.

The CDC ordered coronavirus testing on Sunday and confirmed Wednesday that the
patient tested positive, UC Davis said.

Frow Being Affected

-The virus can cause pneumonia. Those who have fallen ill are reported to suffer coughs, fever
and breathing difficulties. In severe cases there can be organ failure. As this is viral pneumonia,
antibiotics are of no use. The antiviral drugs we have against flu will not work. Recovery
depends on the strength of the immune system. Many of those who have died were already in
poor health.
