Abu Dharr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said,
“Whoever is suitable for you among your slaves, feed them from the same food you
eat and clothe them from the same clothes you wear. Whoever is not suitable for
you, sell them and do not torture the creation of Allah.”
Ibn Abbas reported: Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, passed by
some people one day who were eating while their servants were standing. Umar said,
“Why do I not see your servants eating with you? Do you not desire them?” A man
said, “No, by Allah, O leader of the faithful. Rather, we have preference over
them.” Umar became very angry, then he said, “What is the matter with people who
prefer themselves over their servants? Allah Almighty will deal with them and it is
done!” Then Umar said to the servants, “Sit down and eat.” The servants sat to eat
and the leader of the faithful did not eat.
Abu Qilabah reported: A man entered the home of Salman, may Allah be pleased with
him, while he was kneading dough. The man said, “What is this?” Salman said, “We
sent out the servant on an errand and we dislike for him to have two tasks at
once.”
Abdullah ibn Amr reported: Zanba Abi Rawh found his servant boy with a servant
girl, so he maimed his nose and castrated him. The Prophet, peace and blessings be
upon him, came and he said, “Who did this to you?” The boy said, “Zanba.” The
Prophet summoned him and he said, “What made you do this?” Zanba said, “He was
misbehaving in such a way.” The Prophet said to the slave, “Go, for you are free.”
Zanba said, “Am I not his guardian?” The Prophet said, “His guardian is Allah and
his messenger.”

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him,
said, “Whoever emancipates a believing slave, Allah will free every organ of his
from Hellfire in equal measure.”
Al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon
him, said, “Whoever donates a gift of milk, or a piece of silver, or who guides
others through a strait, he will be rewarded as if he has freed a slave.”
Abdullah ibn Umar reported: A man came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon
him, and he said, “O Messenger of Allah, how many times should I pardon my
servant?” The Prophet said, “Seventy times in each day.”

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “When one
of your servants brings your meal and you do not sit with him, let him have a
portion or two as he prepared it himself.”
and blessings be upon him, never struck anything with his hand, neither a woman nor
a servant, unless he was fighting in the way of Allah.

Jabir ibn Abdullah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, enjoined
good treatment of slaves and he would say, “Feed them from the same food you eat,
clothe them from the same clothes you wear, and do not torture the creation of
Allah Almighty.”

Maymun ibn Abi Shabib reported: ‘Ammar ibn Yasir, may Allah be pleased with him,
said, “None of you strikes his slave unjustly but that the slave will be granted
retaliation on the Day of Resurrection.”
Ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said,
“Whoever strikes his slave-boy sharply without right, or punches him, the expiation
for the sin is to emancipate him.”
Abu Umamah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, came from
Khaybar along with two young boys. The Prophet gave one of them to Ali ibn Abi
Talib and he said, “Do not beat him. I have prohibited hitting the people of prayer
and I saw him praying.” The Prophet gave the other boy to Abu Dharr and he said, “I
enjoin you to treat him well.” Afterwards, the Prophet said, “O Abu Dharr, what
have you done with the boy I gave to you?” Abu Dharr said, “You enjoined me to
treat him well, so I have freed him.”
Ibn Abbas reported: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him,
besieged the people of Al-Ta’if, he freed their slaves who came out to him.
Aisha reported: Abu Bakr once cursed some of his slaves. The Prophet, peace and
blessings be upon him, said, “O Abu Bakr! Those who curse, or those who are true?
No, by the Lord of the Ka’bah!” The Prophet said it two or three times. On that
day, Abu Bakr freed some of his slaves. Then, the Prophet came to him and he said,
“Do not do it again.”

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him,
said, “Those in your custody are to be fed and clothed. Do not assign them a task
unless they are able to do it.”
Abu Musa Al-Ashari reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said,
“Feed the hungry, visit the sick, and set the captives free.”
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him,
said, “Do not refer to anyone as ‘my slave,’ for all of you are the slaves of
Allah. Rather, you should refer to him as ‘my young man.’ The servant should not
refer to anyone as ‘my lord,’ but rather he should refer to him as ‘my master.’”
Suwayd ibn Muqarrin reported: He had a slave girl and someone slapped her, so he
said to him, “Did you not know that it is forbidden to strike the face? I was the
seventh of my brothers during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah, peace and
blessing be upon him, and we had only one servant. One of us became enraged and
slapped him, so the Prophet commanded us to set him free.”
