LESSON 1

THE TIME IS NOW

INTRODUCTION

Nothing is more important than people. Jesus clearly demonstrated this fact over
and over again during His three-year earthly ministry. His last words to His
disciples were designed to impress upon them the need to preach the gospel to a
lost and dying world–a world headed for a Christless eternity. These same words
are directed to us today. The time to reach the world is now!

I have wanted to prepare material about missionary work, especially work in the
Third World, for several years. There are significant differences between ministry
in Europe and ministry in Thailand, Indonesia, or India.

The nations of the world often change their receptivity to foreigners and foreign
religion. These changes often present new opportunities for ministry. As an
example, Russia’s doors are currently wide-open for the gospel.

Most people do not realize that Christianity originated in the East. The Bible was
written by Middle Eastern religious leaders. The physical background of
Christianity is centered in the Middle East and Africa. Christianity is neither an
American religion, nor a religion of white people. Christianity is a religion based
on the life of Jesus Christ, and the Bible. God’s Word records the origin of
humanity and their only means of eternal salvation.

4
The Time is Now

Noah and his three sons were a new beginning of the human race. Japheth is
believed to have fathered the European nations. Ham become the ancestor for the
African peoples. Shem was the forefather of the Middle and Far Eastern nations.

I have more than 50 years of experience in overseas ministry. I have sought the lost
in over 100 nations of the world. I hope these lessons will assist those who wish to
win the lost to Christ throughout the world.

I do not claim to know the entire scope of missions, I teach from my own personal
experiences in these lessons. There is usually more than one way to do a job, and
we must be willing to allow others to use different methods.

READING

Mark 16:15-16, And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the
gospel to every creature.

v. 16, He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not
shall be damned.

1. WHO IS RIGHT?

A. Paul wrote in I Corinthians 3:6, I have planted, Apollos watered; but God
gave the increase.

In missions, like in the total world of the church, there is a place for Peter
and Paul, Stephen and Timothy. There is even a place for Mary
Magdalene.

B. A major point of controversy in the church today is who and what is right
in missionary work. Everyone seems to have a different idea of how to
evangelize this generation with the gospel. It is amazing what can be
accomplished when nobody cares who gets the credit.

The words “untold millions yet untold” are continually in my heart. These
words are written on the walls of our offices in South Bend, Indiana. My
soul continually prays, “Lord, raise up apostles of might and vision who
will win millions of souls to the Savior.” I do not debate methods. I believe
that Jesus is coming soon. What we do must be done NOW!

5
The Time is Now

Do not spend time debating who is right or wrong. Millions of people are
dying and entering eternity without the Lord Jesus Christ. Let us reach
them together!

2. THE WORLD HARVEST IS READY

A crop has to be harvested when it is ripe. If you miss the right time, the
harvest will be destroyed because of spoilage. There is always the danger of
losing the produce at the time of harvest.

A. Joel 3:13, Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down;
for the press is full, the vats overflow; for their wickedness is great.

B. Revelation 14:15, And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a
loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for
the time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe.

C. Mark 4:29, But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in
the sickle, because the harvest is come.

D. Luke 10:2, Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the
labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would
send forth labourers into his harvest.

3. THE DOOR IS OPEN

The world is more open to the gospel now than I have ever seen it before. You
are able to preach in places like Russia, Poland and Hungary. These nations are
open to the gospel. Even though many of the South American countries are
Marxist, you can go to them and minister.

Some countries are closed traditional missionaries. You must enter them as a
professional, such as a teacher, doctor or engineer. As long as you continue
your professional activities, the government will not cause you any problem.
There are ways of getting into every country.

The people who cause trouble for missionaries are usually not the people in the
government. Most of the trouble is caused by religious leaders who attempt to

6
The Time is Now

manipulate the politicians. For example, in India, Hindu leaders often claim
that missionaries are destroying their traditional religion.

The same type of thing occurred in the New Testament. Jewish religious
leaders, the Pharisees, forced the Romans to crucify Jesus. Religious systems
can push their way into politics. They can manipulate politicians.

It is not usually the politicians who do not want you in their country. It is
religious zealots who want you to leave. Politicians want to keep their country
peaceful. Many of them are agnostics. They do not believe the “religious”
people. They would prefer to leave them alone. Politicians try to stay in power,
so they tolerate religious pressure in order to get votes.

A. I John 3:1, Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon
us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth
us not, because it knew him not.

B. John 14:17, Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive,
because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he
dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

C. Matthew 18:7, Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs
be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!

4. THE MAGNITUDE OF THE UNFINISHED TASK

There is much work which remains to be done. The pressing needs of the
millions of unreached deserve a greater effort by the Christians of the world.
We need to finish the task given to us by the Lord Jesus Christ.

A. Time is short. Some areas have already been closed to missionary work.
Pressures are mounting on foreign missionaries in many countries. An
urgency is in the air to do everything possible to evangelize, plant
churches, and strengthen local believers while there is still time.

Colossians 4:5, Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming
the time.

7
The Time is Now

B. The Church itself needs to be revived. In many places, there is only a

nominal form of Christianity. The Church needs to be saved. It needs to
develop a relationship with Christ.

II Timothy 3:5 says that people in the last days will practice a form of
godliness, but deny its true power. This is just as true on the mission field
as it is in places where traditional Christianity has existed for a long time.

C. There are specific areas of the world which still remain unreached. They
present a challenge to us. We need to continue to pray that doors will
continue to be opened for the witnesses of the gospel.

The penetration of the gospel has been greatest among the animistic
peoples of Asia, but major religious blocs like Hinduism, Islam and
Buddhism remain intact. Relatively few of these people have been
converted to Christianity.

I Corinthians 16:9, For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and
there are many adversaries.

D. There is a critical lack of Christian literature in many countries. Bibles and

other Christian literature have been smuggled into many of these countries;
but persecution and penalties are severe for people found in possession of
such material.

Pray for believers in these countries. Pray for the people who seek to find
ways to get Christian literature into the dark areas of the world.

Romans 10:17, So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word
of God.

E. Short-wave radio can reach into countries that cannot be penetrated by

missionaries. Christian radio is a source of immense comfort and blessing
to believers. Christian short-wave radio is a means of reaching and
evangelizing the lost.

Pray that Christian short-wave radio will continue to grow and reach to lost
of the world.

8
The Time is Now

Romans 10:13-14, For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord
shall be saved.

v. 14, How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed?
and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how
shall they hear without a preacher?

LESSON 2

THE CHALLENGE OF
UNTOLD MILLIONS YET UNTOLD

INTRODUCTION

On December 18, 1931, I sat beside a pulpit in a little wooden schoolhouse in the
Tennessee countryside. While I sat there, I experienced a vision of an uncountable
multitude of humanity traveling on a highway that abruptly ended at a precipice.
This precipice towered above a bottomless inferno. As the unending procession of
people from every nation of the world reached the end of the highway, I could see
them fall into the inferno for eternity.

I was totally unaware of the other people in that little schoolhouse. I did not hear
the songs they were singing or anything else that was going on around me. I was
only conscious of the screams of the damned souls sinking into hell.

In that vision, God drew me closer so I could see individual men and women
plunging into that awful chasm. I saw the distortion of their faces. I saw their
terror, the wild flailing of their arms as they clawed at the air and each other.

As I watched in stunned silence, God spoke to me out of that frightening chaos:

“You are responsible for these lost souls.”

As I backed away, I cried, “No, not me Lord! I do not know these people. I’ve
never been to Japan, China or India. How am I responsible?”

10
The Challenge of Untold Millions yet Untold

The voice of the Lord was tender, yet firm, “When I say unto the wicked, Thou
shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked
from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity;
but his blood will I require at thine hand.” (Ezekiel 3:18).

I cried out to God, “Why tell me?”

He responded, “I have told all believers. It is in My Word, and you will be judged
by the Word.”

God left no doubt in my mind that I am responsible for turning a million souls
from the Road to Hell to the Road to Life. I am responsible for leading these
people to the cross of Jesus Christ, and the way of eternal life.

A vision like that can make you a missionary in a hurry! It did me! God equipped
me for this call by giving me a hunger for His Word. He empowered me with the
Holy Spirit. He blessed me with the prayers of some of his saints–Howard Carter,
Donald Gee, Smith Wigglesworth and Lillian Yeomans, to name a few. He opened
doors of service for me. He gave me fearless faith to believe that whatever He led
me to do, He would implement and sustain.

Because of this vision and the call of God on my life, I have been able to pioneer
and establish churches in England, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Brazil, Australia
and the United States. These churches continually send out missionaries and
evangelists to spread the good news that Jesus Christ is Lord.

READING

Ezekiel 3:17-19, Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of
Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me.

v. 18, When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not
warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the
same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine
hand.

v. 19, Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from
his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.

11
The Challenge of Untold Millions yet Untold

1. YOU ARE WATCHMEN

A. You are a watchman.

B. You must hear the word from the mouth of the Lord. You must warn the
wicked.

C. The Lord shall require the blood of the wicked at your hand.

D. If you warn the wicked, you deliver your soul.

The night I had the vision of the lost millions was the night I became a
missionary. Since that time, I have never ceased to be a watchman for the Lord
Jesus Christ. It is my duty to tell the untold millions about the grace of God
and the mercy of Jesus Christ. This is every Christian’s mandate.

2. TELLING THE UNTOLD MILLIONS YET UNTOLD

The greatest challenge ever given, was given by the greatest leader in human
history. It is recorded in the 16th chapter of Mark.

Mark 16:15-18, And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach
the gospel to every creature.

v. 16, He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth
not shall be damned.

v. 17, And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they
cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

v. 18, They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall
not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

A. This mandate from the Lord Jesus Christ is called the Great Commission.
The Lord told us that saints who are raptured will be judged primarily upon
their response to this commission.

We are commanded to witness. We need to spread the gospel. We must

warn people about the consequences of unbelief.

12
The Challenge of Untold Millions yet Untold

B. Jesus’ disciples are commanded to take His place. This mandate was not
just to the disciples who were living at that time; but all disciples,
including us. The Lord will live, serve and work through us. He is the risen
Worker, we are His workmen.

Mark 16:20, And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord
working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

The Great Commission rings with urgency! No corner of the world can be
neglected! This commission is our Great Commission!

3. CHRISTIANITY VS. PAGANISM

A. Christianity should never give paganism an advantage.

B. The Ten Commandments are God’s reply to Hinduism. Moses heard from
heaven, and presented God’s law to the world while Hinduism was being
born.

C. While Buddha sat under his bodhi tree, Isaiah proclaimed God’s prophetic
word about the salvation of the world.

Isaiah 7:14, Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a
virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

D. We must humble ourselves, and ask forgiveness from the Lord.

Christians and Jews persecuted and mocked Mohammed rather than

teaching him the word and laws of God. Moslems have been a thorn in the
side of Christianity ever since.

E. We should feel great remorse because the churches of Acts chapter two,
lost their zeal to save the world.

A Canadian minister in Toronto once told me, with great sadness, about a
job left undone. “I was in China for 50 years. I cannot remember ever
winning a single soul for Jesus.”

This man had been a teacher for a Church of England school, but he never
did any evangelism among the Chinese.

13
The Challenge of Untold Millions yet Untold

4. PRODUCE AFTER YOUR OWN KIND

Robert Brown was the founder of a great church in New York City. His
church, Glad Tidings, was known around the world for its sacrificial
missionary offerings. It was an inspiration to other churches.

In my travels throughout the world, I never found a missionary supported by

Glad Tidings Church who had even a portion of the vision and vigor of Robert
Brown. His missionaries always praised the person who sent them into the
field. They called him a man of faith like Smith Wigglesworth; but none of
them ever demonstrated that same faith.

God told me that the church should not send exhorters to do an apostle’s job.

5. THE CHURCH’S GREAT RESPONSIBILITY

The greatest words ever spoken by the Lord Jesus Christ may have been the
Great Commission.

Mark 16:15-16, He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that
believeth not shall be damned.

v. 17, And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they
cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

This command gives the Church the greatest responsibility ever known. Many
organizations wish they had the power and authority to save humanity, but they
do not have it. Political parties would give a lot of money to buy this authority,
but only the Church has it. We have the authority from God to lead people to
salvation, or allow them to fall into damnation.

Matthew 16:19, So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received
up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

The responsibility is enormous. When you become a believer, you are

obligated to spread the Gospel. It is immaterial whether you spread it close to
home or far away. We must spread the Gospel so every person can have the
opportunity for salvation.

14
The Challenge of Untold Millions yet Untold

6. REACHING METROPOLITAN CENTERS

Anybody who feels that he should serve the Lord as an evangelist or

missionary wonders how he should do it. The Bible shows us how Paul, the
apostle to the Gentiles, fulfilled his call from the Lord.

Paul believed the way to win the world was through the great metropolitan
areas. He went to the centers of trade, political power, theology and
philosophy. He told them about the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. He
established churches in these cities. Sometimes he stayed in one area for a few
months. Sometimes he stayed for a few years. After he left, he wrote letters to
the churches he established. We can still read his letters to the churches in
Corinth, Galatia, Philippi, Colosse and Thessalonica.

I have felt this same call to the large cities of the world. Every town has rich
and poor people. Do not let all the rich people go to hell. Paul met governors,
kings and business people. I have seen both rich and poor people saved. The
churches I raised are still standing and reaching more people. Nationals go out
from these churches. They lead other people to salvation, and raise new
churches in other cities and villages throughout their country.

God may not call you to large metropolitan areas. Be true to whatever burden
for the lost God has placed in your heart. The Lord will honor you for your
commitment.

LESSON 3

THE FIVE-FOLD AND

SUPPORTIVE MINISTRIES OVERSEAS

INTRODUCTION

The five-fold ministry of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers is

necessary wherever the church is established. The ministry of helps and
administrations, which includes deacons and elders, is also necessary wherever the
body of Christ is organized.

READING

Ephesians 4:11-13, And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some,
evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

v. 12, For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying
of the body of Christ:

v. 13, Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of
God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

I Corinthians 12:28-30, And God hath set some in the church, first apostles,
secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings,
helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

16
The Five-fold and Supportive Ministries Overseas

v. 29, Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of
miracles?

v. 30, Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

1. WHAT IS AN APOSTLE?

There are several English translations of the Greek word apostolos. An apostle
is someone sent out with full power of attorney to act for another, like an
ambassador. The Greek word, apostolos, is found 81 times in the New
Testament.

A. Twice, the word is translated as messenger.

II Corinthians 8:23, Whether any do inquire of Titus, he is my partner and

fellowhelper concerning you: or our brethren be inquired of, they are the
messengers of the churches, and the glory of Christ.

Philippians 2:25, Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus,

my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your
messenger, and he that ministered to my wants.

B. The word is translated apostle 78 times.

C. It is translated he that is sent once.

John 13:16, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than
his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.

D. There are apostles today. None of the ministries of the church have been
abolished. These delegates, or sent ones, actively minister to the church
body. The position of apostle cannot be given or rescinded by people. It is
a calling of God.

Romans 1:1, 5, Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle,

separated unto the gospel of God.

v. 5, By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to

the faith among all nations, for his name.

17
The Five-fold and Supportive Ministries Overseas

E. Jesus called His first 12 disciples apostles, not teachers or evangelists. We

assume that the position of apostle is the highest ministry of the church. A
true missionary who founds a new foreign ministry is an apostle.

2. THE FRUIT OF APOSTLESHIP

A. Apostleship is a ministry endowed with the supernatural ability to enter

unknown areas like Paul did, and establish a church.

B. An apostle has a prophet’s ministry. He can present, under the anointing of

the Holy Spirit, what God wants that particular group to know.

C. An apostle has all the qualities of a pastor or shepherd to teach and guide a
church.

D. An apostle has the ability to evangelize. He can conduct city-wide crusades

to win lost souls.

E. An apostle has the ability to teach God’s word in a classroom or sanctuary.

F. An apostle demonstrates all the abilities of the five-fold ministry.

G. People today like to put tags on ministries and call them by certain
designations. This is dangerous. It can cause someone to develop pride in
possessing something when they do not have the ability to fulfill the office.

Tags were unnecessary in the Bible. Jesus taught us to know people by

their fruit. An apple tree does not have to tell everybody that it is an apple
tree. It just produces apples.

3. THE PURPOSE OF THE MINISTRY

A. There is a nine-fold purpose to the ministry.

Ephesians 4:11-16, , And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and
some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

v. 12, For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the
edifying of the body of Christ:

18
The Five-fold and Supportive Ministries Overseas

v. 13, Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the
Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the
fulness of Christ:

v. 14, That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and

carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and
cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

v. 15, But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things,
which is the head, even Christ:

v. 16, From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by
that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the
measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of
itself in love.

1) The perfecting, or equipping, of the saints.

2) The work of the ministry.

3) The edification of the body of Christ.

4) Till we come to the unity of the faith.

5) To the knowledge of the Son of God.

6) To a perfect man.

7) To the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

8) No longer tossed around by every wind of doctrine.

9) Speaking the truth in love.

B. The apostle is the key to all the ministries. He has the ability to perform all
the ministries. That is the reason the apostleship has the first position.

A person with an apostolic ministry can found a church. He can continue to

pastor that church as a shepherd. He has the ability to teach the people. The

19
The Five-fold and Supportive Ministries Overseas

apostle understands how to utilize the ministry of helps and

administrations in a church body so it can function properly.

C. There are combinations of ministries.

1) Stephen was selected to be a deacon. He was also a mighty teacher of

the Word.

Acts 6:5, 8-10, And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they
chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip,
and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas
a proselyte of Antioch:

v. 8, And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and
miracles among the people.

v. 9, Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the

synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of
them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.

v. 10, And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by
which he spake.

2) Philip was chosen to be a deacon. He became a great evangelist, and

moved an entire city for God.

Acts 8:5-8, Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and
preached Christ unto them.

v. 6, And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things
which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.

v. 7, For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many
that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that
were lame, were healed.

v. 8, And there was great joy in that city.

20
The Five-fold and Supportive Ministries Overseas

Stephen’s and Philip’s ministries are examples of combination ministries.

There are people who are teachers as well as pastors. Some people are
evangelists and pastors. These people can do both positions equally well.

4. PROPHETS

A. The second position in Church ministry is the office of the prophet.

B. There is a difference between a prophet, and the single gift of inspired

prophecy.

I Corinthians 14:3, But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to

edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

C. The position of a prophet in the Old Testament was that of a divine guide,
who led the people of Israel. The prophet was often called a seer.

I Samuel 9:9, (Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God,

thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for he that is now called a
Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)

The Hebrew word for seer is raah, which refers to a seeing, perceiving
person. It can also mean a chosen one, or a beholder of visions.

D. The prophets spoke to different groups.

1) They spoke to individuals. Peter prophesied to Ananias and Sapphira.

Acts 5:3, 9, But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart
to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?

v. 9, Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together
to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have
buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.

2) They spoke to nations. The Old Testaments prophets frequently

prophesied to the nation of Israel.

21
The Five-fold and Supportive Ministries Overseas

Hosea 9:1, Do not rejoice, O Israel, with joy like other peoples, For
you have played the harlot against your God. You have made love for
hire on every threshing floor. (NKJV)

3) They prophesied to the world.

Jeremiah 1:5, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before
thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained
thee a prophet unto the nations.

E. Female prophets, or prophetesses, are mentioned in the Bible. God has

used women in both conventional and unconventional ways.

1) Miriam.

Exodus 15:20, And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a
timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels
and with dances.

2) Deborah.

Judges 4:4, And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she

judged Israel at that time.

3) Huldah.

II Kings 22:14, So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and
Shaphan, and Asahiah, went unto Huldah the prophetess, the wife of
Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe;
(now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college;) and they communed with
her.

4) Anna.

Luke 2:36-37, And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of
Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived
with an husband seven years from her virginity;

22
The Five-fold and Supportive Ministries Overseas

v. 37, And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which
departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers
night and day.

5. EVANGELISTS

A. Acts 21:8, And the next day we that were of Paul's company departed, and
came unto Caesarea: and we entered into the house of Philip the
evangelist, which was one of the seven; and abode with him.

B. II Timothy 4:5, But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the
work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

6. PASTORS

A. The Greek word, poimen, is only used once in the New Testament. It is
translated as pastors.

Ephesians 4:11, And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and
some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

B. The word, shepherd, is used 16 times in the New Testament.

C. The Hebrew word, raah, can mean to tend a flock. It is translated as

pastors eight times.

Jeremiah 3:15, And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which
shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.

D. The word, shepherd, is used 63 times in the Old Testament.

7. TEACHERS

Acts 13:1-2, Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain
prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and
Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the
tetrarch, and Saul.

v. 2, As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate
me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

8. ELDERS

A. I Timothy 5:17-18, Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of
double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.

v. 18, For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth
out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.

B. Acts 20:17, And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of
the church.

C. James 5:14, Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the
church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of
the Lord:

D. Acts 14:23, And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and
had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they
believed.

E. Titus 1:5-9, For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in
order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had
appointed thee:

v. 6, If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children

not accused of riot or unruly.

v. 7, For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not

selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy
lucre;

v. 8, But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy,

temperate;

v. 9, Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be
able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

F. I Peter 5:1-4, The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an
elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the
glory that shall be revealed:

24
The Five-fold and Supportive Ministries Overseas

v. 2, Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight
thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready
mind;

v. 3, Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to

the flock.

v. 4, And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown
of glory that fadeth not away.

9. DEACONS

A. The first deacons of the early church are mentioned in the book of Acts.

Acts 6:1-6, And in those days, when the number of the disciples was
multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews,
because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.

v. 2, Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and
said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve
tables.

v. 3, Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest

report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this
business.

v. 4, But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry

of the word.

v. 5, And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen,
a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and
Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:

v. 6, Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they
laid their hands on them.

B. I Timothy 3:8-13, Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued,

not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

25
The Five-fold and Supportive Ministries Overseas

v. 9, Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

v. 10, And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a
deacon, being found blameless.

v. 11, Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in
all things.

v. 12, Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children
and their own houses well.

v. 13, For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to
themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in
Christ Jesus.

10. THE MINISTRY OF HELPS

A. I Corinthians 12:28, And God hath set some in the church, first apostles,
secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of
healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

B. The New Testament is full of examples of the ministry of helps. The word
translated “helps” in Acts 27:17 implies a rope-like cable that a ship used
to wrap around itself during a storm. The purpose of this cable was to keep
a ship from breaking apart during the fierceness of gale-force winds.

C. Phoebe carried Paul’s letter to the Romans in Rome.

Romans 16:1, I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of
the church which is at Cenchrea:

D. Lydia, who welcomed and fed Paul, was a help.

Acts 16:14-15, And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of

the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the
Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.

v. 15, And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us,
saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house,
and abide there. And she constrained us.

26
The Five-fold and Supportive Ministries Overseas

E. Jesus said that you can be a help with the gift of a simple drink of water.

Matthew 10:40-42, He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that

receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

v. 41, He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a

prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a
righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.

v. 42, And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup
of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall
in no wise lose his reward.

F. Visiting the sick is a help.

G. Working in a church office is a help.

H. Television work is a help.

I. Donating money to support the work of the Lord is a help.

J. Aaron and Hur held up the arms of Moses. They were helps.

Exodus 17:12, But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and
put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his
hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his
hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

11. ADMINISTRATIONS

I Corinthians 12:28, And God hath set some in the church, first apostles,
secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of
healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

The Greek word, kubernesis, means to steer or guide.

This word has no implication of power or rule. People who possess the
knowledge to steer and guide the church throughout its problems have the gift
of administrations.

27
The Five-fold and Supportive Ministries Overseas

Spiritually mature men and women with God’s anointing can bless the church
through spiritual administration. These people can be deacons and elders, yet
they can also serve in a different role. They can function in the position of
administrators.

WORLD MISSIONS

LESSON 4

THE CALL TO OVERSEAS MINISTRY

INTRODUCTION

We must have God’s direction when choosing where to go, and in what country or
city to minister.

1. WHAT IS A CALL?

A. Every Christian feels a call to preach, but not necessarily a call to full-time
ministry. God sometimes tests our willingness to obey Him.

B. All ministers feel a call to missions. Not all of them are called to live on
the mission field, but only to be willing to go there.

C. A ticket to Africa.

A young Bible college graduate visited South Bend. He said that he had
been called to minister in Africa. I bought his ticket and saw him leave. A
few days later he was back. He said he had only been called to pray for
Africa.

This young man’s emotions were aroused by a prayer group at his Bible
college. God may have only been asking him to be willing to go to Africa.

29
The Call to Overseas Ministry

D. Our home base must also feel the burden of world evangelism.

2. A SPECIAL REVELATION FOR MISSIONS

A. Not everyone receives a call to missionary ministry as dramatically as the

apostle Paul did. Paul preached from the white-hot conviction born out of
his experience with the power of God on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:1-
22).

Paul had all of the doctrine and religious beliefs knocked of him. He
caught a glimpse of the glorified Christ. After that experience, Paul had
only one message–the need for faith in a crucified and risen Lord. This
message is demonstrated throughout his New Testament epistles.

Paul was blinded, and led into Damascus. He met Ananias, a godly man,
who was led by the Lord. When Ananias protested to God about Paul (then
called Saul), he was told:

Acts 9:15, But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen
vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the
children of Israel:

B. I had a dramatic encounter with God. It resulted in the conviction that I

should preach the Gospel. I saw a vision of an uncountable multitude of
people traveling down a highway that ended abruptly at a precipice. This
precipice towered above a bottomless inferno. As this unending procession
of people from every nation on earth came to the end of the highway, they
fell off the edge into eternity.

As I watched in stunned silence, God spoke to my heart from that

frightening chaos: “You are responsible for those lost souls.”

You may not have a dramatic experience, most people do not. When God
gets your attention, by whatever means, the desired response is obedience
to His command.

Isaiah 6:8, …Then said I, Here am I; send me.

30
The Call to Overseas Ministry

The Lord is pleased when His children catch the vision of the perishing
multitudes and respond eagerly. When you do respond, you too become
one of His chosen.

C. When God calls us to service, whether it is home missions, the foreign

field, or faithfulness wherever we are, He will give us a certainty about
what we should do and where we should serve.

This certainty comes in answer to prayer. There are many Biblical

precedents which demonstrate this to us. These examples begin with
Abram’s call to leave Ur of the Chaldees to the dramatic encounter Paul
experienced, and the subsequent call which came to many other people.

Jesus said to His disciples, and included us today:

Matthew 4:19, …Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

The very heart of the book of Acts is its witness of men’s obedience to the
heavenly call.

Acts 1:8, …and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in

all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

3. WHY EVANGELISM AND MISSIONS ABROAD?

A. We are commanded by the Lord Jesus Christ to evangelize the lost. Global
missions were His idea.

John 4:35, …behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the
fields; for they are white already to harvest.

John 20:21, Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my
Father hath sent me, even so send I you.

The instructions Jesus gave to Peter were meant for us as well.

John 21:15-17, …Feed my lambs.

v. 16, …Feed my sheep.

31
The Call to Overseas Ministry

John 21:17, …Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

Finally there is the Great Commission in Matthew 28, and repeated in

Mark 16:15-18.

Matthew 28:19-20, Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them

in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

v. 20, Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded

you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

B. Global evangelism is a pre-condition for Christ’s return.

Matthew 24:14, And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all
the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

4. WE LABOR WITH CHRIST

The greatest sin of this age, and any age, is the rejection of Jesus Christ.
Everyone who hears the Gospel must either accept or reject Him. The people
who live during the time of Jesus made their choice. The people of our day
must make the same choice.

Our responsibility is to become co-laborers with Christ in proclaiming the

message of salvation.

I Corinthians 3:9, For we are laborers together with God…

A. The disciples provided us with an example of laboring with God. They

acted on the Great Commission (Mark 16:15-18).

Mark 16:20, And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord
working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

B. Faithfulness is a requirement.

I Corinthians 4:1-2, Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of

Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.

v. 2, Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.

32
The Call to Overseas Ministry

C. Steadfastness is also required.

I Corinthians 15:58, Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast,

unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye
know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

5. SHORT-TERM MISSIONS

A. Short-term missions abroad and summer missionary projects seem to fit the
lifestyles of this generation. Both have been made feasible by the rapid
transportation of the jet age, and the affluence of American society.

B. Some missionary organizations will not accept new career missionaries.

New recruits are exposed to short-term missions. Only after they have
spent a term or two in the field are they eligible to become career
missionaries.

C. Every year, thousands of college students serve overseas under the

oversight of a mission board. They pay their own transportation costs, and
sometimes their room and board. They return to campus full of enthusiasm.
They share their experiences and excitement with other students.

Many colleges believe that summer and semester missionary projects

change the attitude of students toward foreign missions.

D. Twenty-five percent of the people who serve in short-term missions

become career missionaries.

E. The primary motive for short-term missionary programs is two-fold:

1) To promote better understanding of missionaries’ goals.

2) To develop appreciation of Christians in another culture. Most short-

term missionaries feel that their service has something for them
personally. This is probably more important than actually helping
career missionaries.

F. Short-term missions are accomplished by thousands of Christians every

year as they travel as tourists, pilgrims and visitors.

33
The Call to Overseas Ministry

6. THE MINISTRY OF HELPS OVERSEAS

A. After World War II, the ministry of helps in the mission field grew
enormously.

1) Doctors and nurses give their time and talent.

2) Farmers have taught nationals how to use their resources better.

Dairymen have taught their counterparts in other countries how to
improve the health and quality of their animals and products.

3) Certified counselors have trained men and women about human

behavior. They have blessed people in other lands with the knowledge
of how to love and respect other members of their families.

4) Since modern missions began, teachers have volunteered to go to

foreign lands. They offer their expertise in the area of education. Only
eternity can reveal the extent of the blessing these educators have
brought to ignorant masses. They may have even changed the destiny
of nations.

5) Businessmen are greatly needed on the mission field. They can teach
nationals how to administrate, as well as evangelize. Lay business
people have been a great inspiration to overseas laymen.

6) People involved with the construction industry are necessary to

supervise and teach construction techniques to nationals. In Manila, an
American builder observed and helped the local general contractor
when we built Bethel Temple.

B. Perhaps nine out of ten people who go to the mission field can be classified
as helpers. Their service does them more good than it does for the people
in those lands.

Career missionaries are often glad to see a short-term missionary leave.

They are responsible for him, and often consider him a nuisance. He does
not know what to do, and makes frequent mistakes. Though he may return
home with a glowing report, the career missionary is glad to see him leave.

34
The Call to Overseas Ministry

Usually about the time one short-term missionary leaves, another arrives.
There are career missionaries who will not even pick people up at the
airport any more. They say, “If I did that in this big city, all I would do is
pick people up at the airport. I have been called to be a missionary, and
cannot afford to spend that much time at the airport.”

Most short-term people are really on vacation. They go for a few days or
weeks, then return home. They work with a national who tells them lies
about the size of his ministry. People who go to the mission field just to see
what God is doing, do not have a good reason to be there. They may be
able to do more good at home.

We should not encourage people to be short-term missionaries. If

somebody expresses a desire to go to the mission field, point them towards
the local “skid” row. They can find a mission field in their home town.

Foreign countries are more than a mission field–they are a “danger field.”
You can lose your life there. You do not have to cross an ocean to visit a
mission field. Occasionally, I have taken people on tours to the mission
field. It has always been a mistake. These people laugh at the nationals.
They do not understand their customs and habits.

Missions are a serious business. The mission field is no place to act like a
fool. When I go on the mission field, I want to just go, do the job for Jesus,
and return home.

C. The face of missions is changing. Many of these changes are reflected by

the independently-operated, self-supporting efforts of lay people. Many
countries are closed to traditional missionaries, but they are often open to
individuals who can contribute to the improvement of that country.

These missionaries have various areas of expertise and training that make
them valuable in other counties. Their approaches to the local people may
be as varied as their occupations, but each one is motivated by the Great
Commission. They are whole-heartedly devoted to Christ.

Their qualifications include:

35
The Call to Overseas Ministry

1) Good physical health.

2) Emotional stability.

3) Well-grounded spiritual lives.

4) Strong prayer lives.

5) Sound thinking.

6) Sensitivity and alertness to any special needs they encounter.

7) Kindness and compassion.

8) Adaptability and a willingness to learn.

9) Fearlessness.

10) They must be unprejudiced.

11) Finally, they must be rooted and grounded in love.

Ephesians 3:16-19, That he would grant you, according to the riches of

his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;

v. 17, That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted
and grounded in love,

v. 18, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and
length, and depth, and height;

v. 19, And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye
might be filled with all the fulness of God.

These verses aptly describe the qualities needed by individuals on the

mission field.

D. Professional people often go to the mission field at different points in their

lifetimes. Some people go during a pre-career period, while they are
training for their career or before they start working full-time in that career.

36
The Call to Overseas Ministry

Others go in a mid-career period. They might take a leave of absence, or an

extended vacation to work on the mission field. Many retirees spend their
post-career years involved with missions.

7. THE PASTOR AND MISSIONS

The local pastor is the key to a successful missionary enterprise. He can be

involved in many aspects of missionary activities.

A. A pastor needs a burning missionary heart to carry out an aggressive

evangelistic program for the world.

B. The pastor must encourage the youth of his church to respond to the world-
wide call of God.

C. The pastor must support missions in his sermons and before his board
members. He must be willing to invite missionaries to speak to his
congregation.

D. The pastor should have an area in his church where pictures from the
mission field can be posted. He should show missionary films.

E. A pastor is often able to visit the mission field. He can organize lay
workers to go with him and do many jobs such as erecting buildings,
digging wells or teaching a trade to nationals.

8. WOMEN WORKERS OVERSEAS

The gospel makes us servants of God, not slaves.

Galatians 3:28, There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor
free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

There has been a lot of controversy in some religious organizations, churches

and missionary boards as to whether a single woman should carry on
missionary work overseas.

A. In my experience, women have proven their ability to establish churches

and institutions in foreign lands, with or without a husband. Their abilities
differ the same way men’s abilities differ.

37
The Call to Overseas Ministry

B. I was privileged to know the great missionary, Lillian Trasher. She was
often called the Nile Mother because of her work in Egypt. I visited the
orphanage where she ministered to over 1,000 children. Before I ever met
her, she had cared for over 6,000 homeless children. Nothing exceeded the
admiration I felt for this woman and her tremendous work. I wrote her
biography. It was published in 1951.

Lillian Trasher chose Egypt as her field of service. It is one of the most
important Moslem countries in the world, both then and now. When I
visited her, she had spent 40 years in this amazing work.

Few women have single-handedly evoked the praise and public approval of
Lillian Trasher. It is rare when a woman demonstrates the spiritual
audacity, native pluck and preserving persuasiveness she did.

Her orphanage was visited by kings and queens, noblemen and statesmen,
business people and college students, people from all walks of life. Every
one of them declared her work to be a miracle! She overcame great
obstacles to build her home for orphans and widows. All of Egypt knew
about her faith, courage and success. She was honored by business and the
Egyptian government.

C. Women have an important place on the mission field. I know first-hand

what they can do. I have seen their success throughout my world-wide
travels.

Before World War II, many valiant women founded churches, schools and
children’s homes in China. Their services were sacrificial and monumental.

D. No doubt a stronger church could be presented if every female missionary

had a husband. This way a family pattern could be demonstrated to the
local community; but when we cannot do what is best, we must do what is
good.

E. Both married and unmarried women have been some of our greatest
missionaries. Their prayers have moved cities and nations. Their tender
care for the hurt, sorrow and suffering of the people is well-documented.

38
The Call to Overseas Ministry

F. Mary Slessor of Calabar, Nigeria was a pioneer missionary in the 19th

century. In the Cross River area, she out-worked most male missionaries.
Her faithfulness to evangelism in Africa was tremendous.

9. EVANGELIZING THE MILITARY

A. American servicemen and women overseas often refer to themselves as the

“forgotten ones.”

1) They drink because beer is often cheap or free, and clean water is
almost unattainable.

2) Many of them use drugs, because they want an escape from their
drudgery.

3) They commit immoral acts, because sex is available and cheap.

4) They need attention, love and the power of God.

B. American diplomats and businessmen, like the military, are often a lost
segment of society. They have wealth and leisure, so they seek pleasure.
They become a group apart from other people.

C. Raymond T. Richey decided the military in Korea was a good place to

work for God. When he was discharged, he continued to pioneer churches
there. Much of South Korea’s current revival stems from his military
evangelism.

D. Bob Pierce did a great work in Korea.

E. Billy Graham has ministered to the military throughout the world.

F. There are many other people, all over the world, who are effectively
working with the military.

G. Military people often evangelize each other. They form Bible study and
prayer groups.

39
The Call to Overseas Ministry

H. Once I conducted a seminar for our military in Germany. It was held on-
base, and supported by American service people. Evangelism is one of the
greatest needs of our military today.

LESSON 5

THE HOLY SPIRIT IN MISSIONS

INTRODUCTION

This period of time is known as the Dispensation of Grace. It can also be called the
Dispensation of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is greatly needed in every
endeavor of the Gospel. This is especially evident in world missions.

1. THE GLOBAL COMMAND

A. Mark 16:15-20, And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and
preach the gospel to every creature.

v. 16, He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that

believeth not shall be damned.

v. 17, And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall
they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

v. 18, They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it
shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall
recover.

v. 19, So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up
into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

41
The Holy Spirit in Missions

v. 20, And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working
with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

B. Obedience to the command.

Matthew 28:18-20, And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All
power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

v. 19, Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name
of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

v. 20, Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded

you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

1) Jesus Christ said that power is available.

2) “Go” is the total commission.

3) “Teach” is the beginning of salvation.

4) Baptism is a public witness.

5) Observe Christ’s commandments.

6) Personal communion with Christ is necessary.

7) This command is in force until the world ends.

C. Jesus Christ confirmed the covenant.

Luke 24:47-49, And that repentance and remission of sins should be

preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

v. 48, And ye are witnesses of these things.

v. 49, And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye
in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

42
The Holy Spirit in Missions

D. The command in action.

Acts 1:8, But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come
upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all
Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

2. THE GLOBAL BIRTH OF THE CHURCH

Acts 2:5-12, And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of
every nation under heaven.

v. 6, Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were
confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

v. 7, And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold,
are not all these which speak Galilaeans?

v. 8, And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?

v. 9, Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia,

and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,

v. 10, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about
Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,

v. 11, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the
wonderful works of God.

v. 12, And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another,
What meaneth this?

Every nation under heaven was represented at the founding of the church.
Sixteen nations are specifically mentioned.

3. THE INFANT CHURCH AND ITS WORLD MISSION

A. Samaria was a city of half-breeds. By ministering to them, the disciples

fulfilled Christ’s commission.

43
The Holy Spirit in Missions

Acts 8:5-8, Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached
Christ unto them.

v. 6, And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which
Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.

v. 7, For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that
were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were
lame, were healed.

v. 8, And there was great joy in that city.

B. The Ethiopian represented Africa, and the descendants of Noah’s third son,
Ham.

Acts 8:26-35, And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise,
and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem
unto Gaza, which is desert.

v. 27, And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch

v. 29, Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this
chariot.

v. 30, And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet
Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

v. 31, And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he
desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

v. 32, The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a
sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened
he not his mouth:

v. 33, In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall

Acts 9:1-12, And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter
against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,

v. 2, And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he

found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring
them bound unto Jerusalem.

v. 3, And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there

shined round about him a light from heaven:

v. 4, And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul,
Saul, why persecutest thou me?

v. 5, And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus
whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

v. 6, And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me
to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall
be told thee what thou must do.

v. 7, And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a
voice, but seeing no man.

v. 8, And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he
saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into
Damascus.

v. 9, And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink.

v. 10, And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and
to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here,
Lord.

v. 11, And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is
called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of

v. 12, And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and
putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight.

D. The Roman centurion was from Europe. He represented the nations

descended from Noah’s son, Japheth.

Acts 10:9-20, On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew
nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth
hour:

v. 10, And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they
made ready, he fell into a trance,

v. 11, And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him,
as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the
earth:

v. 12, Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild
beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.

v. 13, And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.

v. 14, But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is
common or unclean.

v. 15, And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath
cleansed, that call not thou common.

v. 16, This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into
heaven.

46

v. 17, Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had
seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had
made inquiry for Simon's house, and stood before the gate,

v. 18, And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter,
were lodged there.

v. 19, While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold,
three men seek thee.

v. 20, Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting
nothing: for I have sent them.

This was the beginning of the delivery of the Gospel to pagan Europe.

4. THE HOLY SPIRIT SENT OUT THE WORKERS

A. Acts 13:1-4, Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain
prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger,
and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with
Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

v. 2, As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said,
Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called
them.

v. 3, And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them,
they sent them away.

v. 4, So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia;
and from thence they sailed to Cyprus.

B. The church’s doctrines were directed by the Holy Spirit.

Acts 15:28-32, For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay
upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;

v. 29, That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and
from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep
yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.

47
The Holy Spirit in Missions

v. 30, So when they were dismissed, they came to Antioch: and when they
had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the epistle:

v. 31, Which when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation.

v. 32, And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the
brethren with many words, and confirmed them.

C. The Holy Spirit directed the early missions.

Acts 16:6-7, Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region
of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in
Asia,

v. 7, After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but
the Spirit suffered them not.

7. PAUL USED THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN MISSIONS

A. Romans 15:19, Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the
Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I
have fully preached the gospel of Christ.

words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

PLANTING A TREE

INTRODUCTION

Missionary work is often best described as “harem-scarem." Before World War II,
many denominations built conclaves for themselves on foreign fields. They bought
some land, and built walls around it in most countries. The missionaries remained
behind those walls, protected. They had some contact with the local people, but not
much.

In those days, national pastors were usually given limited authority. Most
missionaries felt that national pastors did not have the ability to operate a church. I
knew this feeling was wrong, and would never work. China had about one million
believers under the missionary evangelists. Today, without missionaries and under
constant oppression, there are at least 25 million Christians.

READING

Ecclesiastes 3:1-2, To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose
under the heaven:

v. 2, A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up
that which is planted;

49
Planting a Tree

1. A TREE IN JERUSALEM

On a rocky Judean hillside near Jerusalem, I planted a tree. At the time it

seemed like a small thing to do; but the Israeli government assured me that if
enough visitors to Israel planted trees, the destiny of their land would change.

The government official explained how enough trees planted on the hillsides
created a forest. The trees would then draw rain clouds to the area. That forest
would change the climate of the country.

Then he smiled and told us that the trees would become nesting places for
birds, and a habitat for wildlife. The falling foliage from the trees would help
the ground hold rain, and create topsoil. This would help the land become
fertile.

I felt good about purchasing and planting a tree which, with care, patience and
time, would change a nation.

2. THE IMMORTAL TREE

This tree is not a long-needled pine planted on a hillside. The immortal tree is
people–living people–who become the bark, pulp, trunk, roots and branches of
the glorious Church of the Lord Jesus Christ.

A. The Bible opens and closes with a tree. In Genesis, the man, Adam, stood
before the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:17). In the
book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ, redeemed man stands before the
tree of life. The fruit of this tree gives eternal life to people (Revelation
22:2).

B. The Bible centers around a unique tree called the “cross.” It is the tree
where the Son of God truly became the Son of Man. It is the tree of
opportunity for humanity to become sons of God.

John 1:12, But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become
the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Romans 8:14, For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the
sons of God.

50
Planting a Tree

4. A FRUITFUL TREE

A. The Psalmist said a believer is like a tree planted by rivers of living water.

Psalms 1:3, And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that
bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and
whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

B. I have labored for Christ in over 100 nations through missionary

endeavors. My vision has always been to plant the church by rivers of
living water.

God told me that about 50% of the world’s nations have one, central,
leading city. That is where the best and brightest of the nation’s people
gravitate for education, business and social life. When you establish a
powerful church here, people can be saved from all over the nation. These
people return to their villages and towns, and begin to evangelize. An
entire country can be reached through one city.

I saw strong results of this concept in Manila, Philippines and Rio de

Janeiro, Brazil.

4. GIVE AND TAKE

You cannot plant without seed. You cannot give away what you do not
possess. You have to have something in order to give it away.

Whatever you plant will produce after its own kind. Pygmies produce pygmies.
Large people produce other large people. Small preachers produce small
churches.

5. RICE CHRISTIANS

In China, insincere Christians and people who are dependent on the food given
out by the missionaries are called “rice Christians.” This term means that they
have no stability within themselves. An outside source of strength is the only
thing that keeps them alive.

51
Planting a Tree

6. THE FRUIT OF A TREE

A. When modern missions began, many missionaries saw how poor many of
the local people on the field were, and concluded that money from home
was needed to pay the expenses of the church. They felt so sorry for the
local people that they would not even receive tithes and offerings from
them.

B. These people doled out the “fruit” of Christianity. Nearly every day, and
surely every week, new “fruit” had to arrive for these poor people or they
would die.

C. Every country has at least one big city, but Satan convinced the early
missionaries that it would be selfish to go to a large city. They were
convinced that evangelism in a large city was not really missionary work.
This was a way to keep the local church poor.

Every country has wealthy people. Many of them are sick or sad. Their
wealth does not satisfy them. These people are more than able to support
the national church.

I have observed missions in more than 100 countries. I told our missions
board years ago that the large cities were abounding with wealth. Someone
just needed to go there and collect it. These religious leaders replied that
the home constituency in the United States would be disillusioned if
money was taken from the nationals.

D. All the needs of my missionary work have been supplied locally. In

Manila, we began to build a large church from a World War II-surplus, B-
52 hangar. We only had five members in the church at that time. The
mayor of Manila became excited over the deliverance of Clarita
Villanueva, and gave us permits to minister in the central plaza of the city.
We collected offerings nightly, and built the church with those local
offerings. When the building was finished, all its costs were paid.

E. A great story of local financing centers on Dr. Yonggi Cho. I am glad that
the largest, and possibly the richest, church in the world is located in a
third-world country. Once missionaries had to receive funds from a home-
base in order to rent a hall or build a church, but Dr. Cho receives his total

52
Planting a Tree

financial support from the South Koreans. Anyone who does not think the
local community can support a church should be brought back from the
mission field.

F. If you plant a tree, you plant life. The fruit of that tree belongs to the
people of that locality. It will continue to provide fruit as long as the
people care for it. If you provide fruit from outside the country, the people
will be hungry again in a few hours.

7. RAISING UP LEADERS

Wherever I am on the mission field, I become the spiritual leader of the area
while I am there. I am usually asked to teach at a local Bible college. I teach
subjects like the Gifts of the Spirit, the Acts of the Apostles, or Romans. I do
not go to the mission field just to found a church; I go to direct the minds and
spirits of young people. I try to look for tomorrow’s leaders.

8. ESTABLISHING A CHURCH

When I am on the mission field, I teach the nationals how to build a church. I
tell them, “Unless you fulfill the Great Commission, you should not go out to
preach. Go to the city in the morning, begin knocking on doors and greet the
people. Say, ‘Good morning. God bless you. I have come to your city to love
you. I believe Jesus can heal the sick. Is anybody here ill?’

“When you find someone who is sick, pray for him, and give him a gospel
tract. Then, go to the next house and do the same thing. Do this all morning,
and somebody may offer you lunch. Do not be lazy, but go back to work after
lunch. In the evening someone will probably ask you to spend the night. God
will provide a place for you to eat and sleep. The next day you begin again.
The people you have helped and blessed will tell their friends. By the end of
the week you will have a congregation. Simply announce the time and place to
meet, and the local people will start your church. You do not need foreign
support. This is the way to be self-supporting right away.”

Anyone who has compassion for a nation can raise a church in that country. It
is the same in any country. You can go somewhere and make a few personal
contacts. You may have to hold meetings in a home or basement in the
beginning. As your church grows, you can rent a hotel room or space in a

53
Planting a Tree

building. As your fellowship begins to unify, start to raise the money to buy
land and a building. Normally, you will have to go into debt. It may take a few
years to pay off the debt, but soon you will have a debt-free, self-supporting
church.

9. CREATING A CHURCH WITH MISSIONARY VISION

After a church has been strongly established, you can begin to leave two or
three times a year without hurting the congregation. It is important to tell the
congregation from the beginning that they are a world church. Everyone needs
to become associated with missions. Teach them that their pastor is called to
minister to the world, as well as his congregation. Take up missionary
offerings on a regular basis, so the people will understand that this church
promotes missions.

When you establish a church, take up two offerings on Sunday. The first
offering is for the expenses of the church, and the second can be saved for
world missions. Constantly remind the people that you will be going to the
mission field to preach in a few months. Otherwise, they may resent their
pastor’s travels to and from the field.

MOVING A NATION WITH REVIVAL

INTRODUCTION

Most overseas missionary endeavors begin small, and stay that way. Perhaps the
early pioneers who suffered great difficulties with foreign governments,
missionary boards and limited finances thought small groups should be the pattern.

BREAKING DEMON POWER

ON THE MISSION FIELD

INTRODUCTION

Humanity has been solemnly warned by God against worshipping demons.

I Corinthians 10:20, But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they
sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship
with devils.

God refuses to allow His worshippers to have any kind of fellowship with the
devil, his angels or any of his works.

II Timothy 2:26, And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the
devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

This verse may refer to heathen nations. It is possible to recover them from the
snare of the devil through the ministry of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

A snare is a trap. It is often used to capture a rabbit or squirrel. The animal believes
it has found food, and by entering the trap or snare is caught. The devil deceives
people in both heathen and Christian nations in the same manner. He fools them
into thinking that they will find pleasure, but they do not find any pleasure. He
tricks them into believing that everything will be all right if they follow him, but he

59
Breaking Demon Power on the Mission Field

lies. Scripture indicates that the devil deliberately and willfully sets snares to
capture human beings for his service.

Although I was reared in an evangelical church and environment, and had seen the
sick prayed for many times, I do not ever remember hearing a sermon about casting
out demons. If somebody became mentally uncontrollable, he was sent to an insane
asylum. For some reason we did not see a relationship between divine healing and
mental illness.

Since I had never heard a sermon about the deliverance of the mentally disturbed,
or received instruction on what to do for the demon-possessed person, I was
completely uninitiated when I went on the mission field.

READING

Matthew 10:7-8, And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.

v. 8, Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye
have received, freely give.

1. THE GIRL IN JAVA

The first time I was confronted by a demon-possessed person was in Indonesia,

on the island of Java. We had recently arrived in the country, and this was the
first meeting we held. The service was conducted in Javanese language.
Though I recognized the melodies of some of the songs, I did not understand
the lyrics.

As the first song began, a girl, about 12 or 13 years of age, got off the front
pew and began to writhe on the floor like a serpent. I seemed to be the only
person concerned about her behavior. Green foam came out of her mouth,
covering her chin and upper lip. This did not seem to bother anyone else either.

I assumed this was something that had happened before. There were over 600
people in the meeting hall, and no one was concerned about the girl on the
floor. She looked a lot like a snake with green foam coming out of its mouth.
She would look up at the platform and grin a silly grin. Her eyes would dance
like a serpent’s, and foam would belch out of her mouth. She would move
forward three or four feet, wiggle around, then move back three or four feet on

60
Breaking Demon Power on the Mission Field

the floor. This continued for about 30 minutes during the preliminaries of the
service. The girl seemed to be completely ignored, but something was building
up strongly within me. I knew I had to meet the challenge of the devil.

When I was asked to preach, my interpreter and I walked to the pulpit. Rather
than greeting the people, the words, “Get up and sit down!” burst from my
mouth. My interpreter was so startled that he did not respond. The girl was
illiterate and knew no English. The only one who could have understood me
was the spirit within her.

Instantly, the girl wiped the foam from her mouth. She stood up and sat on the
pew like a mummy. She never moved a muscle while I preached for 45
minutes. At the end of my sermon, without any forethought, I looked at the girl
and said, “Come out of her! Be free in Jesus’ name!”

The transfixed look immediately left her. The rigidity left her body. She
relaxed, smiled and looked around the room. Then a wave of glory passed over
the congregation as they watched the girl become normal. My interpreter again
was astonished at what happened and never said a word. The demonic spirit
within that girl understood perfectly what I had said.

Later, I tried to evaluate this new experience. I knew it had brought deliverance
to the meeting. When the girl obeyed me and sat on the pew, the entire
congregation developed a readiness to listen. When I commanded her to be
free, a tremendous victory came into the meeting and the people thronged to
the front to receive Jesus Christ as their Savior.

Later, I talked to Howard Carter about this event. He told me of other instances
where he had seen spirits cast out of people. We began to discuss the subject
more often. We knew we were in a land of deep witchcraft. Curses were placed
on people, and black magic was prevalent in every village. Almost daily, we
encountered situations of demon power that we never saw before.

2. BLACK AND WHITE ANGELS IN JAVA

Later, I was in another meeting in a different town of Java. The building was
filled with people. Every seat was taken, and extra chairs were placed in the
aisles. As I entered the room and began to walk the length of the crowded
church, a woman in one of the extra chairs tugged gently on my sleeve. She

61
Breaking Demon Power on the Mission Field

looked up at me, and grinned saying, “Sir, you have a little black angel in you,
and I have a white angel in me.”

When I heard her say that, something within me revolted. I quickly turned to
her, and said, “That is a lie. I have a white spirit within me, the Spirit of Jesus
Christ. You have a black, dark devil within you. I command you to come out of
her!”

When I said this, I laid my hands on her and her eyes glared strangely. Her face
contorted and suddenly she was released. The whole area could feel the release
of the woman as they saw her countenance change. Rather than continuing to
the platform, I asked the woman through my interpreter, “How long have you
been bound by the devil?”

She said, “Fifteen years ago I went to a witch doctor. That spirit has been in me
ever since, but I am free now.”

This seemed to be a strange time to have a confrontation with the devil. I had
never been in this church before, and was only walking in the door when I met
the situation. Yet, I felt if I ignored it I would be defeated in my preaching. I
knew this spirit would come against me during the sermon. The only means of
victory was to face it, and win the battle.

I did not have the time to consider whether I was capable of doing it, or if it
was the right thing to do. I did not have time to consult with anybody else
about what was wrong with the woman. She did not seem to be out of order in
any way. It was simply an inevitable battle that had to be fought. I felt that
there would be no victory for the cause of Christ unless I was willing to do
battle. Before I reached the platform, we had to fight. The wonderful thing was
the tremendous release her deliverance brought to the whole meeting. When
the people saw that this visitor was not afraid of evil, a great feeling of victory
entered every part of the service. Many people were set free from demon
power that night.

3. THIS IS NOT A HUMAN BATTLE

We spent three months ministering throughout the island of Java. During that
time we had a number of encounters with the devil, and we learned many
interesting things. The greatest lesson we learned was that we, personally, were

62
Breaking Demon Power on the Mission Field

not involved in the conflict. Something within us, Jesus Christ, fought the
battle. It was not the person we met who caused the battle; it was something
within him or her–the devil.

4. BE FEARLESS

I discovered that I had no reason to fear, because I did not lose the battles.
Even though the demon-possessed people would scream and tear at
themselves, they did not try to hurt or touch me. I was perfectly safe when
exorcising demons. In most cases, the demons wanted to run away and not
confront me.

I sought to confirm this activity by the Word of God. The Great Commission
of our Lord Jesus Christ to His disciples became my Gibraltar.

Mark 16:15-17, And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach
the gospel to every creature.

v. 16, He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth
not shall be damned.

v. 17, And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they
cast out devils…

5. THE BARKING SPIRIT

I discovered from my experiences in the Orient, that whenever I faced a deep

problem and the kingdom of God was challenged, the Lord always came
through. He performed many mighty miracles to deliver people from Satan’s
power.

When I arrived in Europe, I was speaking at a meeting in Poland. I had never

been there before, and did not know the Polish language. Sitting on the
crowded front row of the auditorium, was a woman who would periodically
say, “Hallelujah” in a shrill eerie voice. It cut my spirit to the quick whenever
she said hallelujah, but I noticed that the local people did not seem to mind.

Throughout the song and prayer portions of the service the woman constantly
interrupted everybody. I knew I would never reach these people unless she was

63
Breaking Demon Power on the Mission Field

stopped. Though she seemed to be religious, the spirit within her was hindering
the meeting.

When I stood to speak, rather than greeting the people, I looked at her and said,
“Would you please shut up.”

My interpreter was so taken aback, that he did not say anything. Suddenly, that
woman, who did not understand English, began to bark like a dog. The people
were amazed, because they did not realize that this was an evil thing within
her. A few moments later, I looked at her again and said, “Now, I command
you to come out of her!”

Without ever leaving the platform, or going near the woman, she was set free
by the power of God. The meeting was now free and blessed.

6. CLARITA VILLANUEVA

A notable deliverance which has been reported throughout the world occurred
at Bilibid Prison in Manila, Philippines. This was the place the Lord set Clarita
Villanueva free from demon power. Something invisible to the natural eye
would bite her. It continued for three weeks, then the Lord spoke to me. He
said He would heal her if I would go and pray for her. I went, and the Lord set
her free.

Through this miracle a great revival came to the Philippine nation and the city
of Manila. The mayor of the city, who had seen her in her afflicted state,
permitted us to hold a crusade in Roxas Park in front of the city hall. During
six weeks of great meetings, thousands of people made the decision to follow
and serve the Lord Jesus Christ. People from throughout the Philippines
attended the crusade, and return to their own towns and villages glorifying God
for what had happened.

The healing of this one girl in the Philippines caused the religious complexion
of the nation to change. Churches that have had a difficult time gaining
members were full of people. Many denominations were blessed because of the
revival that God started with the healing of this girl.

64
Breaking Demon Power on the Mission Field

7. THE INVISIBLE BOY

Another tremendous demonstration of God’s power in the Philippines occurred

with the boy who would disappear. He would simply evaporate into thin air.
He would disappear from his classroom, causing great consternation. His
teacher had a nervous breakdown and never taught again.

The members of his family were nearing a breakdown. They were Roman
Catholics and did not know what to do. They tried to protect themselves from
the police, by not allowing any reports about the boy in the newspaper.
Otherwise, they would have been hounded to death by reporters and the public.

This went on for a year before a Methodist minister found them, and brought
them to my meetings where God healed that boy instantly. We cast that spirit
out of him in the name of Jesus. He was free, and is still free.

THE MASS MEDIA OVERSEAS

INTRODUCTION

Overseas missions has changed through the years. Primitive conditions and
environments in many areas have vanished. Today a person trained in electronics
can find a position in an overseas mission.

1. LITERATURE

The ability to read has changed lives. During my last year in Hong Kong, New
Life Temple printed and distributed over one million pieces of literature.

2. RADIO AND TELEVISION

The electronic evangelist has come of age. Powerful short-wave, AM and FM

radio stations cover the planet. Several of them broadcast in different
languages.

Television is also a powerful tool for the gospel. It is being used effectively in
many countries like the Philippines, Brazil and Italy.

66
The Media Overseas

3. HOW A NATIONAL PASTOR CAN USE THE MEDIA

There are three major methods for using radio or television:

A. Spot announcements can be purchased. These announcements are

comparatively inexpensive.

B. Time for special programs can be purchased on stations. These programs

could be produced for special occasions such as anniversaries, Christmas
and Easter.

C. Weekly programs give a church tremendous growth and prestige.

4. THE SATELLITE MINISTRY

The newest member of the mass media is satellite. Both up-linking and down-
linking aspects are popular. There is tremendous potential in the sky as relating
to world evangelism.

Richard Roberts televised directly from Africa to the Oral Roberts program
originating out of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Kenneth Copeland produced a historic
simultaneous satellite broadcast with Paul Yonggi Cho in Korea.

The Bible says Jesus will return when every eye can see Him. If the Lord was
as large as a mountain, not everyone could see Him through their natural eyes,
but it will be possible with satellite television. This development is an exciting
sign that gives accredited proof to the return of our Lord.

5. THE MASS MEDIA AND THE LOCAL CHURCH

There are many new aspects to missionary work. The apostles knew nothing
about electronics. With electronic media, we can reach more people in a single
day than Paul did in his entire lifetime.

The use of the media is different from founding a church. It can only take the
message of the gospel to the people who listen. Radio and television ministries
can bring conviction to the hearts of the people who hear them. These
ministries can answer the letters they receive from their listeners and/or
viewers, but people still need the local church in order to become stable and
rooted in the gospel.

67
The Media Overseas

So many different ways of taking the gospel to the world exist, that a person
has to decide if he is an apostle or a helper. If he is a helper, then he goes into
the field to help. If he is an apostle, he goes out to found and establish
churches.

There are many contributing factors in modern missionary work. Literature is a

tremendous contribution to the local church. However, if there is no local
church, all this labor is in vain. People need somebody to feed and keep them.
They need teaching, or the devil will take them back. The foundation of a
strong local body is the first priority of missions. This local body should be led
by a national pastor if it is at all possible.

DON’TS FOR OVERSEAS TRAVELERS

INTRODUCTION

To be forewarned is to be forearmed. Some missionaries on the field have been

disliked from the day they arrived to the day they left. There are specific reasons
for this dislike. Here are a few “don’ts” for the newcomer.

READING

I Corinthians 9:22, To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I
am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

1. NEVER CALL THE CITIZENS OF THE LAND NATIVES

A country’s citizenry should be referred to as nationals. I have heard people

ask missionaries, “Do you think I am a primitive pagan?”

A. I heard a missionary rebuked in my presence by a Brazilian pastor when he

was called a native. He yelled at the missionary, “So you think I am a
pagan! You think I am primitive, and do not wear clothes!”

B. Study the meanings of words. Always use the best and highest word
possible.

69
Don’ts for Overseas Travelers

C. A national may have no religion. He may worship idols. He might even be

primitive, but he is not beyond hope. Nationals are more than just natives.

D. An Indian boy protected me from serpents as we slept on the ground in the

jungle.

E. A banker in Java saved me from certain death as I nearly tumbled into an

active volcano.

2. DO NOT CRITICIZE LOCAL CUSTOMS

People in different countries have different customs. You are as different to

them as they are to you.

A. As a missionary overseas, I heard children in inland China laugh at me. I

asked them through my interpreter, “Why are you laughing at me?”

They responded, “We have never seen such a big nose and long feet. They
look funny to us.”

I could have responded with, “I have never seen such narrow eyes and flat
noses,” but nobody would have been won to Jesus Christ.

B. Missionaries are in other countries to win the lost, establish the church and
bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. It is better not to criticize.

C. Learn to tolerate such local customs as using chopsticks to eat.

D. Do not insult other people.

1) Be humble, and stick to your mission.

2) Do not hurt people’s feelings.

3) Do not mock other people.

4) Never laugh at other people.

70
Don’ts for Overseas Travelers

F. Do not be too conspicuous.

A man from Texas was visiting New York City. He wore a ten-gallon hat
and cowboy boots. The teller at the bank asked, “Can I help you, Tex.”

He leaned over and said, “You are the third person to call me Tex today.
How did you know?”

3. DO NOT INSULT YOUR HOST’S FOOD

A. Eating is a way of life for people all over the world. They like what they
eat because they are accustomed to it.

B. The best solution at meals is to say grace and eat. Do not ask any
questions. You can learn to enjoy food you never ate as a child.

C. If you are in a part of the world where the food might cause you to be ill,
eat fruit, boiled eggs and drink coconut juice. These foods were wrapped
by nature. They can help you to stay healthy.

4. DO NOT BE ANTAGONISTIC TO LOCAL RELIGIONS

A. Animists may worship a stone, tree, river or their ancestors. Do not attack
their religion. Take a Bible and draw pictures of man at his beginning.
Explain how some people have lost their knowledge of God, and how you
are bringing it back to them.
B. Some religious customs will seem very strange to you, but realize that you
are a guest in the country. You must respect them while you point them to
the truth.

5. STAY OUT OF LOCAL POLITICS

A. As a missionary, you are a stranger and foreigner in the land. Do not

become a part of their government. Do not criticize that government. Their
government may be a dictatorship or a democracy. You are not there to
become involved with politics. You are there to lift up the Lord Jesus
Christ.

71
Don’ts for Overseas Travelers

B. Whenever you are asked about politics, reply that you are on a spiritual
mission, not a political one.

C. Most of the time, you will have no relationship with the government of
your native land. It is important that the nationals understand that you are
not a spy. They need to know that you do not have any political ambitions.

6. DO NOT LET THE PEOPLE FEEL YOU ARE THEIR SOURCE

A. It is imperative that you teach the nationals that God is their source.

1) Salvation comes from the Lord.

2) Healing comes from God.

3) Financial prosperity comes from the Lord.

4) The power of the overcoming life comes from God.

5) Wisdom and knowledge come from the Lord.

B. Never allow the nationals to feel that their blessings come from human
sources.

1) Not from you.

2) Not from your denomination.

3) Not from the United States.

C. Teach people to look to God. Then you will have planted a tree that will
bear its own fruit.

7. DO NOT CONFUSE WESTERNIZATION WITH SALVATION

A. Many missionaries and mission agencies have lost the original vision of
converting the nations to Christ. They have clothed nationals, taught them
to read and write, and given them better agricultural methods. These
missionaries frequently feel that they have done their job.

72
Don’ts for Overseas Travelers

B. Helping the people physically and financially does not fulfill the Great
Commission. It is a good thing to teach people to read and write, but Jesus
commanded us to teach them to observe everything He commanded.

Matthew 28:19-20, Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them

in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Matthew 28:20, Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have

commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the
world. Amen.

C. I met an Indian businessman in Hong Kong. He had been educated at a

mission school. He boasted that Christians had spent time and money
educating him, yet never “caught him.”

The missionaries had certainly thought they had done their jobs. They had
taken a young boy and made a successful man of him, yet he was still
unconverted.

D. I visited many mission compounds in China where the people lived in a

fashion similar to the people of the missionary’s homeland. It was a
strange thing to see. The Chinese were acting like the Dutch in one place,
the Irish in another, and Americans in still another.

8. NATIONALS ARE UNEDUCATED, NOT STUPID

A. Some missionaries talk to nationals as if they are children. Actually, the

nationals have as much, or more intelligence, than the missionaries. They
are clever people. Most missionaries discover this fact the hard way–they
are cheated in business deals.

B. Chinese house servants told me about the nicknames they had for different
missionaries. Since the servants always spoke Chinese, the missionaries
rarely knew what they were called.

An interesting fact is the Chinese give nicknames based on personality

traits. They are not stupid. One missionary was called “Mr. Benediction”
because that was all the nationals ever heard from him.

73
Don’ts for Overseas Travelers

9. DO NOT THINK TOO HIGHLY OF YOURSELF

Romans 12:3, For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is
among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to
think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

A. There was a minister who preached to a great crowd in a missionary

campaign. Then he announced, “The world is at my feet!” A few months
later, he was confined to a wheelchair, suffering from the same disease he
had been so mightily used to heal.
B. Many missionaries believe they are better than the nationals. This concept
produces the “ugly American” and “white imperialist” complex on the
field.

10. DO NOT TREAT NATIONALS DIFFERENTLY

Do not treat the people you are sent to minister to differently from the way you
treat people at home.

A. Pray for nationals the same way you pray for people in your home church.

B. Preach faith like you do at home.

C. Teach the nationals to tithe and give offerings.

D. Command them to live by the Bible, just like any other Christian.

11. YOU WILL NOT CHANGE JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE OVERSEAS

You are the same person wherever you are, at home or abroad. People who are
failures at home will be failures on the mission field. If you cannot win the
person across the street, you cannot win people overseas.

12. BE WILLING TO LEAVE WHATEVER YOU TAKE

Do not take anything to the mission field that you are not willing to leave there.
Be willing to lose your finances, children and even your spouse. God
sometimes requires total consecration, and your dearest treasures may be left
on foreign soil.

74
Don’ts for Overseas Travelers

Do not place requirements on funds donated to God’s work, such as purchasing

property. Dedicate those funds to the local body.

13. DO NOT NEGLECT THE NEEDS OF YOUR FAMILY

A. There are dangers in every country. Different countries have different ones.
When we were in the Philippines, one of our sons played on a pile of
lumber. Later we caught two pythons in that same spot.

B. Realize that your family comes before your missionary work. My son saw
an American soldier with a harlot in a restaurant, and asked, “How did he
get her?” That is when I knew it was time to take him home to the United
States.

C. Guide your children. It is important for a missionary to stay close to his

children. He must watch their relationships. He must lead them into the
proper relationship with the national life.

D. Adjustment is important. Children can adjust quickly to climate, people

and food.

14. DO NOT BE A FINANCIAL FOOL

A. No one is prepared for overseas ministry if he is in debt. God is not

honored when you abandon your debts and go overseas.

B. Finances and the mission field.

1) Beware of acquiring debt, and/or buying on credit.

2) Teach tithing to new converts.

3) Receive offerings in public meetings.

4) Teach the people about Biblical prosperity.

C. Know how to trust God. Some people claim to go to the mission field by
faith, but often end up stranded in a strange country.

75
Don’ts for Overseas Travelers

Other missionaries have financial help. Missions are often crippled because
of the lack of funds.

Somebody paid for Paul to go to Ephesus. Then they contributed to the

continuation of his ministry. The group you minister to should help to
reach others with the message of salvation. The Great Commission is as
much a command to them, as it is to you. The Great Commission is the
obligation of all Christians.

D. Do not go into business on the mission field. It is a temptation you must

overcome. Do not even try a part-time business. Trust God.

Everyone in the family is needed to do a good job in missions. It is not

good for your spouse to work outside the mission either. It takes the entire
family to do a good job.

E. Learn about native poverty. A missionary will forever hear nationals

begging, “A dollar! A dollar! My soul for a dollar!”

Once on my daily television show, a national minister from Haiti said,

“First of all, I want to tell your American audience that I do not want
anything from them. I did not come to America to raise money. God told
me I should come and warn Americans of impending danger and judgment
if they do not perform its divine mission to the nations of the world.”

I quickly realized that he was my kind of minister. His faith was strong in
God. He was sure of himself, and his mission to the world.

Missionaries from time immemorial have reported bad economic

conditions to their home churches. They have shown heart-rending pictures
of abject poverty. They produce pictures of naked children, suffering from
disease and malnutrition. They want to raise funds in order to return to the
mission field and help those people.

I cannot ever remember a missionary explaining how sin and poverty are
related. They come from the same source, the devil. When the people are
slaves to sin, they are also impoverished. Many missionaries deal with the
results of sin (poverty), but not its cause.

76
Don’ts for Overseas Travelers

Many American missionaries have wasted their funds on lying people in

other countries. Whenever people ask me for money I tell them, “If God
cannot bless you, you are in big trouble. God is bigger than either you or I
am. If you have asked God, and He could not bless you, there must be a
reason. I must not try to be bigger than God.”

If they want to give you something, that is an entirely different spirit. If

they continually ask you for something, then they are beggars or “rice
Christians." If you stop giving to them, they will quit asking. I do not
bother with that kind of person. I always work with good, solid citizens in
every country. I work with generous people. I refuse to work with any
other kind of person.

15. DO NOT MISREPRESENT THE MISSION FIELD

A. I have experienced nearly every kind of missionary work. I have worked in

jungles and plains, primitive villages and modern cities.

B. Modern missionaries have work at a disadvantage.

1) The early pioneers who went to jungles and remote areas left other
missionaries with the feeling that if they worked in large cities they
were not doing missionary work.

2) Paul did missionary work in large cities. The work of a missionary is to

preach the good news of Christ to people who have never heard about
Him.

C. Missionaries inadvertently mark each other.

1) The missionary with the largest snake story is often declared a hero.
The person who survived an attack by the strongest lion is praised.
Sympathy is often given to the missionary who can describe the most
primitive living conditions.

2) The missionary who starts the most churches, wins the most souls or
trains the most workers is often ignored.
