What I Learn from Organizational Behavior and What is the
Practical Implications of these Learning in an Organization.

Learning from Organizational Behavior

Studying Organizational Behavior is crucial because it identifies why

people make decisions, motivated and productive by interpreting
organizational interactions. Organizational Behavior studies are uniquely
useful for succeeding as a leader of a large business (or other organization).
OB teaches you what makes people make decisions, why employees are
not motivated to do what you want them to do and why people are
productive or not productive. Making good decisions and creating an
environment where people can be creative and motivated is very important
for a successful business. So studying and understanding Organizational
Behavior is one of the essential ingredients of business success.
Organizational Behavior studies power and organizational politics. If you
don’t understand these topics, you will struggle as an employee, especially
in large organizations. Stanford professor Jeff Pfeffer has summarized the
status of the Organizational Behavior approach to real-world management
as a “one-eighth” situation and “the knowing-doing gap.”OB applies the
knowledge gained from individuals, groups, and structure on behavior to
make organizations work more effectively. It is concerned with the study
of what people do in an organization and how that behavior affects the
organization’s performance. There is increasing agreement as to the
components of OB. But there is still considerable debate about the relative
importance of each; motivation, leader behavior, power, interpersonal
communication, group structure and processes, learning, attitude
development, perception, change processes, conflict, work design, and
work stress.
Importance of Organizational Behavior and the
Practical Implications of these Learning in an
Organization.
It is also important because it focuses on the following areas. It is also
important because it focuses on the following areas. OB draws heavily
from behavioral and social sciences, most importantly from psychology.
Organizational learning is important for all companies, as the creation,
retention and transfer of knowledge within the organization will strengthen
the organization as a whole. When looking at the definition of
organizational learning, there are three main actions to consider:

• Conceive

• Act

• Reflect

An idea or product is conceived, the company creates the idea or product,

then the company must reflect. It is through this reflection of both process
and outcome that learning will occur. In addition to those actions, there are
three key processes that occur in organizational learning:

• Knowledge creation

• Knowledge retention

• Knowledge transfer

It is important that the organization ensures that the knowledge gained

from this process is retained within the organization and is transferable.
Knowledge retained by individuals cannot be properly retained, as
individuals can leave, taking their knowledge with them. Embedded
knowledge can be kept within the organization and shared with all
individuals. To define organizational learning is to understand the
importance of creating a learning culture within an organization. This type
of learning benefits both individuals, teams, and the organization as a
whole. There are also positive intra-organizational benefits to this
approach. The theory of organizational learning focuses on the creation of
knowledge and the use of that knowledge within an organization. Key
aspects of organizational learning theory are that learning happens when
people interact while finding and solving problems. Organizational
learning theory stresses the importance of developing a learning culture
within an organization. According to this theory, organizations should:

• Develop a culture that prizes knowledge sharing

• Take time to learn the lessons that failure can teach

• Encourage employees of all levels to continue their education

on a regular basis

• Allow individuals and teams to challenge the status quo of the

organization

The importance of organizational learning is shown by the various benefits

that occur in organizations that develop a learning culture:

1. Increased employee job satisfaction

2. Lower turnover rates

3. Increased productivity, profits and efficiency

4. Developing leaders at all levels

5. Enhanced adaptability throughout the organization

When organizations dedicate time and resources to developing a learning

culture and implementing organizational learning, they are more
competitive. This increased ability to react quickly to fast-changing market
conditions is just one of the reasons why organizational learning is
important. An organization that embraces the lessons that can be learned
from failure and studies its own processes will be an organization that
contains more knowledge about best practices, and will be much more able
to adapt. By creating an environment where all employees are teachers and
students, there is an equal exchange of information that allows each person
to contribute in a substantial manner.

The study of organizational behavior is one of the most significant

elements in the management sciences, as it makes management learn from
what has succeeded elsewhere. Generally, financial strength is a measure
of the organizations past success. What determines whether the
organization will continue to deliver sought-after products, will continue
to develop cutting edge technology, will continue to make the right options
about which direction the market is going to go, will continue to make
sound investments, is the people and the organizational culture and
structure. According to Casey Reader (2010), different organizational
structures will show different types of organizations that each has strengths
and weaknesses. There are four main elements which are Motivation,
Culture, Change, and System. According to Motivation, it draws that
individual behave differently when they are in groups. Major of the study
of organizational behavior has aimed on how best to motivate group of
individuals. Professionals have figure that it often doesn’t matter exactly
what you do, but merely that employees are aware of your efforts to
motivate. Based on Culture, when individual communicate with one
another over an extended period of time they intentionally to deliver a
selective culture that determines how tasks get completed and common
attitudes. Organizational theorists tend to practice this culture and how it
influences behavior. Strong cultures align with the overall goals of an
organization, such as having an emphasis on innovation. On the other hand,
weak cultures degrade from business goals, and cause conflicts, such as
overemphasizing bureaucratic rule-following. Today, Motivation and
Culture are important to practice with Organizational Behavior because
major organizations are encouraging team approach to solve difficulties.
Today’s post-industrial hi-tech organization requires knowledge intensive
work environment and demands creativity from its own employees.
Employers gave awareness to Organizational Behavior or soft skill
training. The industrial revolution created the wants for hard skills.
Employees who work in production line and were not required thinking or
communicating to each other. But now, instead of standing behind the
production line, employees need to sit in front of a computer, and control
machine equipment who works in the production line. Now, employees are
not only required to learn new technical skills but also how to
communicate, negotiate, decentralize, and motivate within each other.
Human beings encourage seeking satisfaction in every phase of their life.
From satisfying their basic primal needs and wants, which is hunger, thirst,
rest and social interaction, the complex community today has its
benchmark of goals and fulfillment that should be accomplished by
individuals. This selective set of fulfillment and goals encloses securing a
good job, preferably with a good pay and hopefully, with a high level of
job satisfaction. There is no fixed and formal guideline on how to overcome
challenges at work into a motivation for individuals to reach job
satisfaction, so that with the good practicing of Organizational Behavior,
individuals are able to well handle the task pressure, and overcome the
variety of challenges. Due to the research and learning of Organizational
Behavior, individuals will be able to present and well-practiced a positive
working attitude towards his own task and job responsibilities. This
selected learning of Organizational Behavior helps individual to create
self-awareness all the times. Individuals will be able to draw and execute
his own action plan, and well known the current position of him, and be
aware of where is the next position he is going to reach.

Organization Behaviour is a study and application of knowledge about how

individuals and groups in an organization re act or in other words behave
at any given point of time. The Study on Organisational Behaviour widens
its area to Change, Leadership and Human Behaviour. And its key function
is to enhance relationships by fulfilling Organisational, Social and Human
objectives. Today organizations are thriving to enhance their core
competencies towards a better success and its strategies are directed
towards building a “positive psychological human capital” which in turn
would be the key in fulfilling its shared vision and its objectives. Hence it
is essential for mangers to have an in-depth knowledge in understanding
what Organisational Behaviour (OB) is all about. As managers it is vital to
posses’ technical skills, Human skills and Conceptual skills in order to
study human behaviour such people skills are of utmost important to
predict what people do in an organization and how much the behavioural
patterns create an impact on organizational performance. Human Capital is
considered to be an important asset for any organization, ensuring that staff
moral, work ethics, employee satisfaction is in favourable to the
orgnasiation in order to thrive results. OB encompasses and stress on a
more systematic approach rather being intuitive in reading others. It helps
managers in providing a base, in which more accurate predictions of
behaviour can be made understood. The underlying fact is that it suggests
that behaviour is not just random rather there are fundamental consistencies
which help to understand the behaviour of all individuals. Learning
Organizational Behaviour is an effective tool for managers as it focuses on.
Comprehending the significance of Learning and Management Styles for
personal and organizational growth and development and for business
leadership and management. It recognizes the value of developing specific
competencies in an Organizational Environment. Learning OB helps focus
on Stress Management and it can be used on helping employees.

Behavioural issues and the use of Organisational

Behaviour
Talented HR personals play a key role in identifying and resolving people
related issues such issues must be minimized or solved from the beginning
and throughout all stages in order to bridge the gap and to be ideally placed
under the cultural fit. If people-related issues and cultural issues are
effectively addressed in the early stages, managers can begin to assess the
feasibility of success sooner rather than later. Today many manufacturing
and service related organizations are increasingly recognizing the fact that
ignoring potential culture clashes can lead to financial failure. Cultural
changes within the working environment can cause culture shocks among
employees harming both the individual and the group.

It is important to determine the style of Leadership; it must be honest,

straightforward and decisive. Favourism can result in conflicts among the
employees and employers. This can be detrimental for the organization; it
can lose its skilled workforce and provides a break through to their rivals
in grasping the skilled labour force. Motivational issues are very common
in many companies research on motivation has been taking place even
now, identifying the best possible way to motivate staff is always
considered to be a challenge, finding the right mix of motivational tools
along with a happy work force is always a “key strength”. The Mystery of
Job satisfaction and individual job performance still prevail since the 18th
century. Recruiting the right person, for the right job and to the right place
is a phenomena which is quite frequently used by many HR personals
today, however the role of an HR personal doesn’t end here he needs to
focus his attention in training and career development for his employees
rather not being job specific, career developmental programs would
increase satisfaction levels as an individual or a group creating a win-win
atmosphere, this would ensure a higher level of job satisfaction. Driving
towards a personal objective in an organization is not acceptable by any
means as it can encourage other staff members in the team/group too. Such
actions would mislead others in the team and lose focus in achieving the
shared vision. Further it can low its operating efficiency to a greater extent.
Due to the above reasons it is crucial for managers to study the
Organizational Behaviour in detail so that it can used as a tool in
indentifying the people’ issues and rectify to within a short period of time.
Present issues and Solutions from Organisational
Behaviour
As the twenty-first century approaches, companies face a variety of
changes and challenges that will have a profound impact on organizational
dynamics and performance. When considering the banking sector,
competition within the industry is intensifying, companies are introducing
value added services, innovative products.

Organizational Behavior is the application of knowledge about how

peoples, individuals, and groups act and react in an organization, in order
to reach and accomplish the highest quality of performances, and dominant
results. One way for an organization to become more innovative is to
capitalize on its own employee’s to innovate. All organizations and groups
experience the direct relationship between job satisfaction, and
performance. In order to maximize the performance of those within a
system, it is significant important to develop an optimal interpersonal
chemistry. There is more evidence that the teaching and implementation of
soft skills should get higher emphasis in education and organization
training process, but it should only complement hard skills, not substitute
for it.
