THESIS 2021

Stage 2. Site Analysis, Related Studies & Program Formulation

SITE ANALYSIS

Site analysis is a predesign research activity which focuses on existing and potential
conditions on and around the building site. It is an inventory of the site factors and forces,
and how they coexist and interact. The purpose of the analysis is to provide thorough
information about the site assets and liabilities prior to starting the design process. Only in
this way can concepts be developed that incorporate meaningful responses to the external
conditions of the site.

The best way of using the site analysis is to design a good relationship between the building
and the site itself. The building design should be in harmony with those beneficial site
conditions and strive to save, reinforce, amplify, and improve on what exists. Basically, take
advantage of the good things nature has to offer and protect against the bad aspects of the
site.

The following parameters should be taken into consideration for the site analysis:

1. Location

2. Site Area & Orientation

3. Applicable Bye-laws & Zoning regulations

4. Access

5. Site & Surroundings

a. Vegetation & natural features

b. Soil type & condition

c. Topography (+contour map where applicable)

d. Land use & buildings

e. Visual Linkages (to and fro from site)

f. Circulation: Pedestrian & Vehicular

6. Climatic conditions
a. Temperature

b. Sun path

c. Wind direction

d. Precipitation

7. Infrastructure facilities

a. Water supply

b. Drainage

c. Electric Supply

8. Locally available resources

9. Culture, Historic factors, sensory stimuli or any other factor deemed appropriate for the
site

The following points to be noted for the Site Analysis submission:

 Maximum 2 A1 size sheets to be submitted.

 Site model on appropriate scale (minimum 1)

RELATED STUDIES

The sub-heads should be followed as below for each case/literature study:

a) About the project

b) Site & Surroundings

c) Site planning & circulation

d) Internal planning & circulation

e) Services

f) Inferences & Conclusion

The following points to be noted for the Related Studies submission:

 A minimum of 2 case studies & 2 literature studies to be done.

 A separate Inferences & Conclusion sheet to be added with comparison of all case and
library studies.
 Maximum 5 A1 size sheets to be submitted.

PROGRAM FORMULATION
