GAME OVERVIEW

Whilst Maidenhead adopted a predominantly direct approach to this game, with all goal kicks hit long to either 17 or 27 (who would attempt to flick on to 17), they also
appeared comfortable in possession throughout the game, with 8 at the heart of much of their build-up play (more information on team shape and style in Tactics section).

Their goal came on the counter-attack, with 8 hitting a diagonal ball into the box from inside his own half (left to right) into acres of space, for 17 to run onto, collect on the
right side of the penalty area, run into penalty area under little pressure from the back-peddling defender, cut inside and finish with his left foot, possibly with help from a
deflection. The result definitely didn’t flatter Maidenhead – they were by far the better team, and could (and probably should) have scored more.

PLAYER ANALYSIS
Carl Height: 183cm / Normal Build // League appearances this season: 32. Didn’t have a lot to do in the way of shot-stopping, but commanded his area well – he is a good physical
1 presence and is comfortable coming off his line to collect crosses in traffic. He has a strong kick from both ground and hand (can comfortably reach 15-20 yards over half-way).
Pentney (GK)

Height: 184cm / Normal Build // League appearances this season: 28 (1 goal) Tall and leggy, decent in the air but not the quickest. He is quite reserved in terms of positioning, and
Remy
2 tends to stay back alongside centre backs when his team attacks. Long throw threat – can comfortably reach the opposition penalty area from 10 yards inside their half.Description

SCOUTING REPORT

SHAPE
Defensive Shape

Out of possession they were compact and organised, dropping usually into either a
4-1-4-1 (with 5 as the anchorman in midfield) or sometimes even a 5-4-1 to create a
defensive overload for opposition goal kicks (see image above).

In this shape, 5 dropped into a RCB / 2nd RB position, to nullify the aerial threat of
Effiong, who at 190cm was significantly taller than all of Maidenhead’s back 4, but
not 5 (who is 191cm).

With Maidenhead’s Defensive Midfielder marking Dover’s most advanced player,

Maidenhead’s two CBs and RB (2) were always goal-side by a considerable
distance, which in turn made it difficult for Dover to get in behind them, even if they
did when the first header.

This image also shows the advanced position that the LB (3) tended to occupy in
relation to 2.

How deep do the flanks play? Attacking or defending?

How tall is the GK and how is he with crosses?

Does the GK throw the ball out and if so who is willing to accept it?

Do they build up from the back, through midfield or direct to the final 3rd

How well and early do they pressure the ball

Do they have any quick players

Do they have any aggressive players

Is there anyone frightened of a challenge

Were there any penalties and if so who took them and where did he place it

Is there anybody who did not play today that should have?
