Hopefully this helps Airhead. If not let me know and I will help you out some more….

Book relation to movie:

1. Exploitation of civilians/working class

2. Use of violence to intimidate ex: rape, burnings, torture, killings… In the movie rebels use

brutality to be in power…

3. Exploitation of laborers to better benefit those in power: use of natural resources and

exports…

4. Corruption in politics

Book talks about dehumanization of civilians ----Movie depicts people being tortured,

rape, killed, all types of brutal acts. Ex: from book (page 41) “…these heads of men, these

collections of ears, these burned houses, the Gothic invasions, this steaming blood, these cities

that evaporate at the edge of a sword, are to not be so easily disposed of. They prove that

colonization, I repeat, dehumanizes even the most civilized man…” “…that the colonizer, who

in order to ease his conscience gets into the habit of seeing the other man as an animal,

accustoms himself to treating him like an animal, and tends to objectively to transform himself

into an animal.” (Meaning that those who use violence and cause blood to shed ultimately

become savage animals themselves, they become emotionless and lose their own humanity.) (In

the movie you see brutal acts of violence, genocide and brutal acts towards people…) Make

sense?

Fear as a weapon: When fear is instilled in a human being, it becomes easy to take

advantage of that fear. Ex: in the movie you see the rebels using weapons against people who

don’t have weapons. When you have a gun pointed in your face, you will do almost anything to
spare your life. People with power understand this. (page 43) “I am talking about the millions of

men in whom fear has been cunningly instilled, who have been taught to have an inferiority

complex…” (Meaning when fear in instilled people they start to think of themselves as less or

not worthy...When someone is afraid of you, then you can make them do anything..) Make

sense?? In the movie you see men with guns and knives being able to exploit the people who do

not have weapons or anyway to fight back…Also rape is a very big intimidation tactic…Men a lot

of times resort to rape especially with women. This easily dehumanizes an individual and makes

them feel powerless.

One quote I found important was (page 46) “…It is the colonized man who wants to

move forward, and the colonizer who holds things back.”

People pay for the price of those in power. (page 43) “Societies drained of their essence,

cultures trampled underfoot, institutions undermined, lands confiscated, religions smashed,

magnificent artistic creations destroyed, extraordinary possibilities wiped out.”
