DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN EARTH SCIENCE 11

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:

1. differentiate the layers of the earth;
2. appreciate the importance of being responsible in protecting our planet.

Greeting
Good morning once again class. Good morning Sir!
So how are you doing today? (different responses)
Well, that’s good!

Checking of Attendance
Is there any absent today? None Sir.
Very good!

B. PRIMING

1. Recall/Motivation

I have here an envelope filled with pictures. The students will work on the activity
All of you must pick 1 picture. After which, you (game).
are going to pass it to the person next to you.
Now that all of you have a picture at hand,
1
kindly look for your group mates who has the
same picture as you do. For the land group,
please stay here. For the water group, please
sit here and for the air group, please occupy
the seats there.

Today we are going to play a game entitled

“Able to Assemble” to recall the layers of the
earth. I’ll be giving you an envelope
containing the broken pieces of earth’s layers,
pentel pen, cartolina and paper tape. All you
need to do is to assemble the correct
structure of the earth by putting together the
broken pieces of earth’s layers in a cartolina
and label it correctly. Then, the cartolina
should be posted on the board for checking.
The first group to finish and has the correct
answer is the winner.

Am I understood? Any clarification? If none,

let’s start the game!

(The teacher will facilitate the game. When

everybody is done, the teacher will check the
answers and declare the winner.)

Similarly, the earth is made up of the crust,
the mantle and the core.

C. LESSON PROPER

1. Presentation

Now, we will explore more of the interior of

the Earth (present the topic) and we will get
know the differences of the 3 layers of the
earth (present the objectives). Are you ready
to explore and travel?
So put on your heat-resistant suit, fasten your
seatbelt, open your mind, eyes and ears to
learn and to enjoy the trip. Yes Sir!

layers of the earth?

2. Which is the outermost layer? The The crust is the outermost layer. The
innermost layer? innermost layer is the inner core.

3. Which layer is the thickest? The The thickest layer is mantle. The thinnest
thinnest? layer is crust.

4. Which is the hottest layer? Why? The hottest layer is inner core. Due to its
very high temperature resulted from the
increase with depth and compression.

5. Despite of the rigid solid state of crust, The crust is less dense than the mantle.
why do you think it doesn’t sink in the
mantle?

6. How do the layers of the earth differ The layers of the earth differ in relative

4. Abstraction

1. What are the differences of the layers The students will cite all the differences of
of the earth? the 3 layers of the earth.

2. How is continental crust different from Continental crust is the crust under which
oceanic crust? the continents are built and is 10-70 km
thick, while oceanic crust is the crust under
the oceans, and is only 7-10 km thick.

3. What element is the most abundant in Oxygen is the most abundant element in
the earth’s crust? the earth’s crust.

4. How do you describe lithosphere? Lithosphere is a relatively cool, outermost

rigid shell that ranges from the crust to the
uppermost part of the mantle.

5. Application

Group Work
After learning the differences of the 3 layers of
the earth, each group should now come up
with a creative performance about the earth
interior. The performance can be in the form
of a very short -poem recitation, song number,
speech choir, dance or anything that you can
think as long as it summarizes all the key
concepts of the lesson. You have only 1
minute to prepare. After which, the
presentation by group will follow. The group
will be rated using this rubric:

makes a genuine and creative
effort to present.

GENERALIZATION

The earth is composed of different layers that

are distinguishable from each other. These
layers contribute in maintaining the balance of
the entire planet and in sustaining life. With
this, is it important to protect our planet

layers? Do we need to be responsible enough
to protect our planet?

IV. EVALUATION

Individual Work
Directions: Answer the following items.
A. Write “NO DEAL” if the statement states a correct differentiation of the layers of the
earth and “DEAL” if otherwise.
1. The crust is thicker than the mantle.
2. The outer core is made up of liquid iron and nickel while the inner core is
made up of solid iron and nickel.
3. The mantle is hotter than the core.
4. The oceanic crust is made up of basalt while the continental crust is made up
of granite.
B. Choose the letter of the correct answer.
5. What will happen to the earth if the people living on it are responsible of their
actions?
a. The earth will be protected and maintains its balance.
b. The earth will cater and hold more lives.
c. The earth will stay as it is.
d. None of the above.

V. ASSIGNMENT

Please take note of your assignment.

 Explain how scientists are able to predict what is inside of the earth looks like.
 Explain the concept of plate tectonics.
