ENERGY TRANSFORMATION
Energy is defined as the ability to do work. Energy transformation, also known as energy
conversion, is the process of changing energy from one form to another. Energy comes in various
forms. Here are the common types of energy and examples of them.

1. Mechanical energy - Mechanical energy is energy that results from movement or the location
of an object. Mechanical energy is the sum of kinetic energy and potential energy.

Ex: a moving car, a barbell lifted high above a weightlifter's head

2. Potential Energy - Potential energy is the energy of an object's position.

Ex: A book on a table before it falls, A yoyo before it is released.

3. Kinetic Energy- Kinetic energy is the energy of motion of a body. It ranges from 0 to a positive
value.

Ex: a child swinging on a swing, walking, falling, flying, and throwing.

4. Thermal Energy- Thermal energy or heat energy reflects the temperature difference between
two systems.

Ex: A cup of hot coffee has thermal energy. You generate heat and have thermal energy with
respect to your environment.

5. Nuclear energy- is energy resulting from changes in the atomic nuclei or from nuclear
reactions.

Ex: Nuclear fission, nuclear fusion, and nuclear decay are examples of nuclear energy. An atomic
detonation or power from a nuclear plant is specific examples of this type of energy.

6. Chemical Energy- Chemical energy results from chemical reactions between atoms or
molecules. This energy is released when a chemical reaction takes place.

Ex: an electrochemical cell or battery, photosynthesis, cooking food and burning wood

7. Electromagnetic Energy- Electromagnetic energy (or radiant energy) is energy from light or
electromagnetic waves.

Ex: Radio, gamma rays, x-rays, microwaves, and ultraviolet light are some examples of
electromagnetic energy.

8. Sound energy- is the movement of energy through a substance – such as air or water – in the
form of waves. It is produced when a force causes an object or substance to vibrate.

Ex: Voices, whistles, horns and musical instruments.

9. Light energy- is a kind of kinetic energy with the ability to make types of light visible to human
eyes. Light is defined as a form of electromagnetic radiation emitted by hot objects like lasers,
bulbs, and the sun.

10. Electrical Energy- Electrical energy is a form of energy resulting from the flow of electric
charge.
Ex: Plugging appliances
