PRACTICE 1
STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS
CIVIL ENGINEERING

Learning outcome:
Use a computational program to determine the internal forces and the displacements of a
beam and a frame.

In teams, use a software for structural analysis to determine the internal forces and the
displacements of

1) A beam
2) A frame

Select a beam with two spans or more, as well as a two story frame, that are already solved
in a book or in the web. Determine the internal forces, deformed shape (displacements) and
reactions. Draw the free body diagram. Compare the results from the software with those
from the book.

Your practice report should include the following sections:

• Introduction. A description of the structures that were analyzed. Cite your reference.
• Methodology. Present images of the procedure to input data in the software.
• Results. Present the internal forces diagrams, deformed shape (displacements) and
reactions obtained from the software. Draw the free body diagram (interpretation of
the results).
• Conclusions. Compare the results obtained with the software and those presented
in the book. Describe your main learnings.
• References. Write the reference that you used for your homework, including SAP
manual.

1
At the end of the document include a short description of the participation of each student
with dates. Only a couple of lines of description per student. Co-evaluate the team members;
if a student carried out all his activities on time and with good quality, he deserves a 100%
of the score. Use the following table to provide this information:

Co-evaluation
Student Activity Date
0-100%
Student name 1 Activity 1 of S1 Date of activity 1
Activity 2 of S2 Date of activity 2
Student name 2 Activity 1 of S2 Date of activity 2

Lab practice report submission

Upload the practice report on UADY Virtual platform. The file should be in PDF format. Try
to upload only one file with the final version of your homework. The file name must be the
numbers of the team and practice (e.g. Team2_P1.pdf).
