The reign of King Edward VII (1901-1910) seemed like an autumnal idyll, but some

darkly disasters, the death of Captain Scott and his party in the Antarctic (March 1912)
and the sinking of Titanic, prepare the nation for what were to be yet greater checks to
its pride and confidence during the first war world. The golden age of king Edward was
marked by the confident swagger and independence of English architecture and English
music.
