I – SUBJECT: LUBRICANTS FOR POWERTRAINS

This document, and the six tables of recommended lubricants given in the appendices, are the
RENAULT TRUCKS lubricant reference document for all of the ranges.

APPENDIX 1: ENGINE LUBRICANTS - EURO 4 / EURO 5 INCENTIVE

Certain oil names have changed, and the driving and servicing handbooks will be progressively
updated.
For vehicles running on diesel containing vegetable oil-based methyl ester (Biodiesel), the time
between oil changes should be divided by 2 regardless of how the vehicle is used (See
Technical Note Q0011).

II – OIL CHANGE INTERVALS

II – 1. When using the predictive maintenance system (Euro 3, Euro 4 and Euro 5
incentive)
By using predictive maintenance (only with Euro 3 & 4 engines) and RENAULT TRUCKS OILS
RD / RD-2, RLD / RLD-2 or RXD lubricants categories, oil change intervals can be optimized for
each vehicle according to its usage.
Using the Diag NG3 or Instrument Panel Display Menu, the user enters different parameters:
– Engine oil grade used:
• RD / RD-2.
• RLD / RLD-2.
• Others (for DXi engines)
– If necessary, the diesel fuel grade used (depends on sulphur content):
• Sulphur < 0.005 % (notably European Union countries: Standard 0.005%)
• 0.005 % < sulphur < 0.3 %
• Sulphur > 0.3 %
According to the data entered, the system automatically programmes the appropriate oil change
interval.
Maintenance parameters are reset and modified in the Diag NG3 or the Instrument Panel Display
Menu (See Driving & Servicing Handbook).

Ö The oil change intervals are listed in the tables in APPENDICES 1 & 2.

II – 2. When the predictive maintenance system is not used (Euro 2, Euro 3, Euro
4 and Euro 5 incentive)
In this case, the oil change intervals are set in accordance with vehicle usage:
– Standard use
– Heavy duty use

Ö The oil change intervals are listed in the tables in APPENDICES 1, 2 and 3.

III – RENAULT TRUCKS RECOMMENDATIONS

Reminder concerning engine oil quality:
– The RD/RD-2 specification defines an engine lubricant complying with, at minimum, the ACEA
E3-96 issue 4 + VDS-2 grade.
Ö IMPERATIVE oil grade for DXi 5, 7, 11, 12 & 13 engines.
– The RLD/RLD-2 specification defines an engine lubricant complying with, at minimum, the
ACEA E7-04 + VDS-3 grade.
Ö IMPERATIVE oil grade for DXi 5, 7, 11, 12 & 13 engines.
– The RXD specification defines an engine lubricant complying with, at minimum, the ACEA E4 +
E7 + VDS-3 grade.
– The RGD specification defines a specific lubricant for CNG (Natural Gas) engines complying
with the following conditions:
• ACEA E3-96 issue 3 level (except engine testing)
• TBN = 6/8
• Sulphated ash = 1 %

RENAULT TRUCKS recommends the use of Generation ECO oils to obtain fuel savings. This line of
oils is already used for new vehicles.

These recommendations are based on extensive test bench and vehicle trials and comply with
RENAULT TRUCKS engine requirements to ensure the reliability expected by its customers.

These recommendations cannot be the subject of "compromise or negotiation"; they are directly
related to engine technical specifications.

Failure to comply with the manufacturer's recommendations for oil change intervals or use of
unsuitable lubricants will considerably reduce the engine operation safety factor and may
eventually result in serious damage.

Should such damage occur, RENAULT TRUCKS will not cover the costs of the work required to
repair damaged engines, even for vehicles under warranty.

You will find maintenance recommendations expressed in the form of a maximum number of kilometres
between two oil changes in the tables in the APPENDIXES.

Reminder: Oil change intervals must not exceed 2 years for all vehicles except for the
Magnum DXi for which the oil change interval is limited to 1 year.

The recommended oil change intervals are to be reduced in the following specific cases of use:

– Vehicle operating from a fixed location:

• Without using the predictive maintenance system:
It is necessary to recalculate the oil change interval assuming that 1 hour of operation at
stabilized engine speed is equivalent to a distance of 50 km.
For vehicles using domestic fuel, reduce the maintenance interval by half.

– Diesel fuel sulphur content:

• Without using the predictive maintenance system:
The European standard recommends a maximum sulphur content of 0.005 %. If however,
depending on the country of supplier, the sulphur content exceeds 0.3%, you must reduce the
maintenance intervals by half. Below 0.3 % sulphur content, the recommendations apply with
no special reservations;

EURO 3 engines may show oil of a dark or blackish appearance - this has no effect on engine
component reliability and requires no oil change other than that programmed by the predictive
maintenance system or that determined according to usage.

IV – MAINTENANCE

IV – 1. Lubricant
Ensure, jointly with the users, that when using the predictive maintenance system:
– The oil grade entered into the system corresponds to that actually used.
– Customers observe system predictions.

IV – 2. Oil filtration
Only use original manufacturer filters as their filtration factor and area have been specially designed
to ensure maximum lifetime of the lubricated parts (engine, pump, etc...).
The references of the recommended oil filter cartridges are listed in the tables in the APPENDICES.
Filter elements (both full flow and centrifugal filters) must be changed in accordance with the
manufacturer's recommendations at each oil change.

VERY IMPORTANT:
It is MANDATORY that ONLY original manufacturer filters be used. You are reminded that it is
essential for you to fill the filters with oil before installation, lubricate the filter seal and follow the
assembly procedure de montage (See Technical Note N° 9171).
We remind you that warranty cover depends directly on the use of original manufacturer filters.
Cartridge tightening:
– Oil filter cartridge: Follow the instructions indicated on the cartridge.
– Centrifugal filter cartridge: Use the torque indicated on the cover.
IMPERATIVE
All interventions involving the fuel or oil circuits require that all screening likely to be soiled be
removed for the operation (see maintenance and driving handbook).

IV – 3. Fuel filtration
Use only original "Approved Parts" filters whose filtration level and retention capacity have been
designed to guarantee maximum reliability. The type of filter element used and procedure for
replacement must comply with the manufacturer's recommendations and be appropriate for the
technical level of the lubricant used.

VERY IMPORTANT:
It is MANDATORY that ONLY original manufacturer filters be used. Failure to comply with this
recommendation may result in premature wear of the injection system (high pressure pump,
injectors, etc.) and invalidate the warranty for vehicles under warranty.
We remind you that warranty cover depends directly on the use of original manufacturer filters.
IMPERATIVE
All interventions involving the fuel or oil circuits require that all screening likely to be soiled be
removed for the operation (see maintenance and driving handbook).
To check for, and deal with, any possible pollution of the diesel circuit - see Technical Note Q0012.

 IV – 4. Cooling

VERY IMPORTANT:
It is IMPERATIVE that you use ONLY Ultracooling Plus coolant, an original manufacturer
consumable meeting Renault Trucks specification 41.01.001.S Type D the performance levels of
which allow oil change intervals to be extended to 400 000 km / 3 years. With the exception of the
Maxity, where it is IMPERATIVE that you use Vegacooling coolant.
We remind you that warranty cover depends directly on the use of this coolant.

IV – 5. Lubricant and fuel additives

The use of additives in the oil or diesel fuel is prohibited: such additives do not enhance
performance in any way. Additives may alter fluid composition and, consequently, adversely affect
engine reliability.
SPECIFIC CASES:
In the case of use of arctic cold type fuels and lubricants, refer to the Driving and Servicing handbook
for the vehicle concerned.

IV – 6. AdBlue Filtration
Use only original "Approved Parts" filters whose filtration level and retention capacity have been
designed to guarantee maximum reliability. The choice of filter element and replacement of such must
be carried out according to the Driving and Servicing handbook for the vehicle concerned.

VERY IMPORTANT:
It is MANDATORY that ONLY original manufacturer filters be used. Failure to comply with this
recommendation may result in premature wear of the injection system (high pressure pump,
injectors, etc.) and invalidate the warranty for vehicles under warranty.
We remind you that warranty cover depends directly on the use of original manufacturer filters.

IV – 7. Instructions for using AdBlue

VERY IMPORTANT:
It is MANDATORY to use a reducing agent (AdBlue) compliant with standard DIN 70070 so as to
preserve the efficiency of SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction). This recommendation concerns both
the product and also its logistics (storage and distribution equipment).
It is IMPERATIVE that you ONLY use AdBlue. Mixing and replacement by any other product is
FORBIDDEN since the risk is run of no longer being able to control the pollutant emissions from
the vehicle, leading to impairment of the post-treatment system.
It is IMPERATIVE that you comply with the storage instructions appearing on the pack prior to any
use of the product.
